Having thoroughly enjoyed the Charles Rennie Mackintosh locations in Glasgow many years ago it was a delight to take our time looking around this small terraced house he dramatically transformed in 1916, appreciating the style, workmanship, flair and beauty of so many different elements. The guide notes we were given, in addition to the supplementary ones in each room, provided a detailed and fascinating account of his vision and its execution. The staff we spoke to were friendly and clearly enthusiastic about being a part of this unique preservation. The ticket price was a very reasonable £9, with the bonus that you can return for as many viewings as you like within 12 months.

Booked infor afternoon tea. Took a while to find the entrance to the tea room but eventually found it and had to ring the bell to be let in, all very unwelcoming. Tea room was very small, quite chilly , condensation running down the window and quite dark. Once seated the door was closed behind us, felt very isolated. The waitress never stayed in the room so had to wait for everything. Food was ok, good savoury scone and sandwich assortment. Bruschetta is not something I expected for afternoon tea and it was quite unpleasant. Scones and jam with cream were fine but the rest of the selection of cakes were pretty bad. The meringues tasted burnt and the blueberry muffin was awful, decorated with sickly icing, a sprinkle of sultanas, candied peel and an edible flower..felt like we were an intruder in some one’s parlour,very weird. Would not go again.

When you visit here try to have the guided tour, it is very good and makes all the difference to be taken round by an extremely knowledgeable person. Our guide knew everything there is to know and had a good sense of humour too. A most interesting visit.

A historical gem that’s a must for anyone who is a follower of brilliant design, this is a wonderful piece of later work by C.R. Mackintosh. You also get a great insight into Bassett-Lowke, his legacy of design and model making work and his wife who were CRM’s clients. Elaine, our guide, was fabulous in telling us the story of this house, it’s history and the people involved in its creation. Elaine gave my wife, daughter and myself a visit we will not forget. It’s a story that slowly unfolds as you make your journey through the house and it’s contrasting interiors.

Have been for both brunch and lunch. Food is always good. Also been for afternoon tea - great selection and option for a child’s version too.

Sunday visit to this house/museum. Combined with lunch at the attached restaurant next door.
We were the only people there and given a very information and thorough tour by a gentleman. Photography is allowed which is always welcome.
78 Derngate was famously re-modelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916 for his client, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke.
A paradise for model train and boat enthusiasts.
The work of Mackintosh was also of great interest.

Please note we did not got round 78 Derngate, this refers to the Tea rooms, I gather it is a temporary room, so this may be the problem, but the door into the room was filthy, so not a good first impression, the cups were all stained, no Camomile tea (run out) The napkins were marked, the girl who told us what we had to eat was so quick we didnt have a clue what was actually in the rolls etc , if you wanted a soft drink instead of tea, you had to pay full price, very little staff presence, no offer to refill you tea, I had a lovely time due to the company and maybe things would be better if it was the usual room, but personally I was very disappointed and will not be back again.

Do you visit this unusual place. If you do, I strongly advise you have the wonderful tour guide with you when you go round. She was really engaging, knowledgeable and friendly. If you went round by yourself it would not take very long and you would miss out on a lot of the story of the place and its contents.
The house was a lot smaller than we imagined and was less Macintosh designed but still very interesting and worth the trip. The café next door Is simple but well done. If you are into afternoon teas, they looked spectacular on the next table.

Visiting this house is an incredible experience. It has Charles Rennie Mackintosh written all over the interior decor. The rooms all roll into one remarkable work of art. Sublime and inventive. Magical. Like a delicious meal. It's a must!

Hello JoJo - the nearest car parks are all within a 5 minute walk: St John's multi-storey, Albion Place & Hazelwood Road. If you visit on a Sunday it is obviously easier to find on-street parking. Looking forward to seeing you!

Hello, I am afraid we cannot allow dogs into the house, but there is a garden and if possible your dog could perhaps be left with somebody or tied up outside (if the weather permits!)
Do you have to pay entry fee to go there for lunch if you don't want a tour?
