What's good about the shop?
- Book selection? Check
- Fabulous kids/teenager section? Check
- Knowledgable, helpful, enthusiastic staff? Check
- Nice selection of cards, wrapping paper etc? Check
- Location in the heart of town? Check
Positive one of the shops I want to go back to again and again and again.
Anything that's missing? Perhaps an armchair and a cup of tea. Maybe that's a good thing as you probably wouldn't leave the place anytime soon.

Hello there,
Thank you for your kind comments. Penrith today is cold (check), grey (check) and rainy (check) so it has brightened out day to read your review on a fairly rubbish afternoon.
Once upon a time we did have a small tea room at the back of the shop but it was too small to be viable plus there is no space for a dishwasher in the kitchen so it all got a bit chaotic - so sadly the tea room had to go.

I visited this small bookshop on my way home from Manchester on the 07/11/15. What a lovely little place! Everything is very organised and there are lots of little novelties to buy too. The lady who served us was extremely nice and even went hunting for a book when I couldn't find it. I could tell she valued each person's custom. If you're looking to support an independent business and you're in Penrith, I highly recommend you visit here!

On a cold day we found a warm welcome and lovely coffee. Couldn't resist the children's books and the selection of jigsaws.

We arrived in Penrith on a Sunday could only find a costas however did find a wee sign up a lane. Its one of Penriths hidden gems the own was delightful same with the bookshop. Scones home made and delish, coffee and tea fresh, there are little jigsaws on each table to while away your time. I will certainly be going back.

Slightly hidden in a little side-street this bookshop is well worth the visit if travelling near buy. It is even open on Sunday afternoons. It has a little café, kids and gifts section downstairs. Upstairs it has a proper range of books with little recommendations, local authors advertised and even a comfy seat to sit and look through. My husband who is not a book person walked out with a little package of 4 books last time we were in. As another reviewer mentioned each book is wrapped up to protect it also. Lovely little traditional bookstore.

I could have spent hours in here, and I know if my daughters had been with me, we would have. Fantastic range of children's books for all ages. Friendly and knowledgeable owner who was happy to make recommendations based on reading ability and books previously enjoyed. Everything was beautifully packaged in recycled paper. Definitely worth the detour when travelling on M6. As it was I came out with lots of books and other items, and am really happy with them all.

Quite honestly one of the best bookshops I've ever been to. The children's book selection was amazing, not just current popular titles but some classics from my childhood too. The board book section is brilliant.
Then you go upstairs... I only had a quick look at the fiction, mainly because having a small child dosen't leave much time for reading anything which doesn't rhyme or is printed on actual paper.
I also had to restrain myself in the non-fiction section as there were some interesting titles which really should have come home with me...
Basically if you go to this bookshop increase your book budget for the month, and if you have a child to buy books for then this is the place to come. It's just a shame we were on holiday and live so far away!

That's very kind of you - thank you. (Although I must warn readers that anybody looking for Jeffrey Archer or Tony Blair in here is going to be sadly disappointed. There are some books which are just never going to have shelf space in this shop.......)

Luckily we spotted the street sign seeking a soup and found a scone surprise. Tucked away in a side street this small independent book shop also serves a delicious soup, scone and more. Jigsaws and sample books are available and the marketing worked well as we bought one after a most enjoyable lunch.

Called in to Hedgehog Bookshops with a 10 year old and 13 year old in tow. We'd called in just to look around but I was drawn to the cafe at the back of the shop and amazed to find I could get a scone and cup of tea for just £2.70. Amazing value and the scone was delicious and the tea was great - they have a great range of teas to choose from. My daughter had a hot chocolate and massive slice of flapjack that cost just 90p! While we were there we tried out the mini jigsaws on the table and ended up buying two of them, plus a book. I'd say the only thing I could fault the bookshop on is the fact that there aren't more tables - we called back another day and couldn't see a free table, but you could just browse the books until a table comes free.

The space thing is a bit difficult. I had thought about taking a wall down to fit a couple of extra tables in, but we rent the building so that gets a bit complicated with the landlord. It may happen some time next year....... watch this space.....
