We walked from Swarkestone to the Trent. The first part of the towpath has been tarmacced until the cylepath divers, the rest is still a good path. Lovely walk and the boat owners are friendly. You might meet a cafe barge

The section of the canal hat we walked though was from the Anderton Lift westwards towards Barnton. Views were gorgeous and even though it was a sunday, very few people on these easily walkable flat towpaths. lots of barges though :)

Plenty of walks along this stretch of the canal. You will find cafes and pubs not far from the towpath.

Walked from Longport Bridge (Stoke on Trent) via Harecastle Tunnel South and North entrances (through Bathpool Park) to The Red Bull pub at Kidsgrove. Great walk taking in firstly Longport and it's industrial pottery and canalside heritage. Then onto Wesport Lake and it's canalside and recreational facilities - a beautiful section for all to enjoy. Beautiful lakeside walks. Then passing by the outskirts of Tunstall and Goldenhill (great redevelopment potential) leading to the South entrance of the Harecastle tunnel-fascinating entrance to the tunnel. Nice surroundings to moor. Then a lovely 2 and a half mile walk over the top of the tunnel taking in Peacock's Hay Rd, Bathpool Park & Boathouse Rd. Rejoining the Trent and Mersey canal at the North entrance at Kidsgrove. You will notice the orange colour of the canal - (iron oxide from the tunnel clay seeping into the canal water, hence it's teabag colour). Then through urban Kidsgrove, past the start of the navigation to the Macclesfield Canal and onto The Red Bull pub where we ended our journey. A extremely pleasant walk for us. Reccommend an adventure to all. Would return again.

A lovely Sunday afternoon 6.8 mile walk along the Trent and Mersey canal in the Winter sunshine. Passing through Longport and its great boatyard, passing by the Steelite and Middleport Pottery factorys. Middleport Park and Sunny Bank, a pleasant stretch of the canal. A more open winding stretch onto Festival Park, looking at the former industrial sites and the backend of Burslem and Cobridge . Festival Park home of the former Stoke Garden Festival site 1986. Waterworld, offices and the Etruria famous marina. Through Etruria Vale with its well kept gardens canalside and the Etruria industrial museum. The start of the Cauldon canal addjoing the Trent & Mersey canal. Shelton bar and lock 38 with it's canalside location and historical bottle kilns overlooking Shelton cemetery. Onto the less glamorous stretch through Stoke City Centre and onto Sideway. Underpasses under railway lines and roads experienced on this stretch. Not the most pleasant stretch to walk along in our opinion. Then onto the suborb of Trentham passing by the Britannia stadium, famous oatcake boat, Trentham lakes and the canalside homes of Trentham to the Longton Road bridge. A beautiful stretch. Great walk for all and recommended a vist of this stretch of the Trent and Mersey canal.

We did a section of the Trent and Mersey Canel whilst doing the Chesire Ring for two weeks in June. The best part was going through Harecastle Tunnel both ways.

We hired a canal boat for a week to do this trip. We had a wonderful time on the canal and the tunnel was certainly a highlight.
We loved the adventure of the tunnel. We arrived mid afternoon and were given a briefing before heading through. We decided on the other side as our turn around point. There were shenanigans completing the turn but all was done in the end!
The next morning we were in the first group out. We found the staff managing the tunnel excellent, friendly and knowledgeable. This added to the experience.
We did feel some parts of the canal needed better maintenance on the banks and silt reduction. Also many boaters commented that the locks are not as well maintained as they were once and this can make them harder to operate.
Still, a great adventure and holiday for a couple from Australia! We hope to come again and see another canal! YMMV

Spend time travelling at 4mph on a narrowboat through a contrast of industrial town to tranquil countryside abundant with wildlife. Started at sawley marina on day 1after 2hours instruction about handling the boat and going through locks. The locks are double locks as far as Burton and then single locks after that. We got as far hardacre before turning at a winding hole for the journey back. Lots of lovely canalside pubs to stop at for drinks oe evening meals. It is important to cater for at least two evening meals on board in case there are no moorings in the popular stop overs. Great way to spend a relaxing holiday

Two friendly families from Estonia, both with 3 children, went boating for a week on Midlands' canals. This is an almost entirely English hobby, we met just few people from former colonies.
Narrowboating on canals can start from Canal Cruising Company in Stone, Staffordshire. They have 18 very well kept and well equipped boats and helpful staff who will show you ropes. We came from Liverpool easily by London Midland train, walked to marina, hired 2 boats both over 18 meters long and went upstream.
Expect mostly nature, marshes, meadows, bushes and only rarely romantic 500-year-old taverns and views on castles or churches. Remember - these are not rivers, but canals made for transporting goods, flowing more through glum parts of towns of industry than through scenic habitation. But you can always moor and walk to stuff.
Boats themselves are very comfortable swimming homes and steering can be learned easily enough. Aim for good weather, rain would skim half the experience. Locks and drawbridges are actually fun for family. Have a special canal map with you - Google maps won't help at all finding a mooring spot or turn-around basin.
On our trip we found some particularly lovely spots where to stop that we can recommend on Trent&Mersey and Calden canals: Leek arm junction with aqueduct, Milton village, Stone town centre, Sandon Hall and church.
Before returning the boat the next morning have a last night at the lockside Star Pub near Canal Cruising Company's docks.
