I was here for a 20.00 performance of "Mating Behaviour", a charming, witty and well acted fringe production at this quaint, down to earth venue.
I really liked how earthy it was, various armchairs and types of seating with cushions and on, very intimate it's like being in someone's large lounge, though houses 60 guests when full.
2018 will be it's 50th anniversary of the theatre and if Leonie was the lovely lady who welcomed me and remembered me by name as I left, I can see why it's lasted and thrived; it's her energy, warm charm and passion for showcasing new artists and productions that has given this longevity. Well known performers like Russell Brand, Adrian Edmundson, Ben Elton, French and Saunders, Nigel Havers, Celia lmrie started out here.
It's a lovely fringe theatre and why I'd have no hesitation recommending it to others.
It is above the Horseshoe pub so ideal to have drinks and dinner there first, but I only saw and used the wooden staircase so do call in advance if you have accessibility requirements.
3 minutes from Hampstead Station ( Northern Line) it's certainly one I'll be visiting again.

Fringe theatre in London is spectacularly unique.
Odd spaces from Warehouse, to rooms above Pubs are used to put on stunning and innovative performances.
But Pentameters is a stunning example.
Yes, it is indeed above a Pub but it's certainly no small room. It seats 60.
It's been run by the same couple since 1968, so is about to celebrate it's 50th anniversary next year (2018).
You enter the establishment up some rickety stairs (disabled accessible this is most definitely not) and the seating arrangements are often styled for the performance. Living room sofa's make up the front row, armchairs and cushions and steps make for the rest of the auditorium, though it can be staged with normal plastic stacking chairs too I believe.
Everything feels ramshackled, begged, borrowed or stolen, but it feels none the worse for it, in fact it adds a real sense of adventure to attend the theatre.
There are no catering facilities once you enter the theatre, but you're welcome to bring things in with you.
The Three Horse Shoe pub below it, can provide all your alcohol requirements, but if you're looking for an Ice Cream or Hot Chocolate there's Venchi Cioccolao Gelato (a small Italian Chain with two outlets in London) on the corner 2 minutes away, that does an excellent and delicious selection.
The very nature of the space, means it would be impossible to have an interval, so all productions run from start to finish. Generally lasting anything up to two hours.
It's normally used for revivals of classic productions, but the most recent play for me, was a new work written by first time playwright, Imogen Palmer and entitled Convergence (8th April 2017).
Everyone, who ever visits London usually has Theatre as a must do activity on their list and unlike it's West End counterparts, this venue is exceptional value, with tickets never being more expensive than £13 each.
It's situated in Hampstead within minutes of the tube, so a trip can always been conjoined with a walk on the Heath or following a Pint in The Flask.
A simple visit to the theatre would be worth the cost of admission alone, but catch a great show and this is definitely the best London Fringe experience in town.

Superb show making Francis Bacon come alive! Excellent text, staging , acting. Every show at the theatre is hand picked, and this one was no exception.

This is an interesting performance space above a pub in Hampstead. The play we saw ," The Easter Rising 1916" was a bit tedious - rather didactic and intent on giving a balanced , revisionist view of events of the time , but with little dramatic value and not that well acted . Nevertheless it's easy enough to see the potential of space as a home for small cast drama and all in all we enjoyed our visit .

Superb acting, meaningful play, interesting set and delightful fringe-theatre space. The seats are unreserved and having arrived early I was lucky enough to get the best seats in the house: front row on a sofa! I'd read about Leonie Scott-Matthews, the founder, and she was truly inspirational. How wonderful to meet a woman so welcoming and so passionate about theatre. Her team was equally great. I saw the penultimate performance of "The Secret Life of Francis Bacon" but I believe it will return in the spring. Excellent. Note of warning: The theatre is located above the Horseshoe pub and there are some very steep stairs up to it. There is a toilet and you may take in your own drinks.

Small first floor theatre above a heaving pub in the centre of Hampstead. Intimate, front room scale, just right for seeing a play with a few actors in. We saw one about a legendary Irish singer - Liam Clancy performed by three actors in Aran sweaters - including the delicious captivating Roisin Monaghan.
Worked well and bossed by a small eccentric old lady who does the tickets, door and general maitre 'd stuff. Splendid location and format - its places like this that give London its hidden character !

We moved to Hampstead 1yr ago and had not visited Pentameters Theatre until now, it’s a small theatre – large living, above a pub. We went to see “INTIMATE EXCHANGES” – a play by Alan Ayckbourn. The play is acted by 2 wonderful actors who play 4 roles. As the venue is intimate, the play surrounds you and is very enjoyable as its like having a private performance in your living room. The theatre is basic but sufficient and serviced by the pub below so you have everything you need. It certainly is a good value for money evening out and well worth a visit, we will be returning.

If you are near Hampstead this is a lovely little theatre. It's tiny, it feels more like someone's living room. If you sit in the front, you are just 2 metres from the actors; it's intimate. The acting is good, I'm always impressed by the long pieces of speech they memorise. Tickets are fairly cheap. A friendly, informal theatre well worth a visit.
The pub below is good, many pubs and restaurants in the area. Great crepe stall at the top of the High Street by the King William pub.
