I returned to the Coalport museum shop this week to purchase some gifts for a friend's birthday.
I’d spotted some really fantastic items made on site last time I was there - they were like these terracotta flower candle holders things, super cute! - but the shop has been rearranged??
Now it's all just the same stuff that frankly I can find in all the other museum gift shops. The things I was after has been taken off the shelves. Talk about disappointed (and a waste of time).
Can someone let me know when the unique stuff is put back on the shelves? Thanks.

Visited the China museum again today after visiting recently to a clay drop in and witnessing a demonstrator doing some China painting which I had hoped to be able to purchase. I would have thought items of this quality would have been available but when I couldn’t see any I asked staff and was told it had all been taken off sale. Curious as to why because it made a nice change from the usual museum items you see all over the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust sites of which I’m a regular visitor.

Loved it. Really interesting and informative. Architecture, pottery were well worth a visit. However the crowning glory was the knowledge and passion of the lady in the the pottery workshop who brought the whole factory and process of Coalport alive.
Thank you. I loved my visit.
Top tip. We left out car in the car park and walked to the tar tunnel, tile factory and ironbridge and then back. Lovely walk by the river and along the old railway greenway.

We had a pass for all the museums otherwise might not have paid separately. Kilns were interesting to see. We walked from Ironbridge along a disused railway less than two miles and our dog could be off lead for large sections.

Visited as we had purchased a family pass. I was expected it to be a short trip that the kids had noninterest in, how wrong I was. We parked in, paynon exit £1 per hour. Signed in and booked on for pottery session at £2 per head. We loved our session! The lead potter was a huge help and very informative.
We then did a turnoff the museum which is made of multiple rooms. The first part is china tea cups and plates. The children enjoyed looking at the design. We also had a talking tea cup, which when yiunplace on stations tells the story of a cup. This was a unique and novel idea.
My boys are rather lively but I didn't have to fear them touching things too much. Most is behind cases and e en some nits that an be touched.
We got to go inside the kilns too. Huge!
Afterwards we visited the cafe opposite. Delicious cake and lovely views.

Really interesting museum with lots of lovely exhibits showing the whole process, the working conditions, the methods for different types of china and the actual kilns. There is a long warm room where you and the kids can paint items and they show you all the moulds and how they do the finishing process. There was a lovely lady there with fabulous purple hair who showed us a lot and explained some of the stuff we weren't sure about ( we had walked from the main building straight there instead of going into the kiln where you can see more clearly the firing process) and she, and the other staff were very welcoming.

We visited this museum on the last morning of our short stay in the Ironbridge area, expecting it to be a quick visit before our journey home. How wrong we were! The Coalport China displays were beautiful - so sad that this is another skilled trade that the UK has lost. But Tracey in the workshop and another lady whose name I didn't catch, brought the whole process to life from making the china to decorating it and then firing it. I was amazed at the size of the kilns and the process of firing.
Unfortunately the Tar Tunnel was closed at this time of year but Caitlin on the reception desk described it to us with the aid of photographs. We had a really interesting morning and thoroughly enjoyed our visit especially because the staff were so enthusiastic and informative and were keen to share their knowledge with us. Excellent

Pottery was a staple industry here during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when the majestic bottle kilns on display here, were ubiquitous. This is a relatively small museum on the site of a pottery that produced exquisite porcelain and china until a move to Staffs in the early part of the 20th Century.
To be honest, I am more interested in the production of said pottery, rather than the end results. Upon entry the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and the museum is, for the most part, accessible with a platform lift up to the main gallery on the first floor (second for the American's among us). There are various items displayed in significant numbers, along with a brief history of the pottery, its owners and operations.
The more interesting aspects for me were the old workings, especially the kilns of which there are two that can be entered, with detailed explanations of their workings. Fascinating. There are other buildings too that one can wander into, again explaining how the processes work. Although still accessible for those less able bodied, note that the ground is uneven and cobbled which does make for a trip hazard.
Not very cheap at $10 a head but that's not bad for an hour or two that it will take you to linger around this museum. If you are interested in porcelain and china per se this will be well up your street, but for those of us more interested in the history of the industrial revolution etc. there is much to appreciate here too. Indeed, there is a section of the museum devoted to what it was like to live and work in a pottery town and I would personally like to see this greatly expanded as this is by far the most compelling part of the experience for me. Still, well worth your time. It has a dedicated car park with the unusual, for me, system where you enter your number plate on departure and pay for the time you have spent there. It would seem that one could just leave without paying, but they claim to check number plates automatically so doing so may mean you receive a payment request at a later date!
