Went to the birdcage for a birthday meal for a friend. There was six of us and we had two tables which they put together. The birdcage has a fantastic bar situated in the centre of the bar/ restaurant serving a wide range of beers and spirits.
The food in offer ranges from burgers, salads, steaks and sharing platters. Our food arrived all at the same time and the food was delicious. The big fry up sharing platter had chicken strips calamari borek hummus dips pita bread and mozzarella sticks. The burgers were big and juicy. The sweet potato fries were delicious they do a range of desserts and teas and coffees.
The birdcage has TVs situated around the bar and restaurant and has sky sports showing the football rugby etc.
Our server LIly was lovely and helpful we Would definitely go again

Waiter 1 took our drinks order and brought these over. Waiter 1 took our food order:
four starters and four main courses. The food order, included one chicken shish with rice and one chicken shish with chips. He wrote these down. Waiter 1 then came back to double check what the mains were. We repeated them. Waiter 1 came back again to give us paper place mats. In doing this he knocked my mum's full glass of wine all over me. I was soaked. My jumper and skirt were drenched. My iPhone and handbag luckily were only slightly wet. Accidents happen. Once I had dried off as much as possible, and we had dried the table we carried on.
Waiter 2 came over and asked if we were ok. My mum said 'we just had an accident'. Waiter 2 said 'Oh that is ok'. My mum explained that Waiter 1 had caused the accident - Waiter 2 apologised and said that she would serve us.
The starters were brought over. The prawns and the calamari were ok. The onion rings were below average, the dressing on the side salad / garnish tasted slightly off. The olives looked like they were off the counter from a supermarket deli and shoved into a bowl.
While we were beginning to eat our starters Waiter 2 brought over two of the main courses. We asked her to take them back to the kitchen until we finished our starters. She looked really annoyed by this. Once our starters were finished, we had to wait a while and they brought over two main courses. We checked these were hot, as they had been sitting somewhere until we finished our starters. They were hot. There was no sign of the other two main courses. Eventually, Waiter 1 came over, and said the other meals are on the way, 'please be patient'. I said it is not about being patient. We have come out to eat together, we ordered the meals at the same time; and we expect to eat together. He repeated, 'please be patient'. Which was quite annoying as he had completely disregarded what I had just said.
My vegetarian moussaka was mediocre. My dad's sirloin steak was good. A while later they brought over two lamb shish. This is not what we had ordered. They took these away and said they would take the bring the two chicken shish.
Waiter 3 (who may have been a supervisor / manager) came over and said 'I believe there has been a problem, what has happened?' I explained everything I have written above. He apologised, said the other two main courses would be with us soon; and that he would do something to put right what had happened. While my dad and I ate our meals we shared our chips with my mum and husband. I had finished my meal and my dad had nearly finished his when they brought over the two chicken shish. The whole night had really gone down the drain. My mum barely ate her meal as she no longer felt hungry due to the upset and the long wait for the food.
While they were eating Waiter 3 came over to ask if everything was ok. We all ignored him, as it was clear that everything was not ok. It was obvious that we were really unhappy and that we couldn't wait to get out of there.
As soon we had finished we asked for the bill. Without asking us, Waiter 3 came over with a platter of what looked like six or seven desserts. Assuming that there were seven, it was one of each dessert on the menu, the cost to buy these would have been £33.20.
We said that we didn't want the desserts. We had had an awful night and we wanted to go home. We asked for the bill because we wanted the bill. We did not want dessert.
Waiter 3 took the desserts away and came back with an £82.30 bill and said that he would take 10% off i.e. £8.23. I asked if he was joking. He said no and that there was nothing else he could do because the till wouldn't let him do anything more. He said that was why he brought the desserts over because he could only take 10% off.
I told him that it would cost more than the 10% to get my clothes dry cleaned. He repeated that there was nothing he could do. We paid the bill minus 10% and left. He wasted the desserts @ £33.20 and knocked 10% off the bill which came to £41.43. If he had taken that amount off the bill i.e. halved it we would have accepted that we had a bad night and left. We now feel disgusted by the food, service and the 'computer says no' mentality. Waiter 1's incompetent and clumsiness was bad enough. Add to that Waiter 2 telling us she would serve us, not doing so; and getting the hump that we didn't want our mains with our starters. Topped off with Waiter 3 not being able to do anything to significantly make up for a catastrophic evening because the till won't let him. Not a good recipe for a successful business.
Do yourself a favour. Go a little bit further along the road into Stoke Newington and pick a restaurant there.

Don't even think of eating here! We booked for Sunday roast. Both meals were tepid & tasteless. Pork came with cool flabby fat, no crackling. Not only bad but also overpriced. Yuk.

The Birdcage is a pub quite near my house and recently appeared on Deliveroo, which brought me to order from them after a long day in the gym.
The item I ordered was their Sirloin Steak served with skin-on chips, grilled asparagus, roasted cherry tomatoes and mushroom and my choice of classic Béarnaise sauce.
By and large the restaurants in my neck of the woods are quite decent with quite good food and drinks, very few disappointments and sometimes even an occasional wow. Based on this I assumed that Birdcage would be broadly similar and expected something pleasant to eat pretty much like every other day of the week.
To further add to my misapprehensions, the restaurant even called me up asking how I would like my steak. I thinking it was nice of them stated that I'd like it rare.
As such it arrived packaged nicely in a Birdcage labelled paper bag and initially looked outwardly presentable but this by far is one of the worst things I've tasted in a long, long time.
To begin with the steak was covered in what seemed like processed onions and mushrooms; out of a can in all probability.
The sides were dreadful. They had put some peculiar yellow substance into an avocado skin and had added some kind of potato tower, both of which were quite pointless and dreadful. The additional sides consisted of vegetables; carrots and broccoli covered in some kind of faux gravy analogue possibly with MSG or something similar in it. There were also some rather sad looking chips in a box, which along with the broccoli were the only remotely edible things in the whole mix.
The steak itself was old, smelled very strange (almost rancid) was overcooked as opposed to their suggestions of it being rare and seemed to have fake grill marks on it. It was also foul to the taste. I think the steak was some dreadful pre-processed product, which came cooked and frozen to go in the microwave or howsoever they’re heating it.
After a few bites it all went straight into the bin and the bin-bag went downstairs, though it all had this odour, which haunts you even after it’s disposed off.
Truly, truly dreadful.
By its incongruousness, what I think is happening is these people are effectively trying to capitalise off the backs of the various other decent restaurants and pubs/bars around Stoke Newington. They’re buying in cheap processed frozen rubbish, hawking it and laughing their way to the bank. My reckoning is they’re probably owned as part of a portfolio of pubs by some nasty, money-grubbing corporate.
If this steak was anything to go by I would recommend avoiding these people altogether. There’s far, far better places just a few metres away.
