Amazing view.

Not the easiest of walks, to access the top of the hill, but the views you get, from the top, make the effort worthwhile.

Well worth the visit, great walk with amazing views.

Really enjoyable walk. Amazing views throughout with varying terrain and plenty of elevation.

We did the circular walk which takes in the old man of coniston and Dow Crag. Dow Crag path is a little less obvious in places put take your time and look arround and you will find it. Well worth it too as this then gives you views of the old man from the side and the decent back and path back are a nice gentle finish to the walk.

Allow a good 5 hours to allow time to stop and admire the views as they are amazing on a clear day. Very interesting to see the old mining buildings and cables as you ascend as well.

One thing to note is when going to Walna scar car park keep going tot he end of the road for the main car park as there is a small one you come to first in a field which charges more and means you have to hike up to the other to start the walk anyway. Signs are misleading (I believe on purpose) as it says Walna Scar on the car park but in small letters then says "road" as it is not Walna Scar car park. Very cheeky and caught a few people out when we were there which cost them time and a extra couple of £.

Love this climb, but weather could have been better

We parked in Coniston and took the main route up to the summit. Rewarded with some great views of Lake Coniston, Windermere and the coast line. We returned via Levers Water which was a slightly more difficult route down, but less busy and rewarded with a beautiful waterfall. This was my wife’s first attempt at climbing ‘The Old Man’. She found it hard work towards the end but completed the hike in about 4 hours. I’m so proud of her. Underfoot was a little difficult at times, but paths are ok in main if you have decent shoes. A good level of fitness is also required as the summit is 803 metres high. Brilliant day and well worth the effort.

Not easy but well worth it

Like others have said this is not the easiest walk however the views from the top are well worth it. I would recommend parking at the Walna Scar car park and walking from there. The most picturesque route in my opinion (and possibly the most difficult) would be to walk up the path past Big Hill up towards The Bell and the head off left towards the quarries as shown on the map. This way you are able to see Coniston water almost all the way up and you can visit the ruins.

Great walk, parking is difficult in busy season!
It can be hard going, pack the water and snacks if you are taking teens. Everyone is so nice on the way but dress for it, remember the weather does it's thing and moves quicker than us!

A VERY challenging track.
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
This is a VERY challenging track, which is only suitable for folks in great shape (and we weren't).
We tried to do it during a very hot day (almost 32 degrees) and after 2 hours of climbing - gave up as we were too exhausted.
Still, the view from the way was nice. No "WOW" effect, but still nice.

Friend suggested this one. We’ve visited the Lakes before and done the long route over Cat Bells which I consider a moderately difficult hike. The Old Man I would say is a lot more difficult.
We took the route from Walna Scar car park. From here we headed up Big Hill which ascends to a steep climb over rocks along Stubthwaite Crag to the summit.
Whist it was sunny to start we were soon immersed in cloud and it was very windy. Head wind of course. Walking from the summit we carried on to Goats Hawse. This part of the walk wasn’t as physically demanding but be warned the obvious paths disappear in parts, thankfully we have OS on our mobiles so we’re able to locate them again. This part of the walk was far less populated only passing two (professional looking hikers coming the opposite way). There are some shear cliff edges the path takes you along so take care.
We took the longer route down Dow Crag to meet with Walna Scar Road (not a tarmac road) stony downhill path back to the car park. 8 miles in total taking 5 hours.
Definitely go with plenty of warm waterproof clothing good walking boots hot coffee and an energy bar.
I would also strongly recommend an OS app to help with the unmarked footpaths…I don’t think a paper map would have been much help to be honest.

Best hike in the lakes
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2021 • ครอบครัว
This was a fantastic hike. Definitely the best and most interesting hike we did in the lakes, possibly one of the nicest hikes I have ever done. Knocked the socks of Scarfell Pike for sure. We started in the village and then did the circular walk via Goats water on the way up and then down the zig zag path to low water on the way down. From the village it was just shy of 8 miles and took us about 4 hours (with stops for snacks and taking lots of pictures). It was such an interesting hike. Lots of different terrain, some minor scrambling at points, beautiful bodies of water and the super cool old copper and slate mines. This was a tough hike though, lots of steep bits, especially the last push up to the top after goats water. If you are looking for a good challenging hike in the lakes - this is it.

Good walk, not for the feint hearted.

This is the first Fellow I have ever climed. I'd recommend starting on a smaller Fellow than the Old Man, if you are a beginner. Myself and my partner are relatively fit individuals and found this climb a challenge at times. Even though it was august, a waterproof jacket and a pair of long leggings in your bag are a must. I'd recommend at least 4 litres of water and take some nuts or energy bars on your ascent if you are to have a happy time. A physical map or a pdf on a phone are essential if you don't want to get lost.

We started in the village of Coniston at the very bottom and began our ascent following the Low Water route. In my opinion, if you are a good scrambler, this if by far the best way to get up. It is also the most physically straining way, with a lot of steep scrambling near the summit. However, the views on the way up are spectacular and you there are mining ruins that are visible on one of the flats that makes a perfect spot for a tea break...

I actually uttered the phrase ''shall we go back'' near the summit, because it was quite strenuous. Just to be clear I am not phsyically unfit, I run on a regular basis, its just a tough walk if its your first big hill.

We sumitted in about three hours ( we took our time) and were treated to some spectacular views of the lakes and Fellows nearby . We descented following Goats Water and were treated with a significantly more gentle experience. If you have young children or are physically less able, I'd recommend following this route up and down the Fellow. We got down to the village through the Walda Scar car park and went home throroughly tired but elated that we did this long climb and were treated to some spectacular views.

We parked at the Walna Scar car park walked up the first track off the Walna Scar road, which is signposted by painting on a rock. This is a steady climb but a bit less relentless and less rocky than the route past Low Water. It’s not a public footpath but is marked on the OS map as a black dashed path and is easy to follow. There were plenty of people following it on an August day. The views from the top are stunning in all directions. There are various options to take in other peaks if you want a slightly longer walk (we didn’t). If you’re lucky the ice cream van will be in the car park when you return.
