Originally when I had put Bath Abbey onto my itinerary, it was free entry, meaning I planned to use it as a “space filler” between sightseeing. I learned today on my visit entry now costs £6.50 per adult, with an additional charge for a tower tour.
The entry price included an Abbey floor tour & access to a small exhibition. I felt I was rushed through so I could join the tour that was about to start, which was appreciated, but I soon realised I could show myself around the abbey and view what I wanted to.
The stain glass windows are stunning.
The smaller prayer areas are open to visitors too, which I appreciated.

We bought the combined Abbey entry with Tower Tour. Although it's sad that a place of worship now has to charge, it's well worth the money and there are free informal guides taking about 30 minutes inside the Abbey. Poppy was informative, there is SO much history covering the various evolutions of the church. She recommended we also visit the new Discovery Centre downstairs and that helped us understand how the current building has changed since its early beginnings.
We had also booked the Tower Tour which was excellent, and not for the faint-hearted. Just seven of us joined Toby and his assistant Khaled. It was a fantastic work-out, climbing the 212 steep, narrow, spiral stairs and ducking under numerous doorways. Toby's quirky anecdotes were fascinating and we enjoyed the views from the various vantage points on our way up and down, including the very top of the tower. We also huddled into the very tiny loft behind the clock and tucked ourselves above the fan vaulted ceiling and in the bell chamber. A definite Must Do!

Daniel is a Bath-born local, and a knowledgeable and personable guide. He was timely for pick-up at our hotel, and we had a very fun and informative 1/2 day excursion to Stonehenge. Before departing he gave us great recommendations for restaurants and what else to see and do during our short stay.
We highly recommend both Daniel and this tour!

Just back from taking the Tower Tour. Would definitely recommend it. Cost was £15 per person. Tour itself lasts approximately an hour but the price gives you access to the Abbey all day and for the walking tour too. Our guides Francesca and Conor were brilliant. Really friendly and knowledgeable. It is a lot of steps up narrow spiral staircases but the stops are frequent, lots of history about the Abbey and the views from up top make it very worthwhile.

We did the tower tour of bath abbey and it was a great experience - really recommend! We had both Toby and Andrey as tour guides who were both enthusiastic and very knowledgable.

Vanessa( I think her name was !) the guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable about Abbey, its history and lots of interesting facts about the Abbey. I would highly recommend tagging onto any of the free tour guide slots.
The throughout creation collage displays were stunning and absolutely beautiful. New discovery area was interesting. Entrance fee very reasonable to help sustain such a beautiful community building .

We loved the Bell Tower tour! Connor and Andre were wonderful guides. It was fun for all of us (2 adults, 15 year old and 10 year old). A great view of the City and down into the Roman Baths.

Still a working church, Bath Abbey just oozes history. The stained glass windows are particularly impressive, and as well as the usual biblical figures, they also have King Alfred, St.George, and King Arthur immortalised in the glass. What is wonderful outside are the 'Ladders to Heaven' showing angels leading people upwards.

The abbey (one of the few places that's free to enter in Bath, lol) was beautiful of course. It would have been boring and exactly like every other cathedral I have seen, except for the memorials.
The unique thing about the abbey is that filling up every available space on the walls were memorials with messages and notes for various people (not necessarily buried in the abbey). They're fascinating to read!
One thing that's paid for in the Bath Abbey is the tower tour (costing 10 GBP)...I hadn't planned on doing this but had some time to kill and decided, why not?
And it was a great decision! I enjoyed the tour immensely, and not just because I got to see the inside of a clock tower and the bell chamber. The view from the top was also breathtaking, and of course, the guides were amazing as well. Loved it!

One may quibble at an entry fee to a church but Bath Abbey offers more than spiritual solace. The Abbey itself is a stunning piece of Norman Perpendicular Architecture and the exhibition in the crypt, itself a marvellous piece of architectural design, is an interesting guide to the history of the Abbey.

That will be very nice! I agree that 30 minutes (minimum) will work. Do walk around inside and out sometime while you are in Bath.

I am a Tower Tour Guide at Bath Abbey. The spiral stairs are enclosed within the Towers and being five hundred years old, they are not open tread. The stairs have been restored and are all in good condition.
You cannot see what is below you. If you are concerned, have a word with the Shop Staff who can arrange for you to see the stairs before you purchase your ticket.
