The Cathedral is a great size with plenty of artwork, sculptures, stained glass and woodwork carving. The main attraction are the carved choir pews, which are very impressive in their construction.

Very welcoming. Amazingly it's free to visit, and there are free tours too. The guide who led our tour was excellent - I would not have gleaned all the information she shared otherwise. The cathedral is beautiful, ancient, with large well-preserved cloisters. Donations are welcome, and deserved. I hope to visit again when the work in progress is completed, though that did not detract in any way from my visit.

Visited whilst in the city and impressed by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the volunteers, there was renovation work happening when we we there meaning that some of the Cathedral was closed off. Loved the choir stalls, windows and in particular the cloisters, I also appreciated the lack of pressure to contribute upon entering, which actually encouraged me more to give, you simply cannot visit the city without seeing this building

Magnificant cathedral. The building has a fascinating history and I would highly recommend the guided tours to learn about it! Both the tours and entry to the cathedral are free, with no need to book ahead. This cathedral boasts the second tallest spire in the UK (with Salisbury coming in first), which is unique as it is also home to a group of falcons! The cathedral is huge - I'd recommend taking at least 1.5 hours here including a tour - and is very welcoming to people from all faiths. I am not religious but still enjoyed participating in a short prayer with the chaplain. Must see's in this cathedral include the font (which was previously used in a chocolate factory!), the small fragments of the original ceiling paintings remaining (including artwork depicting the construction of the cathedral), the pelican lectern, and the cloister (where you can see the history of the monks who lived here).

The Cathedral guides were very friendly and approachable. The guides enhanced our trip by drawing our attention to interesting aspects of the Cathedral without ever being obtrusive as we like to wonder arround at our own pace, marvelling at the architectural brilliance of the Cathedral.
The cloisters are well worth walking around whilst soaking up some winter sunshine. My favourite section was looking at the medieval carvings on the seats/supports where the Monks once worshiped.
The Cathedral is a short walk from the city centre. Entry is free with donations on the basis of how much people feel able to contribute.

Free to enter & walk around! There are plenty of really helpful & pleasant staff available to answer any questions if you prefer not to take the guided tour.
There was no sign of Budge the resident cat when we visited but we did see his little cat house ***see photo
Do look out for the grave & also the memorial to Edith Caval that is very close to the cathedral. Take the time to explore both inside & the cathedral grounds, it’s in a beautiful area of the city.

I love this cathedral. No charge to walk around and enjoy this magnificent building which has stood for over 900 years. I always find something new hidden on the walls or pillars which are steeped in history. Worth visiting for a few hours in a lovely part of Norwich.

How much time would you recommend on average to look round the cathedral without one of the tours? We can't make the tour times unfortunately.

its up to you.if you want to a cafe next door with toilets and a gift shop too.the history i would say 2 or 3 hours or even longer...i live 10 mins away go up nearly every day...theres alot of wall plaques about past people...there

Am visiting Norfolk in the summer (August) do you have to pre book the Cathedral or can you just turn up on the day?

Hi there
You do not need to book, but it is good to be flexible with your timings as we have the Dippy On Tour Exhibition in the summer, so there may well be more visitors than usual. Our website is the best place to check on opening times as in the last year they have been flexible to tie in with the Government instructions. We look forward to welcoming you in the Summer.

They do allow people to light candles at set times during the week plus they have various special remembrance services where you can also light a candle. Best to message the Cathedral in advance who can best advise,

Hi Jill. The Cathedral's normal opening hours are 7.30am - 6.00pm, though other services such as the Hostry Visitor Centre and Refectory Cafe open and close at different times. You'll find full details within the Visit section on our website. Hope that helps :-) James

Hi and thanks for your message.
Limited parking is available in the Cathedral Close for vehicles bearing an official Blue Badge. Disabled parking permits will be issued by the gatekeepers for a duration of two hours on a first-come, first-served basis.
A space is provided at the South Door for a minibus carrying disabled passengers. Minibuses must book this space in advance through the Cathedral Estates Manager (01603 218300).
