Max and Louise went on our honeymoon to Tanzania and climbed Kilimanjaro on the 7 day Machame route with Kandoo, our team name was Kili’in it (you can see pictures on Kandoo facebook page)! We had the most AMAZING time! We were in a group of 12, we all got on really well plus we all made it to the summit which made it an even more special experience - it was very hard but extremely rewarding.
Our guides August (lead guide), Amadeus, Juvenary, Justine, Estomy, Godfrey were all absolutely fantastic and made us feel comfortable, safe and informed at all times. They were lovely people and we had a great laugh with them at the same time as receiving a very professional service. They even carried some of our day packs (in addition to their own heavy bags!) on some of the tough climbs, they worked extremely hard for us.
The porters and cooks were the real hero’s of the trip, we ate like kings and queens (there was much more lovely hot food than we were expecting). They worked SO hard carrying all our kit, setting up the camps, fetching water. They treated us so well, nothing was ever too much to ask and always in a friendly way with great attitude. They even got us hot water bottles for the cold nights, sang for us and made us feel very cared for.
Special mentions go to James the chef and Hassan, Gabriel, David, Ibrahimu and Salvatory. They really were amazing people.
Kandoo provided a brilliant service for us. The tour was well planned and all the advanced information was very good. A nice addition was that the guides posted a group photo of us all on their facebook page every day so our family and friends at home could follow our progress!
For those considering the trip, in terms of difficulty it was very manageable for the first 3-4 days (especially with all the team taking care of you!), hikes were 4-6hrs per day, trekking high and sleeping low. Baranco wall was challenging but really fun (less scary than it looks in the videos you see). Summit night was very hard (and the way back down!), especially for those struggling in the altitude, but manageable with a positive attitude. Truthfully you need it to be a test to get a real feeling of fulfilment, all 12 of us got to the summit with a mixed group of abilities. This wouldn’t have happened without the amazing guide and porter team that we had!
We very highly recommend Kandoo and all the team we had, Asante Sana!!!!!

Hiked Kilimanjaro with Kandoo adventures in October 2024. The trip was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The Guides (August and team) were amazing, spoke great English, were really well informed and a good laugh to be around.
The hike itself was a lot harder than I anticipated, although our entire group of 12 made it to the summit.
Recommend bringing some gifts/snacks to the trip for the guides/porters - they deserve it!

Thanks to our guides Raymond, Elias and Godfrey, we had an excellent 7 days on the Machame Route on the way to Uhuru Peak, Mt Kilimanjaro. Professional and extremely helpful. The porters were first class. Again, extremely helpful and hardworking and smiling/singing when we returned to camp. We had Oscar standing in as a guide on part of the trip and he was excellent too. Tents, sleeping bags and meals all spot on. No issues whatsoever. Highly recommend Kandoo for this trip.

I have nothing but great things to say about Kandoo Adventures. My dad and I did the Lemosho Route up Mount Kilimanjaro and I would tribute my amazing experience to Kandoo Adventures. All of the staff were incredible, they treated us with nothing but kindness, care and support. Their expertise and authenticity made us feel cared for every step of the way - we trusted them completely and felt as though they knew us better than we knew ourselves. Our guides - Amedeus and Tumaini were some of the kindest, smartest, and most patient people. We believe that we wouldn't have reached the peak without them. Our team of porters felt like a second family on the mountain and we were so impressed with their thoughtfulness towards us by always going above and beyond to make us feel safe and supportive - not to mention all of the laughter and great conversations we shared.
If you're considering climbing Mount Kilimanjaro - which was a phenomenal experience and a trip of a lifetime, I couldn't recommend Kandoo adventures more!
We also did the 4-day safari with our guide Juma who was so kind, helpful, personable. He was extremely knowledgable about every question we had about the animals, Tanzania, the communities we drove through, etc.

I had the most incredible time climbing Kilimanjaro for the second time with Kandoo Adventures! After being evacuated in 2019 I knew I'd be back and I knew it would be with Kandoo, their attention to detail and care for their customers are next level which is why I will chose and recommend them time and time again. We had Filbert, Claude and James as guides and they were absolutely amazing, I summited with Filbert as the others went ahead and he was amazing, when I lost my sight he and our summit porter helped me down and reassured me I would be okay, I couldn't thank him enough for his hard work, not just on summit night but throughout the whole trek. They really go the extra mile to ensure you're safe and healthy. When I was getting anxious about last time, the guides did everything to calm me down, one morning they even sang Swahili songs to me to calm me down. James, Claude and Filbert were always so happy, singing along with us, smiling and laughing, their energy is honestly what got us through the tough parts. This was truly the best experience of my life and Kandoo contributed to that so much! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I took part in the Lemosho hike and it was hands down one of the best experiences I have had. Our guide Robert and assistant guide Tadeus were second to none. They were experienced, attentive and beyond fantastic and it is for them and the rest of the porter team and incredible Chef I have given this score. I had read many reviews about the Kandoo Kilimanjaro hike and they are all accurate - this really was an incredible experience made possible by the incredible team.
I have used Kandoo previously for the Inca trial and was impressed with the experience. However, after the hike this time I did a one day safari and was really disappointed. My driver was an hour late and we finished a good 90 or so minutes ahead of time. Mainly due to the fact here wasn’t much to see and the few animals we did see I had seen on the way to the mountain - more so as no one responded to my comments from the office and in addition to the disappointing one day safari, my experience in the final hotel was unacceptable and the house keeping was incredibly rude and actually turned up to my room earlier than agreed and told me to check out then proceeded to watch me as she stood in the room. If I was to do this trip again I would go for a longer safari as others in my hiking group did and they had an amazing experience. Or I would cut out the safari and spend more time organising my own end of trip travel. What should have been a treat at the end of the hike turned into an expensive mistake. I recommend Kandoo for the hikes but my experience for anything extra has not been great. Overall, the actual team on the mountain made this so worth it! If you end up with either Robert or Tadeus or the wonderful chef, Soster, you’re in amazing hands! Thank you to the gorgeous team and wonderful porters! Especially Paschal, without him I wouldn’t have got to the summit!

My Kilimanjaro experience started in August 2014, 10 years ago. I booked an 8-day Lemosho trek for myself, son and daughter with Private Expeditions (now known as Kandoo Adventures). However, on the flight from Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro, my twenty-year-old son had a seizure. Never having had a seizure before, this was a horrendous shock and immediately changed our plans. Luckily there were four doctors on the flight that explained what had happened and were able to list what procedures we had to go through in the following days when we landed. The Private Expeditions representative was still waiting for us, despite us having had to see a doctor in the airport and being the last ones to come out of arrivals. He then took us to the local Moshi hospital where they took blood samples and booked us into the ‘western’ hospital in Arusha for CT scan the following day. He then met us the following day to take us to an early morning hospital appointment in Arusha, waited with us for the results and then took us back to our hotel in Moshi.
With all this happening we obviously had to cancel our Kilimanjaro trek and were not allowed to travel back to the UK until 2 weeks after the original seizure. With the test results coming back showing no issues, we then tried to turn the situation into something positive. Again, Private Expeditions came to the rescue and organised the best safari you could wish for. Considering it was all organised in a day we stayed in fantastic lodges in amazing locations and experienced a safari of a lifetime.
When returning home, my son was diagnosed with epilepsy and put on medication, thankfully resulting in no further seizures.
Ten years on our desire to climb Kilimanjaro was still there, so when we decided, we were going to try again, it was a ‘no brainer’, we had to use Private Expedition. It’s all very well looking at reviews that have a great rating when all goes smoothly, but I knew that Private Expeditions could excel when an unexpected disaster happens. Private Expeditions changed their name back in 2014 to Kandoo Adventures (I believe because the old name made people think they only did treks for private groups). When checking I even noticed they still had staff there that were around in 2014.
We booked the same trek – Lemosho 8 day staying at the Bristol Cottages Hotel whilst in Moshi.
Upon arrival, we were picked up by a friendly Kandoo representative at the airport who drove us safely to our hotel, The Bristol Cottages in Moshi. The Bristol Cottages were clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly, and the food was very nice. We arrived a day early, just in case of flight or luggage delays. There was another Kandoo representative, Emanuel who greeted us at the hotel and organised a small, guided tour of Moshi for the following free day, before we were due to meet our lead guide late afternoon.
At 4 o'clock we met our fellow trekkers, 4 more people, making our team of 7, three women and four men. We also met our lead guide called August. August was very eloquent and friendly. Explaining what our team will consist of, porters, cook and guides. What the maximum weight of our duffle bag could be and what will be happening on our first day. He proceeded to do our initial health check and state the importance of eating and drinking throughout our trek.
Day one - We were picked up in a large minibus, where we met our other two guides, Deus and Elias and some of the porters. Halfway between Moshi and the Lemosho Gate we met up with another minibus containing the remaining porters. You’ll be amazed at how many people are required to help get 7 people to the top of this mountain. We had 23 porters 1 cook and three guides. Whilst we registered and had our pack lunch at the start, the porters did their magic. Whizzing past us, carrying all the equipment to set up our camp for that night ahead. The trek through the rain forest, to the Mkuba Camp was a good warm up. Beautiful green scenery all around made more interesting by the odd colobus monkey coming to view the mad tourist strolling through their land. We got to our camp which was already set up in an ideal location. Our camp consisted of our tents, a dining tent, cooking tent, WC tent and then various tents for the guides, cook and porters. This was duplicated by other companies doing the same route. I will say that Kandoo did seem to get the better pitches at each camp site. The evening ritual then began, ‘happy hour’ which consisted of hot drinks and snacks, followed by our health check and a run down of what was install for the follow day. We then had a wonderful 3 course meal prepared by James our cook and served by Neli. Our first night under canvas was interesting, with all the different animal noises dispersed with the occasional human one.
Day two – From Mkubwa to Shira 1 camp. Our first morning ritual of health check and scrumming breakfast. Today was one of my ‘bad’ days and I lived up to my self-proclaimed name of ‘Old man of the group’ being 58 years old. All the time you are told to drink plenty of water, and I thought I was, but during a very long up hill climb, in glorious sunshine, I started getting cramps in both quad muscles. This slowed everyone down, (sorry team) but we eventually made it. I found out when we got to camp that I wasn’t any good at using the backpack bladder bag, as it was still half full. From then on, I just used the bladder bag to carry the water that I then used to fill up my water bottles. Which seemed to work as no more cramps.
Day three – Shira 1 to Moir Hut. Much better walk for all the team, with all of us arriving at camp feeling in good spirits and we were given the option of an additional trek of approximately 150m up an adjacent slope, to help with the altitude acclimatation. ‘climb high, sleep low’.
Day four – Moir Hut to Lava Tower then Barranco Camp – Today was our first proper experience of altitude sickness. One of our team woke up feeling nauseous, which then progressed to vomiting throughout the day. This person was made of strong stuff as they continued to fulfil the days itinerary and got to the Barranco camp, but for their own safety they were given an ultimatum by the lead guide, who had stayed with them all day. The ultimatum was after a good night sleep (aided by a sleeping pill donated by one of our group) they had to eat and drink some of the following days breakfast and keep it down.
Day five – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp – Described in the Kandoo literature as ‘A short but fun day, starting with a scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall’. I really don’t think I should comment as you might not want to attempt to climb Kilimanjaro if I did. However what I will say is all seven of our group did it, including a person who had been continually vomiting the previous day, all the guides did it and made it look so easy and all our porters did it carrying all the equipment on their backs and/or heads. An experience you’ll never forget and I’m so proud of everyone for doing it.
Day six – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (Kili Base camp). This day is probably the easiest of the days, as it is aimed to get you to camp in plenty of time to eat and rest before you start your summit attempt. This was the case for us however the weather started to change, from the beautiful clear sunny days we had experienced all the time so far, to an overcast and cloudy evening with some snow starting to fall. We had an early evening meal and told to try and sleep as we would be woken at 10:30 ready to start our summit attempt. August made the decision to leave earlier as the camp was pretty full and he didn’t want us to have to queue at the very top for photographs.
Day seven - (really still day six) – Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp. After listening to the wind and snow for hours, I was surprised to still hear the wake-up call, but we were still going to attempt to get to the top. Our group was the first to set off and the snow was still falling. How our guides knew the way will always surprise me, but they did. (You may think up is up, but not in a blizzard). This night was so hard, but with the huge encouragement and help from our Kandoo guides and fellow teammates we got to Stella Point. Unfortunately, no magnificent sunrise for us as there was still a snowstorm happening, so after a short rest we set off for the summit. This last bit seemed to take forever, but we all got there. 5895m high in a snowstorm and thanks to our wonderful guides, no queueing for photos and time to enjoy this moment. Then, no pun intended, it was all downhill from here. A 7-8 hour, 2795 metre descent over 13km and in our case this was on snow and ice. My knees will never forgive me. Again, the guides were amazing, assessing who need help and being there for them. I personally had August holding my arm virtually all the way down.
Day eight – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – After a well-earned sleep we had breakfast and the opportunity to say thank you to all the wonderful Kandoo team. Then there was the small matter of another final trek down 1300 metres (note Ben Nevis – UK’s tallest mountain is 1345 metres high). That cold beer at the bottom is one of the best and well deserved.
If you are still here reading this review, then well done, I’ll try to summarise my feelings about Kandoo and this trip. – Kandoo as a company are very organised, professional and understanding of your needs, which are also aptitudes adopted by their staff in the UK and Africa. In the quiet times, either on the walk or in the tent after dinner the guides are happy to discuss their own lives, country and culture. They all have a great sense of humour, but also you know you are in the hands of people with years of experience and will ensure everyone’s safety throughout your trip.
Even though it is only just over a week you soon realise how important each of the Kandoo team is, necessary and also happy for you, to be able to successfully succeed in your dream to climb Kilimanjaro. They will all do anything they can to ensure you successfully ascend and DESCEND safely and walk away enjoying the experience with memories that will last a lifetime.
Thank you Kandoo, especially August, Deus and Elias.
And also, another big thank you to my fellow trekkers / achievers and all together wonderful people.

I’ve just finished an incredible three week trek through the Three Passes, Three Peaks and Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Kandoo is excellent, everything is organised for you ahead of time. Hera, our guide, and our porter, Kiran Rai, couldn’t have been more helpful and lovely; it was genuinely a pleasure getting to know them. 10/10.

From booking to summiting these guys are the best. Nothing was too much trouble from the uk team to the Tanzania porters!

We had the best adventure on our 4 day trek on the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. Alex our guide was absolutely superb. So much knowledge on the way and his enthusiasm was infectious. The whole kandoo team were brilliant. The chef prepared amazing meals and catered for us being vegetarian excellently. The porters were incredible. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. We all had a fabulous time. Thank you! X
