Fabulous few hours spent with Tony & Patricia in this gem of a museum. Wonderful old scientific instruments demonstrated with gusto, enthusiasm and a profound knowledge. Superb afternoon tea served by Patricia - all in all a delightful experience. A joy that it even exists.

The Tripadvisor reviews are highly positive and deservedly so. The demonstrations are entertaining, the cakes lovely and Pat and Tony are a delightful couple.
You do need to book by telephone in advance and I would suggest doing so in good time - we booked six weeks ahead and one of three possible days had already been taken. The cost was £20 pp which was very reasonable for a personal two-hour show including tea and cake. They do provide a stool for the less mobile which was appreciated.

Everything about this experience was wonderful!
Tony and his wife are warm, welcoming and genuinely friendly people. The science museum was something I never thought I would ever see. It is crammed with beautiful scientific apparatus in brass and mahogany, the most beautiful and intricate contraptions from a bygone era. Tony goes through them with a creative and polished performance that is both entertaining and educational. Halfway through the proceedings a sumptuous tea is provided and it is a lovely opportunity to chat and get to know each other better. This utterly unique experience is very highly recommended, even if science is not your thing, it is an opportunity to look through a window into another time, witness fascinating demonstrations and learn extraordinary facts.

We were greatly looking forward to our visit to the museum and we were not disappointed. A wonderful experience. Mr Swift (Tony) our guide through the science of the Victorian era was knowledgeable, thoughtful and amusing. I learned a great deal and was thoroughly entertained. The break for afternoon tea provided by Tony’s lovely wife was delightful. I can’t recommend a visit enough. When we come back to Whitby I’m sure we will visit again.

We both had a really enjoyable visit to the Victorian Museum of Science.
It is a truly unique experience and is completely exclusive to your group. My wife and I were treated to personalised a guided tour and demonstration of all the exhibits lasting two hours. The tour is conducted by Tony who is very lively and knowledgeable. There is an "Aladdin's cave of wonders" to feast your eyes on and find out lots of interesting facts.
At the interval you are treated to tea and cakes by Tony's lovely wife Pat. The whole time you are made feel most welcome and go away feeling like you have always known the couple.
This gem is new to us and we have been regular visitors to the area for a long while. A definite place for everyone to visit and based on their many Trip Advisor awards of excellence many other happy visitors agree with us.

One of the highlights of our trip to the area. Only 20 minutes from Whitby, must be prebooked. Tony put on a brilliant demonstration for us. Very informative, fascinating and a bit of fun at the end, what’s not to like?! Add in Pat’s lovely cakes in the interval and we had a very enjoyable couple of hours. Highly recommended.

It feels like an amazing secretive place that you just want to share with others.
Located in a quiet beautiful village is the wonderous museum of Victorian science.
You are treated to a private demonstration and tour of the greatest advancements in Victorian science. Tony is a very engaging and knowledgeable man and his final show stopper was magical.
Half way through the tour you get treated to lovely tea and cakes provided by Tony's wife Patricia. She was such a lovely lady.
I loved the whole experience. Even if you feel you're not interested in science you will definitely like this.

The museum is an amazing collection of scientific apparatus. A lot of it is the sort of things you may have read about but never seen, or maybe seen in a museum but never demonstrated. Some of it is designed purely for entertainment, some for educational demonstrations and some for serious scientific work. Tony’s presentation is all three of the above. After about an hour of quite heavy science and history there is a much needed tea break. Pat provides a wonderful spread of tea and cakes that rivals many hotels and tea shops in its quality.
My abiding thoughts after our morning with Tony and Pat were:- what a wonderful couple, what a great morning, but like other reviewers here on TripAdvisor, I am still thinking about the experience several days afterwards. My thoughts now are - This is a really important collection, almost certainly the best in the best in the country and quite possibly the world. Tony’s knowledge and expertise are also unique. I am certain that a young person experiencing a visit to this lab could be stimulated into new areas of research which could lead to new discoveries.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this museum with my husband. It is a real proper cabinet of curiosities and I learned loads about early experiments with radium and electricity. Tony is a wonderfully engaging lecturer and made it come alive even to some some one like me whose science knowledge is somewhat sketchy. Pat's tea was wonderful and we both enjoyed chatting to them.
The whole experience is very special and is thoroughly recommened.

When is it open

It is open by appointment only, and you need to call and book in advance. The website can be found (sorry, systems won't let me post link) easily of Googld and it says that over 16s only are allowed and that the visit is 2 hours (it is completely personal and escorted). This is a charming man and wife just sharing his collection as a pseudo-hobby, not trying to be a business or anything like that.
Relevant quote from the website:-
TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT PLEASE RING & BOOK AS EARLY AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN, PARTICULARLY DURING SUMMER MONTHS
Telephone (01947) 897440
- Please ring during evenings only -
Please note:
All enquiries to the museum must be made by telephone only - Thank you

Why are under 16s not allowed? Seems unfair, especially as it looks like a great way of educating them?

This is not your usual museum. This is a 'one to one' presentation by the owner, in a confined space surrounded by a large number of unique and often delicate instruments. Many under 16 year olds couldn't be trusted to stand and listen in often dimed light without fiddling! This is just the owner protecting his lifetime collection. I agree it's a pity about some youngsters missing an inspiration, but have been I can fully understand why the rule exists.

Hi,
My partner and I are planning a visit to Whitby in a couple of weeks. I've read that you have to book a place on the tour with a group and that 1 or 2 people can not be added to another group. Is this still the case. If it isn't how much is admission?
Thank you
