A beautiful derelict Benedictine abbey, well worth a visit plenty of parking if you drive around to the front entrance there is disabled parking . A nice cafe with great views of the harbour . If you fancy the walk up the steps from the harbour there are 199 steps

Nice walk around the ruins and the museum, although small, was interesting. Nice grounds for children and pets to play.

This is such a frequently photographed building that I thought I knew what it would be like. It was way better than that. It really is an impressive ruin, and the setting by the church and graveyard, and on top of the cliff just adds to it. We had a lovely couple of hours pottering around here and a nice sandwich lunch in the YHA cafe.

Stunning architecture lovely few hours spent in a very picturesque location. Small shop selling bram stoker's dracula merch along with other products. Whitby Abbey as inspirational in the writing of dracula apparently

We took our grandsons to Whitby Abbey as part of the pirate week. They had their pirate outfits etc at the ready to play the part. Whilst the two gentlemen undertaking the ‘show’ were very informative, and having been to the Abbey a few years ago where they were undertaking a Dracula re-enactment which was excellent, riveting and so so entertaining, fully expected to see something similar with pirates swashbuckling etc. Unfortunately, it wasn’t and we feel the venue could have made much more of the exhibition. All we were told was when we said we were here for the pirate day was “oh there is a pistol/musket demo at 11.30 and 2.30. We were told nothing about the ‘hunt’ for the secret code boxes that we could try and find and then work out the names of the ships involved!
Very poor organisation from English Heritage and poor advertising as our two grandsons were the only two dressed as pirates! Come on English Heritage if you want to sell your venue then advertise it by encouraging ideas re dressing up. Yes I know we are all in economic straits but anyone can coddle together a reasonable pirate costume!

Amazing ruins of a historical site. Wonderful views around the Abbey. Loved walking up to the Abbey from all directions.

It was great and fantastic but really creepy but I like it about Whitby Abbey! The thing is I found a spider on top of my hair and it was from the building and it was not good but I will leave a 4 star!

A wonderful day out at Whitby and Whitby Abbey. Spectacular views from the Abbey, beautiful surrounds and lovely coffee at the tea rooms. Seems to be a million steps to get up there but the open top tour bus is highly recommended. Gift shop/ museum and the old church were all very interesting.

Whitby Abbey never disappoints. Its dramatic setting up on the cliffs and beautiful ruins make for a winning combination. We also enjoyed the museum although it might have made more of St Hilda’s eminence at a time before women were excluded from decision making in the Church. You get beautiful views over the town and can enjoy reading the ancient gravestones in the Church

Had a lovely afternoon with a visit to the Abbey,such nostalgic and steeped in history to learn about the Abbey its amazing how the building has stood the test of time for so long being open to the elements,if you don't drive up and park In the car park ,you can get the tour bus from the town up to the Abbey there is a cafe and a museum at the Abbey so you need to allow enough time to enjoy your surroundings also there are a few picnic tables around if you fancy taking your own food to eat, allow 1 to 2 hours for your visit

Thanks to everyone who answered my question about the Abbey renovations.
Unfortunately, my friend has MS and is unable to walk up 199 steps and through the graveyard.
Is it still possible to drive up, if yes is there anywhere to park with a blue disabled badge, if not is it possible to drop her off and pick her up later?

Yes there is access for cars up to the Abbey and the adjacent StMary’s church where there is a good sized car park with disabled car parking spaces available.

Is it open at the moment, my friends and I are coming to Whitby on 1 March for a week, they have always wanted to see the Abbey.
Therefore, they were very disappointed to discover that the website says it is closed for renovations, but a couple of people have reviewed it on TripAdvisor this month?

Please note that Whitby Abbey will be closed until April 2019 while they carry out improvements to both our facilities and visitors experience. During this time both the abbey grounds and the museum will be closed

It’s tricky, it would be a two person job and would block the steps in places with people coming up and down,however I did see a couple of people take pushchairs up, with great difficulty I think. Sorry

They did try to sell us a guidebook but not sure if it had a red spine.

We visited a tea room at the bottom of the steps in Whitby town (there’s loads to choose from) up at the top I’m not too sure as I haven’t visited one there.
