Lovely little bridge which must be ancient, with an intimidating ford adjacent. It is located near to the castle watermill. Lots of pretty houses nearby

A lovely spot to cool off during hot weather, if your kids or dogs need a splash this is just a 5 minute walk from the Dunster Water Mill. Nice spot for a picnic as well!

Worth a walk from the centre of the village. Lots of history and lovely properties in the area. We sat near the bridge and had a picnic, it was very warm and so peaceful.

This is a pretty bridge with views of the River (of course) just outside the village whose name supposedly comes from the gallows which at some point were situated nearby. I guess the view is a bit better now they are gone!

After visiting the castle, the gardens and the water-mill, we started to walk back up from the mill and noticed a lane off to the left, leading last some pretty thatched cottages, it eventually led to this very interesting bridge across the river Avill. It is known as the pack-horse bridge, and would have been the route that the wool fleeces were brought to Dunster, an important centre for the wool trade, off of the moors of Exmoor. It also has an unusual name, Gallox, apparently a reference to the nearby gallows tree in the deer park....so no venison for you tonight, buddy. The adjacent ford was in full spate when we were visiting, but by crossing the bridge proper we accessed the lovely walk the other side which eventually leads back to the castle car-park, and the back door in the wall which leads back into the quiet gardens of our excellent hotel, the Luttrell Arms.

We crossed Gallox Bridge on route to the ridge. At the same location is a ford and it did not take much immagination to stand on the bridge and think of the many horses and carts that have waded the river whilst those on foot had a dry passage. A most peaceful scene!

Charming little bridge. I guess it survived as a footbridge as the river is fordable here 2 horses going through river when we were there.

We parked In Steep car park and walked round the back of the castle to this bridge. Lovely little bridge for a photos and peoples dogs seemed to enjoy the ford

We passed by here on two evenings. A popular spot for locals to bring their dogs where the animals can romp about in the water, fetch sticks, and have general doggie fun. A good time to pause for a few moments and watch.

How do I reach it by car from Dunster High street?

Head south along the main high street passing entrances to the castle until you see mill lane which has signs for the water mill. Follow this and before you get to the cafe and mill there is a sign for the bridge which points down an alleyway. Follow the alleyway, past the car park and pink rose cottage and the bridge will appear in front of you. Enjoy!
