Unfortunately, this was not the experience we expected to go on. We booked the tour on the Oxford Castle and Prison Website, which was titled 'Spectre Ghost tour' (not the Bill Spectres tour which the feedback link has led us to here). When looking to book, we had the option to book a daytime guided tour of the Castle and Prison or a evening Ghost tour of the Castle and Prison (or so we thought - as did all 7 other participants on the tour). However, we were disappointed to find that the only connection to Oxford Castle and Prison was that the meeting point was outside the gift shop and the introduction to the tour was held here. A female guide dressed in character was our host and after a 5 minute ghost story about where we stood, we were all confused to be told we would need to walk to Broad Street.
Our guide took on her role of her character excellently and worked hard to keep us entertained (our disappointment is not with her) . She remained in character the whole time, telling us ghost stories about various locations but, the necessity for audience participation, picking people to volunteer when no one really wanted to and feeling the need to react to poor jokes was too much. The 'tricks' , and outcomes of volunteer participation activities were awkward and at times a little cringeworthy. The line was drawn when several of us were made to not look whilst the others within the party were asked to knock coconut shells together to convince us ghost horses had appeared. When they were then made to 'gallop' off, led by the host, we were all made to run after them in the same way. We are a couple in our late 30s and not what we thought we would be doing on a Friday night - getting strange looks from people passing.
Whilst I don't mean to be unkind, I really felt this tour was geared towards families with young children , not families with older children/teens or adults. Since getting home I have rechecked the website and it appears to have changed since I booked as its now clear its a walking tour of the city. That is not how it appeared when we booked, and whilst perhaps it may be that we wrongly assumed what the tour would be, there were also a party of 5 and another couple booked on - all of whom ALSO thought it was a ghost tour of the Castle and Prison.
The tour was summed up well by another member of the party - it really did feel like we were on a school trip. We wanted to learn about the Castle and Prison with some spooky stories thrown in, not a ghost tour with no link to the Prison and Castle at all. If we had known, we would not have booked. At least we know for next time if we ever decide to visit Oxford Castle and Prison again, unfortunately on this trip we ran out of time.

A spooktacular tour round some of Oxford's most haunted sites. Our tour guide was excellent. All in all, very entertaining as well as informative with no gory detail spared.

School trip for students aged approx 15….WOW what a fabulous tour with excellent information, really engaging with some comedy and magic. Definitely worth booking the students loved it.

We were alongside a couple of groups (some families, groups or friends and solo guests) and there seemed to be a positive response to the whole evening event.
I am not much for jump scares but love hearing stories, so this ghost tour was perfect. Our host was friendly, fun and the added visuals he put on really added to his stories.
It is something I definitely would recommend if you are in the need for some light entertainment, however wear decent shoes as the side streets are a little uneven :)

The ghost tour was great. A wonder way to see Oxford whilst learning a little of its history to. Really good fun for adults and kids

Fantastic tour of the ghosts of Burford. Bill intrigued with tales of the ghost of Lawrence Tanfield, his harridan wife and the despicable Dunsdon brothers as well as creeping us out with some pretty impressive magic. Bill is very slick and a must see.

Bill led us around Oxford on a great tour of the city at night with stories of mysterious happenings bringing us back in time! He had some great theatrics to go along with the stories which made it very enjoyable and a little bit creepy. It was my mom, and sister and I that went and we met up with the group outside of the tourist center. He had a big sign already there so it was easy to join in. Highly recommend Bill Spectre's Oxford Ghost Trail to anyone wanting to explore Oxford at night!

Hi is this walk wheelchair friendly?

Hi, there are cobbles, kerbstones and bikes selfishly locked against railings to overcome, but many people in wheelchairs have managed. On my public tours, I would advise meeting directly outside the Visitor Information Centre on Broad Street when we arrive there at 6:50. This avoids the trip from the castle. Many thanks.

Public tours every Friday and Saturday from outside Oxford Castle Unlocked. Please arrive at 18:20 ready to leave at 18:30. All year round but please check Bill Spectre's website for latest news!

Where do you find the ghost walk?

We meet directly outside the gift shop of Oxford Castle Unlocked which is found by heading for Oxford Castle and toward the main entrance of The Malmaison Hotel (OX1 1AN). Turn right just before you get to the hotel, just past the restaurant Prezzo, and you'll see signs towards Oxford Castle Unlocked. Bill Spectre will be in his black top hat directly outside the gift shop.
