I visited the castle museum whilst staying in Norwich recently (March 2023). Staff were helpful, and the displays were interesting. I was particularly hoping to see remnants from HMS Gloucester, and this exhibition did not disappoint!
I actually got free admission (due to working at a reciprocal museum), but I believe prices were around £8 - which is more than reasonable for what you can see.
There are a range of galleries covering the social history of the last few millenia, as well as natural history (with a focus on Norfolk of course), and some art galleries.
If you are staying in Norfolk, this is definitely worth doing!
My only disappointment (although I did know this from the website), was that the castle keep is closed for redevelopment, but prices were amended accordingly.
Well done Norfolk Museums Service!

We booked to visit the Last Voyage of the Gloucester and paid the going rate. Whilst the exhibition was good as far as we could see, it was so overcrowded that we missed all the film parts and in other places there were lots of people looking at the exhibits so you couldn’t see them. Some sort of crowd control needed. Looked like 2 bus trips in of different age groups too. Cafe had youngsters sitting on the floor so busy. Might be good for the museum but not for visitors. Go when it has been on for a long time and should be quieter.

While parts of the castle are closed due to construction work, the natural history museum and art gallery are still open, and are really worth a visit! I'm a huge fan of natural history and really enjoyed the taxidermy and dioramas on display. The art gallery was well presented and included a good variety of work, including a lot of landscapes and images from the local area. I liked seeing the focus on Norwich and the surrounding areas in both the artwork and the dioramas, which presented scenes from Norfolk and the animals that might live there. Compared to eg the natural history museum in London, this museum was a lot less crowded so I got a really good look at the displays. Entry fee includes a voucher for admission to another local museum, to compensate for the castle closures. This is an excellent deal, so don't let the closures put you off visiting this spectacular place!

For only £7 each we spent hours looking at the exhibits and art on display. I'm not a fan of taxidermy, but even I appreciated the dioramas. The Singh twins exhibit was amazing, educational and disturbing. The Iceni and Boudica exhibit was informative and the militaria was both informative and poignant. Art galleries were really nice - just wish the Turner hadn't been on tour. His use of light is superb and I wish I had seen the real thing, as I have enjoyed seeing many of his paintings in the past.
What a fantastic few hours! I can only imagine how good it will be when the work is finished

Thank you for feedback on your recent visit to Norwich Castle Museum and Art Galleries. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit especially our Singh Twins exhibit and hopefully you managed to see the exhibition continued at the East Gallery. We are glad you found all our galleries interesting and informative. As you mentioned, the Turner is on tour at one of our other Norfolk Museums. We are really looking forward to when the keep project is completed and we look forward to seeing you back too. Thank you

We arrived late afternoon, paid full admission, and only had an hour to visit the mediocre museum. Still, something to do, but you are not provided access to the main castle nor do you have the ability to step out and see the view.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent visit to Norwich Castle Museum and Art Galleries. The keep is closed to the public due to our major redevelopment, the Palace Reborn project. Our reduced ticket price and voucher for free admission to Museum of Norwich reflects this. The only view we can offer now is from the mound, which remains a lovely view. Thank you

Great little museum with helpful staff. I liked the historical background of the area. Loved the special exhibit by the talented Singh Twins. It is worth the admission.

Not really a castle anymore. Just a museum and not that engaging. I was rather disappointed as teh castle should have had more to say for itself

We visited the castle as part of our 1 day visit to Norwich.
I booked ahead using my art pass(free entry).
The museum is very interesting but I dont like stuffed animals!
The art gallery was very good.
The grounds are not very nice and were spoilt on this day by Pride revellers!

Visitors should not be charged £7 each to view a few stuffed animals, a few paintings and small selection of militaria. They should not charge and hope for a donation.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent visit to Norwich Castle Museum and Art Galleries. We’re sorry to hear you had a disappointing visit. The Keep is currently closed to the public due to our major redevelopment, the Palace Reborn project. As you can imagine for such a substantial renovation, we have had to close some galleries and display collections in other areas of the museum. We are offering a reduced ticket price to reflect this. Thank you.

When I was planning my trip, I was a bit disappointed to learn that the keep is currently undergoing major renovation work and is therefore closed. But since the museum is open, I decided to visit anyway, as it was my first time in Norwich.
Finding the entrance proved a bit challenging, as I was walking halfway around the hill and then back again - only to realise after my visit that had I walked just about 50 metres further, there would have been another entrance, so I could have saved myself the long walk. Given that the museum is extensive, with lots of treasures to see, my feet would probably have thanked me for that...
And yes, there is a LOT to see: From paintings to archaeology to stuffed wild animals - it's vast! I hadn't been expecting that.
The individually themed areas all have their individual entrance, but are also interconnected, which can be rather confusing, because if you don't pay attention, then you're suddenly stepping from the gallery zone with paintings to the Roman history zone... In fact, several times I got lost and had to retrace my steps, as I felt that I was missing out on some areas. Maybe it would help to assist visitors with better signposting to indicate the general recommended flow.
Apart from that, I did like what I saw, especially the large number of paintings!
In the end, I just about managed to get around all the areas by the time I heard the announcement of the closing time.
I would certainly love to be back after the re-opening of the castle itself, hopefully also with a proper souvenir shop, as the museum shop was rather disappointing.
But overall I did enjoy my time in the museum and believe it's well worth a visit!

Thank you for your feedback on your recent visit to Norwich Castle Museum and Art Galleries. We’re glad to hear you had a lovely visit and enjoyed our range of collections. As you have mentioned, the Keep is closed due to a major redevelopment for the Palace Reborn project. All signage is now under review due to the feedback we have received. Changes will include how to find the museum entrance as well as finding your way around the museum. Due to the redevelopment, we are currently offering a small retail experience, but once the redevelopment is complete our new shop will be open with new merchandise to purchase. We look forward to seeing you again. Thank you.

I will only have approximately an hour, will this be reasonable time to visit and do the dungeon tour?
Thanks for your question Leigh. We would usually recommend at least 2-3 hours to see everything at Norwich Castle and any tours on top of that. Dungeon tours are an extra that are bookable for a small fee on top of admission and are only bookable on the day so you might find that this is too much to achieve in an hour in order to get the best value for money from your ticket. Current prices and information on what you can see at Norwich Castle is available on our website.

Hello, I would like to visit with my disabled sons. Do you have a Changing Place?
Thank you for your question Emma. We have 4 wheelchair accessible toilets at Norwich Castle, but currently no Changing Places toilets. We are hoping to move forward with building work planned in 2019 that will include a new Changing Places facility so we are hoping to have this available in the near future.

I don't think dogs are allowed inside the castle but probably in the grounds.
The castle is accessed by steps and lift from a public thoroughfare where there are seats and people have dogs on leads.

Good morning Norwich castle. Can anyone tell me if it is permitted to bring in your own food, snacks etc , whilst on a visit?. or does one have to purchase food from the facility provided on site?. Thank you. Martin.

Dear Martin,
Thank you for your enquiry,
We would of course love you to sample the delights of the cafe at Norwich Castle, renowned for their ever popular selection of homemade scones and quiche however....we do also have a picnic room which you are most welcome to use to consume your packed lunch. It can be located on the first floor leading off from the Rotunda balcony and can be accessed by stairs or the lift; there is also an accessible toilet in this area with a baby changing facility.
Look forward to seeing you soon,

Good Morning Norwich Castle. Can anyone tell me if, when on a visit to the castle, is it permitted to take your own food in?. I remember when I was a child, we did this, but I don't think there was a cafe at that time. I have tried ringing, but just get a recorded message. Not much help. Martin.
