I was told about this in a pub the evening before, I had not heard of it before. The teller was not exaggerating! As he said, it was an area of calm, just off a busy main street.
It had a lot of interesting, pre-Reformation features. The guide information was just right and not overwhelming. The guides in the church were very welcoming (which is more than they were at the Minster) and very knowledgeable.

Being a huge fan of Anne Lister and Gentleman Jack, I was determined to find the church where Anne and Ann sealed their union together. It wasn't the easiest place to find as it was right in the middle of shops. It was a quaint little church and very peaceful. Entry is free but donations are welcomed to help with the upkeep of the church. If you want to pay a visit, be sure to check opening times as I believe they are shut a few days a week. Nice little visit.

I have been using this Church for over 30 years incredible Oasis in the bustle of town.
Hidden away I often for years sit in the grounds for peace and tranquillity.
It is now always constantly closed even the grounds. Not even open on a Sunday really disappointed.It has two entrances and I often sit in the grounds when the main Church is closed.
It is open 11 am to 3pm Wed to Sat so very limited why can’t they leave the grounds open until a lot later? In all my years it never has such poor opening times. Why now? I hope they sort it out as it is a superb location and other people I know miss this little Haven.

What a find.!!!! We saw this church on trip-advisor.
We were on Goodramgate and decided to find it.
The church is beautiful and very atmospheric.You can just imagine what it was like years ago.It was a cold,drizzly day and inside the church was freezing but still staffed by lovely chatty volunteers.There are gardens/graveyard with seats around the church which I am sure would be an oasis of calm in the summer.Be patient whilst trying to find the entrance off Goodramgate.It is next to old white cottages which are now shops.Well worth a visit 👍

Very idillic little church hidden in York. Gardens are peaceful and contains a plaque for Anne Lister (LGBT York icon). Also has a cool bell. Worth the stroll when checking out Goodramgate

One of the joys of this church is how hidden it is. Accessible from 2 snickleways, it has a small churchyard, perfect for a quiet lunch, and then a lovely church itself with nice features from a number of centuries.

Tucked away behind Goodramgate (accessible via a gate on this road, or through the narrow alleyway next to Poundland), this little church is well worth a stop. Friendly volunteers are on-hand to tell you about the church which has family pews, a small chapel and is the place where Anne Lister (Gentleman Jack) and Ann Walker took communion together to seal their union. Free to enter, but welcomes donations to help towards the upkeep.

As so many others have probably said, this is a hidden gem, tucked away in a busy area but with a real air of separation and peacefulness.
Whenever we visit York we go to as many churches as we can and this one is a little gem.
The stained glass is lovely and some of it has really interesting back stories.
The outdoor benches are a real asset and the churchyard is beautiful with lovely flowers growing.

We're open Wednesday - Saturday - the website is correct. I'm afraid the leaflet is a bit out of date, as our opening hours change with the size of our volunteer team. Hope that's helpful, drop us a line if you need anything else.

Hello,
It should take you around 10 minutes to reach us on foot from the station.
The easiest route would be to turn left out of the station, cross the river, and keep walking straight on towards York Minster. When you reach the Minster, turn right onto High Petergate (look for the Guy Fawkes Inn). Keep walking straight on, and the road will become Low Petergate.
Our Low Petergate entrance is an alleyway between Poundland and L.K. Bennett.
Alternatively, our main entrance is around the corner on Goodramgate (turn left at the York Roast Co.), opposite Tesco.
We can be a little tricky to find, but it is well worth the effort!
