Was a bit apprehensive going to this place, as its a rural museum in a city centre, and thought parking might be an issue.
As it happens, we managed to get a car parking spot, and after speaking to the receptuonist, there was no need for a parking permit.
The museum itself is well organised, and we spent about 2hrs going around. My youngest daughter was given a tick sheet, where she had to ‘hunt’ for rats on exhibits, which kept her entertained.
Staff were really helpful.

Only a small museum but plenty to see.
Some wonderful examples of old equipment with some great explanations of their usages and specific variations.
Displays provides a range of stories about rural life and how it has changed over time and area.
A lovely little shop & café also. Staff were friendly & helpful.
Worth a Visit.

Excellent university museum. Modern displays of rural affairs & food production. Nice cosy café and friendly staff. Free entry.

Lovely museum which is well worth a two-hour visit or more. The exhibits are varied and the associated signage is excellent. I went down the left-hand side to start with to enjoy looking at and reading about the numerous artefacts and, after turning around at the end, came back on the other side and loved reading about and inspecting (hands-off!) the farm carriages etc.
The museum shop has some nice stuff and the cafe was also great - a mug of hot chocolate and a slice of ever-so-tasty fruit cake for under a fiver!
Entry to the museum is free but a £5 donation is suggested and I was happy to pay that.
Previous reviewers have commented about the friendliness of the staff - they were so right about that!

What a lovely Museum. My son lives in Reading and we have visited this museum several times. His daughter is 4 and she absolutely loved the big garden area, especially the tractor and Romany caravan with crochet toys- played for a long time and really fired her imagination.
The Museum itself is very informative and well done. I was particularly interested in Huntley and Palmers history.
We had lunch and coffee which I thought was very reasonably priced.
Staff very friendly. Would definitely recommend.

A very fine place, beautifully curated and full of fascination in its bright modern building; held the interest of the whole family. Parking easy at weekend. And the massive cinnamon bun would have kept a heavy horse going for some hours.

We came to the MERL when on holiday in the area, and spent a really interesting couple of hours wondering around. Lots to see to cater for everyone. We also had lunch in the cafe.
Wheelchair access
Good - although the door of the lift to the upper floor would not open and staff said that happens quite a bit. No drama and we were soon out. Accessible toilet was well laid out and accessible parking available in front of the museum.

A very enjoyable visit with my 5 year old grandson. He enjoyed the children's activities including hunting for the concealed furry animals while I browsed the varied displays. It was interesting to see that my childhood toys are now museum pieces!
The staff could not have been friendlier or more welcoming. A great vibe and there's more to see than you might imagine from the outside of the building.

What a gem of a place! Not the sort of place you expect to find tucked away in Reading, and much bigger than it looks from the road.
We got into the main car park, so we had no worries about parking, and then spent nearly 4 hours happily wandering through the museum.
The staff were cheerful, friendly and welcoming, and contributed to the nice atmosphere of the place.
The museum itself was fascinating, with a great collection of tools, objects, photos and artwork - we thought we’d seen everything there was to see before we found out there was an upstairs!!
The cafe is really good too - we got a very reasonably priced pot of tea for two, with plant milk, and in proper tea cups! Lovely!

Me and my sister (18 and 23) recently came here and had a wonderful time!! Although probably aimed more at children/families this is a great visit for anyone! Plenty of interactive activities, interesting facts and cool objects! A great look into history and they even have a few chickens to see in the garden! 10/10!!!!!
