Ok so behind this museum is broomy hill miniature railway, they don’t advertise and open only a few days per month. Google for the next opening. It is well worth a visit the old gentlemen who keep this place going do it purely because they love it! Individual trains from steam to diesel and electric arrive in trailers that connect to the track directly, some are small some are larger. Multiple tracks go around with well over a mile combined including tunnels etc, there is also a lake that people with rc boats drove around over all a lovely experience. It’s £1.50 per train ride and no charge for parking or entry 🤷🏼♂️💪🏻 I salute you men of broomy hill miniature railway!

Wonderful guided tour of a really fascinating museum. Full of engines and pumps from the earliest days. They have working days a couple of times a month, but are open on Tuesdays.

The museum had some interesting information in it and lots of machines for people who are interested in them to see. Staff were friendly and it is clear that a lot of work goes in to the upkeep and running of the museum. The park and outdoor activities make it a good place to visit if you have children. The museum wasn't particularly my thing but I can see how it would be interesting to those who have more of an interest in this area.

An excellent museum, with a large number of water pumps and other equipment to provide our clean water. I particularly enjoyed the working machinery and the exhibition about water treatment, which must be the most important public health measure of all time! The staff were really nice and friendly and there was an additional exhibition of Hereford at war which was well done. The Cafe was a pleasant place for something to eat afterwards.

Could be great - but not very well organised. Staff seemed quite confused and nothing actually ready for the opening even though it’s only one day a week! Impressive machines.

Thank you for your review. It is a concern to the Volunteers at the Waterworks Museum when a visitor leaves us disappointed.
The Museum re-opened in July 2021 after a period of closure of 15 months. Since then, we have been working to a new operational model whilst we implement a major programme of recruitment and training to build our team of volunteers back to the strength it was pre-pandemic. This exercise is ongoing.
We are all volunteers at the Waterworks Museum, which is why the Museum can only open one day a week.

Although I had been to Hereford many times over the years, I had never made it to the Waterworks Museum - until last week. It was fairly easy to find with plenty of parking. If I had had more time, I would have walked across to the river or looked at the model railway set up nearby.
I enjoyed looking around the displays and learning more about the pumping and cleaning of water locally. There was a vast selection of engines and I will return on a "steam" day. The highlight was talking to the volunteer engineers working on site. One described his time there as "very good for my mental health". I also had some cake and a cup of tea at the cafe.
Once outside the main building, I found the displays on Rotherwas very interesting, with their emphasis on women during the war. I did not have chance to look at the outdoor area for children.
On speaking to my dad, he remembered fitting the gas for some of the displays (when he worked for British Gas) so he will be visiting tomorrow!

I have been visiting this wonderful museum for around twenty years, and my latest visit on 4th July, accomanied by daughter and granddaughters, was truly excellent. There really is something for everyone, of all ages and all interests, especially when the museum is "in steam". For me, as a retired engineer, it is great to see and study the restored machinery running in the capable hands of the dedicated volunteers, but for kids and grandkids there's also plenty to see and do, including some excellent working models and demonstrations. The outdoor Water Park with its stirrup pumps (squirt Grandad!) water buckets, hand-wheels and all sorts of other attractions is a big draw for the younger visitors. The volunteers who staff the museum could not have been kinder or more helpful, and are to be complimented for the high standards throughout. All the facilities (cafe, toilets etc) are spotless and the whole day was a great success. As Arnold once said... "I'll be back!"

Thank you for your kind review. It was especially appreciated as 4 July 2021 was our first Working Day with engines operating since the Museum closed in response to the Covid pandemic in March 2020. It was also a first day of working for many volunteers on site who had joined our team when the Museum was ready to re-open.

This is a special place. My boys find it fascinating on many levels its wonderful when the steam is running. Highly recommended experience when its running at full throttle.

We took a four year old,he loved the play area all the items are water related unfortunately due to the flooding the steam wasn’t running,but overall it was interesting will have to go again. They didn’t charge us for our visit.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Sunday 27 October was an extraordinary day, with the highest level of flooding seen at the Waterworks Museum in over 25 years. This meant we could not steam-up as advertised, which is why a decision was taken for free admission. We are pleased that, nonetheless, you enjoyed your visit and would consider a return on another occasion. Our Calendar of open-days for 2020 will be published in December.

Waterworks Museum in Hereford is not dull and is a great venue for a family outing!
Water is a finite resource and most people do not give it a second thought until it does not flow out of the tap! An outing to the Waterworks Museum Hereford on the banks of the River Wye dispels such thoughts. Visitors follow the route of water abstracted from the river and then follow its path through cleaning and disinfecting and on to delivery to consumers. This process involves a great deal of expertise and equipment and it needs to work 24/7. The fun park includes the unexpected catering for young family members who can learn by playing with all manner of devices that squirt and run. There are light refreshments too. An astonishing feature is the fact that the entire sophisticated operation is run 100% by volunteers with no Government subsidies and no salaries to the volunteers. (As a retired engineer I spent longer than many other visitors) They have an excellent website too!

Hello (I am replying as a volunteer at the Waterworks Museum). Please note that the water park is currently closed for winter maintenance - it will re-open on 18 March 2018, and will then be open each day the Museum is open until the end of October 2018. There is no admission charge for children under 3, then the charge for children is £2 whether you attend on a Tuesday or on an in-steam open-day. In addition to the water park there is a play area and dressing up box for younger children in the visitors centre. I hope this information is helpful.

Can I apologise that this question remained unanswered for so long. Admission charges for 2018 are unchanged for the 4th year in a row, as follows: Tuesday opening: adult £4, seniors £3, children £2 / in-steam days: adult £6, senior £5, children £2.
