These unusual kilns are well worth a visit. However, as other reviewers have mentioned, at the moment the area is a building site. There is access to the Hoffman kiln but you need to cross the building site and walk along beside the railway. The signposting is not clear so as a result we spent a while exploring another part of the site, below the quarry, searching for the kiln.
Apparently there will eventually be a path leading from the new car park directly to the site.

Hidden away, this is a gorgeous hidden gem. A piece of history being reclaimed by nature. Would so love to do a ghost hunt there. Lol

I have visited this fascinating place a couple of years ago and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the place.
Visited again on 15th June and there is no longer any access to the car park due to building of industrial units on the adjacent site.
There was lots of work going on and I was just turned away.
The only way to see them is to park back near the main road and then take the footpath alongside the railway line and even then the site of the kilns is noisy, dusty and busy with machinery.
Hopefully, when finished, there will be a carpark for visitors to the kilns but considering the development is for small business use, I wouldn't bet on it!

Could be really nice, I wanted to go there as it looked interesting and even found where it was, only to find that the car park is closed along with the footpath and it has been turned into a building site, apparently at some time it will be accessible again but I couldn’t find out when.

A sign to it from the main road might make it more popular on the other hand a well hidden almost secret place which maybe it should stay that way.

Really loved my visit. I was amazed by how big the site is to say it isn’t promoted very well. There is lots to explore and the information boards are very helpful. The car park for the site it also quite large so there is plenty of room. It felt quite exciting to be exploring the vast Hoffmann kiln by torchlight and I was very pleased to see that it hadn’t been littered or abused. Following the marked trail ensures you don’t miss anything and the voice recordings are very interesting to hear. Highly recommended; I will be back!

An interesting place to visit, good interpretative panels which give you a good feel for the industrial archeology of the area and gives an insight into how the construction of the Settle-Carlisle Railway boosted the local economy.
It gives evidence too of how quickly nature takes over and the scars of an abandoned industry create abundant new wildlife habitats, with stalactites and different types of fern growing around the kiln and lots of bird life in the undergrowth.
It must be better still in spring and summer when there's more flowers out and more birds around the whole site.
The Hoffmann Kiln would be an ideal place to explore under cover on a rainy day, and bringing a torch would enhance the experience.

Found this industrial heritage on a walk between Stainforth and Lancliffe.
Various information boards and trails. Also some audio exhibits of interviews with past workers. Paths can be slippy if wet. There is a car park but not easy to locate - you need to go under the railway off the main road.
Highly recommended, giving an insight into the industrial heritage of the area. Walking inside the kiln chambers is impressive.

The kiln is really huge and quite well preserved, with some information provided to visitors. It is a nice place to bring children and get them interested but access is not great and it is not promoted and could be developed more

Hello,is there more than one car park?I had arranged to meet some friends to have a tour,& I totallymissed them.Where I parked,in a big car park,there was no one else apart from?a caravan.
Feel I need a map.of it.
Would I find one in the tourist office in Settle?

Hi,
I think it would be very difficult because of the terrain. The ground is very uneven inside the kiln and the rim round the outside is quite narrow. The rest of the site has steep steps to negotiate.
Sorry to be a bit negative on this aspect
