We visited here on 31st March on our way home from ludlow back to Pembrokeshire and are so glad we did. An amazingly intact and preserved property with several things to see. We did the free audio guide which really adds to the experience but even without that there is enough information spread around inside and out. We were blown away by some of the original features from the 1200s still seen and used and rooms such as the grand Hall and wooden carved fireplace from 17th century were exquisitely preserved. I have to say we did ludlow castle too and knowing its history it was very limited with its information and explains absolutely nothing even about Prince Arthur. Stokesay is so much better as a Victor attraction and much more interactive and so unique. The shop staff even told us the gatehouse was lived in as recently as 10 years ago! Amazing! The gift shop had a good selection and we even sampled some mead which we bought, very friendly place would highly recommend :).

Passed it on a walk and went in, so glad we did, really lovely little castle. Doesn't take too long to look round, think we took about 45 mins (didn't use the audio guide, would have probably been longer with that). Well worth seeing.

A gorgeous little site nestled on the Welsh border run by English Heritage, luckily I'm an EH member so entrance was free otherwise it could be a bit steep for larger groups / families.
Although named a castle, it is in fact a fortified manor house. That said, it is practically complete and survived the ravages of civil war that destroyed so many castles around the country. There is an free audio tour available, which is very interesting and will take about 1.5 hours to complete. There is a decent souvenir shop at the entrance selling English Heritage fare, sweets etc.
They used to have living history displays here years ago, but I'm not sure if these take place anymore.
The cafe can get VERY busy during the high season, so don't bank on being able to use it. if like some reviewers you can't go more than an hour without a coffee - take your own. I used it with no problem - had a lovely cuppa and a huge scone (NOT SCON), with jam and cream. Staff were superb - don't believe the naysayers!
Parking - access to the site is along a very short country track off the main road to the main car park. This is quite large, but again fills very quickly during the high season. If you are not an EH member, YOU WILL NEED TO PAY FOR PARKING!
Staff - As I've always said EH staff are much more friendlier than NT staff and here is no different. I spent quite a bit of time with one of the volunteers here talking about the castle and then onto our memories of being in the Air Training Corps years ago.
Personally, I would only visit here on fine or sunny days, as I imagine it would be somewhat depressing in the wet.
Now to address what i feel are unfair negative reviews about this site:
To begin with - yes, it's NOT a Castle, but a fortified manor house, that said...WHO CARES? It's a beautiful building in beautiful surroundings - just enjoy it. Most of the people leaving bad reviews here are either moaning about the cafe, (well take a picnic idiots), or complaing that it isn't a castle! Well exercise a little intelligence and do some research before visiting - it's not rocket science. Also moaning that there isn't much for kids to do - good lord, it wasn't built to entertain children, take them to wacky warehouse and let us genuine visitors enjoy the site without screaming brats ruining it.

Tried to stop for a quick bite for lunch. Had to wait to be served whilst the cafe server finished lunch. Asked for a couple of toasted sandwiches. Server went off onto the kitchen to ask but we heard ‘No’ several times from the kitchen. It seems that you can’t get the kitchen to produce anything warm after 2pm, despite the cafe being open until 4pm.
Not exactly a warm welcome. Shan’t go back.

Really love this place. Been several times and recommended to friends visiting the area. Not a castle - the best-preserved 13th century manor house in the country, with added 17th century gatehouse. Set in beautiful countryside.
Carpark across the road, with very nice cafe at the far end.
The audio guides can be a bit frustrating - I would have preferred a printed sheet.

We were on a mini break to Ludlow and had English Heritage membership so decided to visit Stokesay Castle. Clearly not a castle but a fascinating and exciting place to visit. The staff were lovely and informative and the audio guide is an absolute must to get the most information. It’s designed like a phone and you just put it next to a particular point and it starts. Super easy. The storytelling is what English Heritage do so well. The audio guide was supposed to be someone who had lived in the house and was able to tell its story beautifully. We were so lucky to visit on a chilly but gloriously sunny day and the place just came alive. Beautiful

Stokesay Castle is one of the finest surviving fortified manor houses in England. Built in its present form in the late 13th century.
Well worth a visit althougth the car park is expensive when you only need an hour.

As I arrived Stokeshay Castle I remembered that I had visited this place once before, some several years ago. However, I learned much more from this visit, possibly because of the availability of the audio guides, which really are most informative.
We started off by visiting the medieval church which is well worth 45 minutes of anybody's time. A most interesting interior and some intriguing wall painting. The pews are of particular interest as is the baptismal font which really is very old.
The Castle, which isn't really a castle is most interesting. Owing to the wisdom of previous owners over the centuries, restoration has been sympathetic, and much of the original medieval work remains to be clearly seen.
The top of the so-called 'castle' part, (not spectacularly high) affords super views across the local countryside.
I felt that only the tea rooms let it down a bit, where service was OK but not wonderful and the soup rather poor.
But not poor enough to spoil what was a superb visit.

We have been driving past the turn to Stokesay Castle for years, and have finally visited - and realised just what a gem we have been missing.
Just off the road between Craven Arms and Ludlow and next to St John's church (also well worth a visit - small, solid and incredibly old) - the 'castle' is a manor house, surrounded by a moat and with a largish grassed area in the middle of the various buildings which, when the castle was in regular use, would have been used for keeping animals and poultry, and all manner of domestic 'chores'.
You approach the castle via a stone block (possibly old stables) with toilets, ticket purchase and gift shop. I had booked online and printed off my tickets, then presenting them for the staff to read the QR Code.
We availed ourselves of the free Audio Guide and were so pleased we had. My other half, who is tech savvy, took it in his stride. I, on the other hand, was seriously impressed; a small device, like a compact mobile phone, worn around the neck. Dotted around the site are various RFID points, which told the device where we were standing and gave us the appropriate commentary.
With so much information available via the audio tour, information boards within the rooms have been kept to a minimum, rendering them realistic and relatable. Refurbishment has been carried out sensitively and you really get a feel of what it must have been like to live here.
Caveat - due to the nature of the building, there are steep and narrow steps, low doorways; but all of these are highlighted in the audio tour. There is plenty of garden furniture within the courtyard and, a feature of the architecture means that each window has a sittable ledge of either side, rest for the frail or tired.
This really is a stunning example of medieval architecture and is in excellent custodial care with English Heritage. Well worth a visit.
After you have finished looking around, call in at the tearooms - fresh and clean, with good coffee and some lovely cakes.

The fireplace in the Solar and the Solar room itself was refashioned in the 17th Century.. as were many of the other rooms in the castle. The Gate House is also 17th Century. [citing information from the English Heritage guidebook]
is this attraction dog friendly?

We visited with our dogs but as usual my husband had to wait outside and walk around. As the floors of the castle were very rough can't quite see why although the stairs would not be suitable. However he could get to the cafe and sat on an outside table

You can take dogs within the grounds, but they can't go inside the castle.
