We attended the theatre on Wednesday night, having never been here before the staff were so helpful. We spoke to a couple members of staff in order to locate our seats, one particular lady had been kind as to point us to the marble staircase to enhance our experience of the theatre. We watched The box of delights, a good way to start Christmas celebrations.

We had the most enjoyable evening at the theatre. Our daughter is 10 and it was her first experience of Shakespeare in a theatre (as opposed to outside performances). She had a fabulous time. We all look forward to returning.

With minor modifications this production contains its own very apt review. ‘…
Poor players, strutting and fretting their hour upon the stage and then heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury and signifying nothing’.
Why so harsh?
Well firstly, this production is true neither to history nor to Shakespeare. The Scottish Kings Duncan and Malcolm are presented as female and referred to as ‘Queen Duncan’ and ‘Princess Malcolm’. For consistency with this distortion, it is necessary to alter some of Shakespeare’s most famous dialogue by changing ‘he’ to ‘she’ etc. Macbeth’s brother-in-arms Banquo is also presented as female character and Prince Donaldbain becomes Princess Donaldbain. The famous ‘Porter scene’ (Act 2 Scene) has been grotesquely mangled with the introduction of lengthy new dialogue in the style of a comedy ‘skit’ that would be poor quality for an end-of-the-pier variety show at Blackpool.
Next, all of the characters in this production speak with broad Scottish accents. In the 21st century, the Elizabethan English of Shakespeare can be difficult enough to follow even when spoken by someone with the crystal clear diction of, say, Patrick Stewart. I felt so sorry for the foreign visitors in the audience, and those with less than perfect hearing, who must have struggled to follow the dialogue. This was not helped by the fact that, frequently, the actors were attempting to speak over entirely unnecessary musical accompaniment and that lines were sometimes spoken quietly with actors facing away from most of the audience. The costumes were poorly designed and looked as though they could have come from the remainder section of a charity shop. The scenery was sparse and often chaotic. So there was nothing else worth watching for those not able to follow the dialogue.
I have seen many live productions of Macbeth in provincial theatres such as the Bolton Octagon and the Manchester Royal Exchange and I have seen the film productions of Roman Polanski and the 2015 version by Justin Kurzel which is currently showing on Netflix - and I can quite honestly say that this 2023 RSC version is the most amateurish production that I have ever come across. In fact, the group that I was with decided to leave at the interval at the end of Act 3 and we were not alone. Walking back to Stratford town centre, and chatting with other early leavers, it was informative to hear the range of different reasons given.
There was one moment of unintentional humour though. At the end of Act I scene 5 Lady Macbeth burns Macbeth’s letter. At the beginning of scene 6, whilst the auditorium is still filled with the acrid smell of burning paper, ‘Queen’ Duncan speaks the immortal lines ‘…This castle has a pleasant seat; the air nimbly and sweetly recommends itself unto our gentle senses…’.

We saw Macbeth here. Got tickets early, had great seats. Production was creative and very good, the theater is smallish and much like theaters of Shakespeare's day. Great night out.

We watched the recent performance of Macbeth, the woke version!
So many unnecessary changes within the play and a completely unfunny
scene with the porter doing stand up 'comedy.' Scottish accents were difficult to understand at times and the first half was far too long.We noticed that many people did not return to their seats after the interval.
Certainly would not recommend.

The theatre itself and the staff are great. The play, not so.
A few characters stood out, and these were the most experienced actors. The rest mumbled or spoke so badly we missed what they were saying and thus the importance of their speeches.
Also Macbeth was a weak character, and not as in the real Shakespeare.
This play was not for anyone who loves Shakespeare's words, it was just a mishmash of wokeness and bad choices.

We visited the theatre to watch a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Macbeth.
We were not disappointed!
From the time we arrived at the theatre to the time we left our experience was nothing short of excellent. Every single member of staff we encountered were welcoming, friendly and above all courteous.
The facilities at the theatre were exceptional. With great attention paid to accessibility and cleanliness.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend a visit to anyone interested in Shakespeare or the theatre in general.

This theatre is dedicated to Stratford's renowned, William Shakespeare. It is situated beside the Canal Basin along the scenic River Avon.
The theatre is open for free public access as well as guided tours for 13.50. We opted to wander and explore on our own.
Going up to the tower requires a volunteer to be present for the duration of your time at the top. The enclosed tower provides phenomenal views of Stratford!
Take the time to walk through the costume exhibit and enjoy the elaborate displays of custom made period pieces.
There's a lot of other things to see around the theatre; murals, stained glass windows, sculptures and more! The more you explore, the more you will see. It's all fun!

This play was advertised by RSC Stratford as “Macbeth by William Shakespeare”, but it would be better described as multi-media style entertainment mash-up package loosely based on a Scottish Story by William Shakespeare.
What went wrong:
• There was no warning that this would be a loose interpretation of Macbeth rather than the play as written by William Shakespeare
• Several of the many characters were gender (or sex?) reversed: e.g. Queen Duncan, Lady Banquo, Princess Malcolm.
• Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as weak and Lady Macbeth at strong. This production showed them in reversed roles.
• Scenes were rewritten, with additions, deletions, and changes to both the text and characters.
• Electronic gizmos appeared on stage at random for no apparent reason.
• A standup comedienne (complete with microphone) was allowed to take over the stage.
• Background “music” was the norm, never mind that it drowned out the actors’ words.
• The actors’ diction and enunciation were often poor (probably by director’s orders). Speaking in strange voices or gabbling their lines is not acceptable when the audience lose the words. The cauldron scene was the worst.
• I saw no function for the knee-high spotlights (2 or 3 of them) shining across the stage and out into the stalls. Are they deliberately intended to dazzle the audience and stop them seeing the debacle on stage. (Evidence: try sitting in stalls K30).
• The worst was saved until last. The fight between Macbeth and Macduff was dire. They took it in turn to share a single dagger and subdue their opponent. Then they threw the dagger away and started again. After an interminable period, they simply rolled around the stage before Macduff dragged a very much alive Macbeth off stage. This scene had no resemblance to Shakespeare’s play.
• The final scene was fabricated for this production. Various people proclaimed “You are Scotland” to a seemingly stage-struck Princess Malcolm.
• There were many school pupils in the audience. I hope they do not write up this event as part of their study of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. They would need extremely understanding markers.
• I think RSC should urgently contact environmental authorities. Judging by the number of dead birds which fell at random onto the stage, there is a bad case of bird flu in the RSC roof.
• I did carefully study the programme but I failed to find any explanations or justifications for the deviations from Shakespeare’s text.
My friend and I strongly disliked the production. The gentleman seated next to me (K31) disputed that I could dislike the performance more than he did. Customers booking to see a Shakespeare play expect to see a Shakespeare play, not a director’s ego-trip such as this this production. I would have no complaint if it had been advertised as such, and staged in The Other Place. I heard from another friend that audiences at RSC Stratford are being similarly treated to a modern production of As You Like It, again without warning. Shame on RSC Stratford.
I have seen two productions of Macbeth at RSC Stratford. The 1974 production (with Helen Mirren as Lady Macbeth) is one of my most memorable theatre experience. This 2023 production is my worst.

We booked a behind the scenes tour, although I had to talk my husband into it. The guides were great full of interesting information, we didn't get to see inside the theatre as they had things going on, but what we did see was very interesting. My husband commented after he was glad I talked him into it. In the evening we saw MacBeth, we decided to go with open minds after reading some reviews, and actually enjoyed the performance.

Doing a trip to London in April 2019 and can’t decide between just doing a day trip to Stratford upon Avon or spending a night there to see a play at RSC. Would have to return to London next day. Husband hates changing hotels for just one night but likes idea of seeing play. We will not have car so will rely on bus or train or tour company. Ideas?

To see a Shakespeare play at Stratford-on-Avon has alway been on my bucket list so chose Romeo and Juliet (because I knew the story). A visit to the RSC was a real experience, would be well worth a visit for you from London. We stayed overnight in the Macdonald's Swan Nest Hotel which was literally 5minutes walk away from the theatre. We had a lovely room with good facilities, the hotel had nice restaurant and bar and it was very near the town where Shakespeare's birthplace is. Have a great stay in the UK.

Been to a few productions in the past and been crippled by the lack of space. Have got gift vouchers so fortunately we can choose to sit anywhere, which means too much choice!
