Broad Gate is the only access gate left leading into the town, there is a small plaque on the wall with some information.

This the remaining historical access into and out off Ludlow. Its a reminder of its splendid past as a frontier of England in the Marches. Fine building.

I was staying in Ludlow, and as it was my first visit I wasn’t sure where I was going.
Then I came across the Broad Gate underpass. I breathed in and drove through the narrow gap, looking at the nice array of different coloured paints on the walls as I did so!

We were staying nearby and the very narrow drive through underneath this gateway was a test of nerves. Interesting building and lovely to see it retained.

Unless you are interested in fortifications, perhaps not your cup of tea. The only remaing town gate and huge. Look to the gateway at Conway for comparison. Through it from the town and turn left, you will walk along a strip of the town wall.

Such a picturesque street (save for the cars!) beautifully maintained properties from all ages.
The gate is the highlight at the bottom of the street and whilst showing it’s age, and not necessarily enhanced by adjacent development over the years, the historical value of it has not been lost.
It’s worth reading up the background and history of the gates of Ludlow as for us it made seeing it all the more interesting!

The 13th century Town Wall was added to defend Ludlow from attacks from Wales after the street plan was established. Broad Gate is the last remaining gate, seperating Broad Street and Lower Broad Street. From the south you can see the drum towers with arrow slits, but the left tower is largely hidden by an impressive regency addition. As you walk through you can see the portcullis slit, though the stonework has been damaged by lorries. Wooden posts have been added each side of the gate to restrict traffic and prevent further damage.

Broad Gate is the only remaining gate through the old city wall. This gate is from about 1270. On the south side behind the Wheatsheaf Inn "1668" you can see the 2 drum towers.Portcullis"Heavy Vertically closing gate" grooves and arrow slit under the arch. In 1824-29 Regency gothic style building was added to the top of the wall.
