Ramsgate is a handsome and elegant town. Addington Street was, many years ago, a busy shopping street which has recently seen something of a renaissance and Lee Nicholls has been an important part of that.
The gallery is in an historic building and in it Lee creates highly original and distinctive paintings and I found myself smiling constantly as I looked at them. Many (perhaps half?) have seaside subjects and I now have one of his prints (clearly based on Ramsgate harbour and capturing its spirit without being slavishly representational) on my wall at home to remind me of my trip and the good times I had.
Lee's pictures are reasonably priced (have a look at his web site to get an idea) but even if you cannot stretch to an original or a print, you can pick up one of the greetings cards he has used his canvasses to produce. Lee is a charming chap too so, even if you leave empty handed, you'll still be smiling.

Only in Ramsgate for a couple of days but managed to find Lee's shop open on Addington Street, having passed there the evening before and spotted the fabulous local artwork in the shop window. Ended up buying not one but two prints - now looking forward to getting them framed and put up back at home. Shame I won't be in town for the Addington Street Fair this Sunday - maybe next year !
