We stopped off here on the way home from the Peak District and were so pleased we did. This was possibly the best part of our trip away.
The museum and parking is free but donations are gratefully received and we would suggest you do donate.
There's plenty here to interest children and adults. Even if you're not particularly interested in industrial or engineering history, I'm sure you'll find something of interest. They do focus on the steel making history of Sheffield but include other industrial and manufacturing including vintage vehicles, vintage machinery and the fabulous Don Engine. The engine is run twice daily at 12 and 2pm and is well worth catching.
The only slight negatives were the poorly designed ladies toilets and the uninspiring and fairly expensive cafe. There's other places to eat nearby.
We highly recommend this museum.

an excellent museum, volunteer curators were very helpful and friendly as were staff in the shop and the cafe.
seeing the river don engine working was a fantastic experience.

Was a great museum and glad we went and had a look while in Sheffield. Learnt so much and so did children about steel and what has happened to the city over the years.

Having seen an article about the museum on the BBC I was determined to visit on my next family visit to Sheffield. First of all its free, donations greatly received. Staff are amazingly friendly and very helpful. Plenty to see regarding the steel making heritage of Sheffield. There is plenty of interactive things for the children to do as well. We were fortunate to be there when they run the River Don engine, an amazing experience. A great visit and we will definitely go back again.

This is a splendid museum of industry in Sheffield, a little off the beaten track (but Kelham Island is always worth a visit because of some fabulous pubs in the area, like The Fat Cat). Entry to the museum is free (donations welcome), and you can take photos for non-commercial use. I've visited this place several times over the past 9 years, but it's been quite a while since my last visit. Nothing seems to have changed: The many exhibits on steel production (which is the focus) and vehicles (on the first floor) are just as detailed and clear as I remembered them, with plenty of information about. You can see some of the machines in action - including a large turbine. You can even have a glimpse into the workshop where they restore those objects for exhibition. To the back you will also find a re-creation of a typical commercial alley in old-time Sheffield. The collection of vehicles from different centuries is rather small, but interesting. If you're at all interested in industrial production processes and machines of the 20th century, by all means pay the Kelham Island Musem a visit!

Once we found our way from the cathedral, no signage and only a rough map available found this to be a very pleasant and interesting free museum.
Staff and volunteers were very helpful throughout our visit and encourage you to go to different areas.
The River Don engine is massive and able to see the 2pm demo. Used to roll steel and able to change into reverse direction very quickly. Learnt a lot about armoured plating and how thick it was on many of our warships (it was a wonder they floated and could be steered as they were so heavy).
Some beautiful tools on display all made of steel e.g. saws, planes, scissors, surgical instruments etc.
A fascinating museum but awkward to get around without a map as there were several dead ends. Well worth a visit.

This is a super place for a few hours out by yourself of which the kids. Too much here to describe, but the museum runs the full gamut of Sheffields industrial past. It also has one of the worlds biggest steam engines, certainly the biggest in the U.K. where steam power was first harnessed. Within the complex there is a nice café, and just along t’canal, are bars and eateries. It is a nice walk along the canal too, either to get to the island, or to chat with the many friendly canal boat owners, moored up there.

As in the area and a son of a steelworker I thought I would take a look at the Kelham Island museum the museum is free entry but you can make a donation if you want to.If Iam to be honest Iam not very interested in things mechanically so much of what was on offer meant nothing to me,but I did mention this to a member of staff and he tried to explain the steel making process,On a Tuesday the Don Steam engine does not run but as a group of school children were been shown around they had started the engine up for them.A special mention also goes to the staff who were very polite and as mentioned they try and make you feel very welcome.

The River Don Steam Engine is an engineering triumph, superbly kept in running order. Do go when its scheduled for a demo run. Gob smacking to see such an enormous engine running. Even better, it reverses direction from full speed one way to full speed the other way in under two seconds.
I was treated to a special birthday present to get behind the scenes with the Kelham Island experts and share in the prep before the 12 o'clock run. Terrific. You do need to book days ahead though for this.
In any case, dont miss the regular runs and your jaw will drop - Twice daily at 12noon and 2pm, Thursday-Sunday.
And after that, there's there rest of the museum to go at !

Hello apologies for the delay in responding. We would recommend for you at least a couple of hours to include the River Don Engine running at 12 & 2pm Monday - Thursday and 12, 2 and 4pm on Sundays. Or spend the day with us and try our Steam Hammer Café, plus there's also lots to see around the Kelham Island area from coffee shops and restaurants to artist studios, microbreweries and real ale pubs!
