My relationship with Windsor goes right back to my youth. Visiting Windsor Castle getting right up to the entrance and felling took chicken to go inside even though someone had paid for the ticket to go on a tour. I returned to Windsor later that year to attend the Windsor Free Festival in 1972. These visits to Windsor were made by train walking the the town. But after walking this summer along the Thames from Erith Kent to Kingston Surrey. I have come to the conclusion that Britain with it's thousands of years of history can only be properly viewed by boats because so many of it's national treasures are best viewed by traveling by river. In the case of Windsor Castle not only is the river view superb but also you get into perspective the sense of a fortress on a hill above the town. Indeed as you walk around Windsor Castle the town is surrounding it in every direction as you walk into town from the river Thames. On my quest this summer I not only realized that the river Thames is the heartbeat of London but as this Indian summer is ending I wanted to get to the furthest point inland that I could take a river cruise on the Thames. From Tilbery to Windsor is 67 miles inland from the sea. So I booked a two hour cruise from Windsor to Maidenhead with a delightful creamed tea hamper to enjoy halfway through the cruise on a glorious sunny Saturday the 16th of September with the French Brothers river cruise. It just doesn't get any better than this. All summer I have shunted around the river Thames around London on the Uber Clipper River taxis. Although they are cheap and very convenient the magic of the river speaks for itself but there is no guided tour like on the French Brothers cruise in Windsor. Something happens if you allow yourself to relax whenever you cruise along the magical Thames river. It's like a kind of quantum physics where the past starts to speak to you life a symphony. It's everywhere in the buildings built along the rivers edge, the nature and the mighty river itself embraces you like a loving mother. The rest of the world seems to float away once you have surrendered to the river and just enjoy your journey along it. The French Brothers staff were delightful to be with and very accommodating to the passengers on the river cruise. I had imagined that perhaps the river Thames wouldn't feel so mighty at Windsor being so far inland but I was fascinated by every word the captain said on the cruise and the partially pre-recorded narrative. The captain of the boat and the tour were given by two people sharing the same namesake Cameron. I worked myself as a tour guide in London and brought along with me a former tour guide that worked with me. We were impressed by the French Brothers staffs not only grasp of history but also their feeling for the river like it's a living entity. Something so warm and affectionate about people that have lived their lives working on the river sharing their insights to their daily lives a living history that jumps out of the books and suddenly becomes real! Like the captain explained many river enigmas to me about how to travel further inland on the Thames as it becomes more shallow. The locks are used to keep the water level high enough to travel further inland but if you were to try and travel by boat from Windsor to Oxford it would take two days to navigate through all the locks along the way. When mills were built along the Thames with waterwheels locks were installed to give free travel to all wishing to travel along the river, no one had the right to impead river travel and although there is a Thames flood barrier at Woolwich nearer the sea. The locks along the Thames further inland can also control flooding in the regional areas too. Cruising along the Thames near Windsor you soon realize that Eaton isn't very far away from Windsor. And the famous step and bench by the river bed where the Eaton boys went swimming in the river. See all of this suddenly becomes all the more real on the cruise as we depart from Windsor by boat. I was truly impressed when we passed Bray Film Studios made famous by the Hammer House of Horror. As a child I was scared out of my mind watching those films like "Brides of Dracula" with Christopher Lee. Half a Sixpence musical was partially filmed there too and many, many famous film made just down the river from Windsor Castle. Also closeby was the "Ricky Tick" rhythm and blues club. Where Jimi Hendrix performed one of his earliest if not first gig in England with the newly formed Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1967. The Who and the Rolling Stones played there too. 2000 years screams at you there as you travel along the river and you are in good hands as the Captain not only skillfully navigates your journey but gives you a real feeling for the area. It's an experience good enough to make you love England forever. I am reading two books written about the Thames history after this delightful river cruise because the taste of the local history has wet my whistle. Traveling as I did that Saturday afternoon gave me the full picture about how everyone from paupers to the great and the good have traveled along the river at Windsor and enjoyed its delights. King George VI liked to have tea in the beautiful lawns along this beautiful river. I am not in a position to interpret the vast historical context of everything I saw with further study.
But what the French Brothers company has achieved in the Windsor are should be recreated in London too. Getting local people and boatsman to tell their living history of the great river Thames. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the tour.

We were staying in a hotel in Maidenhead and decided to book a river tour down to Windsor . Our pickup point was an 8 minute walk along the river bank from our hotel. The boat was on time and the two crew were very friendly and helpful . There was commentary along the route at various points of interest with the skipper putting his one comments in where necessary. We were offered hot and cold drinks during our trip down to Windsor and also on our return trip 4 hours later . Book online and you save £8 for two Oaps.

The best thing about this boat trip was the weather which thankfully was glorious. We booked a 40 minute trip from Windsor. No safety briefing as there was no commentary available downstairs on the boat…speakers were not working and the “Captain” was well aware of this but feigned ignorance when questioned. We did expect to see several landmarks along the way but because of lack of commentary we saw little except trees…as we were travelling with visitors from Canada this was disappointing. The view of the Castle is beautiful on the way back but can be seen from lots of places around the town.
When we questioned the lack of commentary back in the office the girls were lovely but when they asked about a refund a very aggressive ‘gentleman’ advised us he had no idea of the problem and we would have to take the matter up with their head office…we did and after several days of waiting received half our money back. Such a shame as it was a disappointing start to our trip to Windsor.

2 hours of mostly trees!
Thought we’d see some historic places, if you have binoculars you might see them!
If you want a relaxing trip then yes, it’s nice.
If you are doing it to see places of interest it’s a Bit disappointing really!
The 45 minute trip maybe better?

We were looking forward to a nice afternoon on the river but it was so uncomfortable that it took away any pleasure. The seating is hard and you are very squashed together. In fact if you look at the photos it is actually impossible to sit comfortably. The boat initially went the wrong way (I know) and then the commentary broke. So it was left to the driver who clearly wasn’t in his comfort zone. ‘The crown estate grow veg which you can buy in the shop’ was a particular highlight. The bar only takes cash which we were not made aware of before boarding. It was a lovely day which made up slightly for the disappointment

We did a family trip on the 40 minute round trip from Windsor promenade. Booking was easy online but it is first come first served with no allocated seats on the day. We went on the first trip of the day so there was room. There was no commentary but you were provided with an informative leaflet. The biggest issue for was the uncomfortable seating on the upper deck. The seats were plastic school type chairs that were too close together. The 40 minutes went too quickly as well but would like to try the 2 hour trip. All in all reasonable value for money with the highlight being the view of the castle on the way back.

Charming low key 45 minutes round trip from Runnymeade. Access at the Boathouse is easier than at the Pleasure Grounds.
