As a family of 3 living quite locally we've enjoyed many visits to the beautiful grounds at Temple Newsam over the past 20 years, at all times of the year. We've enjoyed many happy times when our son was young with his scooter/bike/kite/football etc & now he's grown up my husband & I still enjoy many walks round the lakes, walled garden, greenhouse, laburnum archways & especially the rhododendron walk in it's flowering time, it's a beautiful, spacious place to visit for free & get back to nature, designed in part by Capability Brown like the Chatsworth grounds ( until the small parking charge starts.) We usually have a light lunch in the cafe, we booked the Christmas lunch for the 1st time in December in the Lady Hartford suite which was excellent quality & real value for money, the staff were wonderful too, we'll definitely book again ! We were all given a voucher after the meal for buy 1 get 1 free on a house tour for January only so my husband & I decided to try it as in all the times we've been to Temple Newsam we've never been inside the house ! We visited yesterday, Sun 19th Jan for the 12 noon tour with our buy 1 get 1 free voucher so it only cost us £9.50 for the 2 of us instead of each. Our tour was led by Julie who was excellent, she told us lots of information about the building of the house, it's various owners over the years including royal connections & Lord Darnley, husband of Mary Queen of Scots, how various owners altered the house & she was very happy to answer questions as we went round. The top floor wasn't open yet but there was loads to see on the ground & 1st floors, the great hall, dining room, Chinese room, library, crimson bedroom, blue bedroom, long gallery, grand staircase etc. There were lots of paintings everywhere ranging in style from Tudor to Stuart, Georgian & Victorian. The Chippendale desk & furniture in the library were so interesting to see as was hearing about how the Chinese bird wallpaper was made & we were amazed by the silver wine cooler & it's value ! The house is genuinely full of treasures & is well worth seeing. Julie also told us about the servants back in the day & their lives, we never knew there were tunnels under the courtyard & secret doors so the house owners didn't get disturbed by the staff ! Overall we really enjoyed our tour, it was supposed to last about an hour but it was about an hour & 20 minutes as some people were a bit late so Julie had to repeat the start. We would definitely recommend the house tour, there is a lift if you need it, apparently in Feb the full tour restarts, including the top floor, thank you Julie for an interesting & informative visit, another lovely memory of Temple Newsam for us.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit round the house. I was so pleased to speak over the phone before booking to a helpful informative official about how we could make the most of our planned visit and tour of the house. Once we had arrived and parked ( free) the guide, Caroline, gave us excellent information about its history, the many artefacts and of the people who had lived there. We look forward to returning in better weather both to see the farm and to explore the grounds.

I loved Temple Newsam House and had an amazing tour around the place! Thank you very much, the Newsam guide, you gave a deep insight into the House history, design and many interesting stories of the people once living there. Its definitely worth seeing. Even the garden and the area have its sad gloomy charms this time of the year. Hope to come there again some time in summer.

Northern Lights experience. A pleasant walk but nothing more than an average lights experience. All very nice but the bench mark has been set higher by other locations I've been to at Stockeld Park and further afield, Sewerby Hall. Poor value for the experience of walking the trail and nothing else included for kids, particularly bad when compared to Stockeld. Limited paid for attractions and expensive anyway, as was the food and drink. 10 quid for a hot dog and 6.75 for a cup of mulled wine a bit over the top. Not impressed with the parking either. The first to arrive were sent to the furthest away parking areas.
We wouldnt go again next year.

We went to the Northern lights event. We did this about 3 years ago and it was lovely- magical - perfect.
This year it was lowest common denominator commercial money grabbing shoddy tasteless. So disappointed.
A fairground and wands n swords both brighter than anything else. Plus more ways to get your family to ask for more! Terrible food trucks and lots of them. Generators n wires not hiddened. Random security guards who looked like bouncers. The crew caravan area - no attempt to hide it - rather it’s in full display next to the last set of lights. The terrible music, the over use of dry ice. The whole thing lacked style and taste. So disappointed

Good points
The lights were fantastic.
Being able to borrow a free manual wheelchair for my child.
A god selection of food stalls.
Bad Points
1. Lack of signage - no signs from car park (we used disabled parking) to the entrance.
2. Paid for parking but this wasn't being checked & no one to check eligibility for disabled parking so both could have easily been abused.
3. Lack of knowledge regarding accessibility (I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user, as is my child & we were both using wheelchairs) - 1 member of staff was trying to help by taking us a different way in "to avoid the cobbles" (which there were none on the main route in) but when I pointed out the stairs, "he'd not thought about that".
4. Paths were wet & muddy, which often made it very difficult for my electric wheelchair to stay on the path & had I been alone, I would have ended up stranded, tipping out or stuck in mud.
I know staff can't help the weather but more could have been done to ensure easier access for wheelchair users.
5. There was plastic matting on the grass to enable visitors to take photos & wander through some of the light displays but sadly these are inaccessible as there was a curb up to the grassed areas. This also meant that the "photos frames" were also inaccessible to wheelchair users.
6. We stopped at the halfway bar for a hot chocolate & marshmallows to roast. We got 4 drinks & 4 lots of marshmallows at a cost of £39. Sadly the hot chocolates were tasteless & watery. Turns out this was human error because staff hadn't bothered to stir them properly & all the chocolate was at the bottom. We only discovered this because we had to throw them away because they weren't drinkable & by this time the bar had closed - money wasted.
7. It took us much longer to get round because of the terrain & having 2 people in wheelchairs. This meant we ended up being the last ones out & being followed round the 2nd half by a group of staff only a few feet away made us feel very uncomfortable & like we had to rush round.
We didn't take an excessive amount of time taking photos so could only put the time down to being wheelchair user.
This unease was then added to when we spoke to a member of staff who was quite indignant over the amount of time we'd taken to get round, stating, "no one should take 2 hours to get round", again making us feel very uncomfortable & not a great way to end what had been an enjoyable night.

We visited tonight (27th December) having won tickets in a Sky vip ballot so only had to pay for parking at a cost of £4.50, which is ok but no -one checked our tickets so we needn’t have bothered.
The light show itself is great, we really enjoyed it and it wasn’t overly busy, possibly due to the very foggy weather but that made it pleasant to walk around. I’m not sure we would’ve paid almost £20 each for the light show although there was a few fairground rides at extra cost, food stalls and drinks places, which apart from a couple of Baileys lattes at £6.00 each, we didn’t bother with.
Our experience was soured by the complete lack of directions or signs for the car parks. We followed lots of people into the experience but when we left, we walked around for an hour looking for where our car was parked. We did ask a member of staff for help but he was very unhelpful telling us there were 3 car parks. We eventually asked someone who was visiting and she pointed us in the right direction.
Had there been signs pointing to named car parks we’d have found our one much quicker. Also, it’s very muddy, which can’t be helped but just be aware that wellies and a change of shoes in your car might be helpful.
I think this could be a very expensive experience if you take a couple of kids with you; a family ticket is almost £60.00 then if your kids want marshmallows to toast, a fairground ride or two and a hot dog or burger, you’d get no change out of £100.

Northern Lights Leeds is a delightful experience, showcasing a variety of lights and unique visuals that captivate younger children (under 10 especially). While older kids might not find it as engaging, the 1.5-hour walk-through is enhanced by the foggy weather, adding a magical, Christmassy touch. It’s a bit overpriced for what’s on offer, but the overall charm and creativity make it worth the visit. A solid 4 stars!

Temple Newsome Northern Lights terribly disappointed with the organisers who didn't cater for the Disabled, or Elders. No near house parking , Mobility Scooters told to use cobbled access, drive over metal plates not secure or level. Told to drive over grass totally irresponsible.

The Northern lights trail was actually amazing. Bigger trail than I expected and lots of different illuminations and sound tracks to boot.
However, I have to say that they let far too many people in. We were shuffling around pretty much the whole way with no space between families.
We had a timed entry- but I dont think anyone paid any attention to the timings booked.
They also funnel you in through the eating area- when then could just have easily cut the corner off and put us straight through the main farm entrance side avoiding some of the crush of people.
I was really annoyed with the lack of a consistent message on directions. The website and the booking email differed. Basically the website is right. You can not access the event from Colton Rd- although you will exit that way.
I paid for parking as stipulated and like others have stated- there didnt seem to be any point in that as no one was arround to check - in fact the complete lack of parking attendance let me and a whole host of other cars to drive up a deadend private pathway. We were sent right round the back from temple newsam road and no attendance on hand to really direct us. Bare in mind its dark as well so was really difficult to find where we were supposed to go.
Suggestion here- that you have more staff manning the car parks and better signage around it for when you are sending the cars off to other over flow areas and commuinicate with each other.
Plenty of food stalls and drinks carts, Prices I saw from £8-50 to £12-50 for burgers, chicken. So not cheap but about on a par these days with others.
The marshmallow roasting looked fun- but the kiosk was way too busy to bother with unfortunately. If there had been purely a stand just selling the marshmallows on a stick it might have been easier.
If the parking had of been better and the number of people in attendance reduced then as a light trail goes it does get 5 out of 5- but for my overall experience this night is a 3. And I probably wouldn't bother again.
Merry Christmas

Can you still gain access to the disabled carpark right next to the house (the small car park area next to some of the House doors)? How do you gain access? The gate is always closed. Is it free to park in the House carpark with a disabled blue badge? I am not referring to the other carparks near the running track or Go Ape.
