This is long, I walked all the way to the lock, which is just beyond the Ring Road. It is very pretty with lots to see and not a muddy path either.

The Oxford is a lovely canal with some of the most friendly live aboard residents. The locks could be a bit better maintained but compared to the Kennet and Avon they are well kept. A nice peaceful place to unwind.

Took a relaxing boat tour down the river, great way to end the trip to Oxford, guides were really knowledgeable

Needs immediate action and attention, so neglected and run down, almost impassable as a walk, virtually abandoned, no one else dares to use this canal path . We did this 5 years ago, how sad this beautiful heritage site has almost been forgotten by the management CRT.

Cycling the Tow Path
Visited late June to cycle Hayford to Oxford , very disappointed to find tow path south from Hayford very over grown . Very difficult for children and anyone other than experienced " off roaders " narrow single track with vegetation 3/ 4 ft high.
Moved on to near Kidlington where new paths just completed . Good and very enjoyable all way to Ifley Lock .

Travelled down the Qxford Canal and generally had a good opinion of this waterway until we moved south from Trupp. Many of the locks on this stretch were jammed with debris making it almost impossible to squeeze the boat out of the lock. This problem was reported to the CRT and can be rectified.
However the stretch from Dukes Lock into Oxford is another matter and it would take some concentrated effort and change by CRT to make it accepted for cruising.
There are three problems. Firstly visitor mooring are very limited and those before Aristotle Bridge are over grown with vegetation, the banks in many areas are eroded and there is very little room to secure pins. These visitor areas are unappealing and certainly should not be classified as visitor mooring.
Secondly long lengths of the tow path are designated as conservation areas. They look very similar to the visitor moorings with overgrown vegetation but unlike the visitor mooring boats cannot moor up in those areas.
Thirdly part of the canal particularily around Wovercote are designated for long term mooring this is quaint and alternative name for a shanty town, derilict boat graveyard and general dumping area. Its a disgrace and provides an awful first impression to the visitor travelling into Oxford by boat. Its my first time here and my last.
The problem seems to be that the CRT prioritise conservation and allocating long term moorings over providing enough secure and well maintained visitor moorings, visitor facilities, maintenance of canal bank structure and monitoring and policing the use of the private moorings.
To be honest the area around Wolvercote is a stain on Oxford.

Quiet and enchanting ambling along the canal on a frosty day. Interesting and alternative view of Oxford.

Walked along here from our Hotel on Wolvercote, took around an hour, enjoying the sights, sounds and life on the banks of the canal, lovely realaxing walk, just watch out for the cyclists/runners that sometimes get a bit too close before going past.

It was summer so I guess this added to the feel but we managed to have a wander alongside the canal one evening and participate in an evening canal boat ride. It was lovely to see all the individuals out on the water from the swimmers, to the paddle boarders, rowers and residents. Very relaxing

This canal has a bike and running path right next to it. I love running along this canal in the mornings.

We are renting a narrow boat in September with Oxford as our destination. You say you can't moor inside the city, but do you know if there is moorage on the outskirts? We plan on several day trips on land, so this is key! Appreciate your input, thanks a lot!

There is extensive mooring on the Oxford Canal. Much of it is residential, but I think some spots near Hythe Bridge Street seem to change over a lot. (The Canal and River Trust website has a page on Oxford Visitor Moorings that may provide more information.)
