We spent a week traveling on the Llangollen Canal. The countryside was quaint and the Pontcysyllte & the Chirk aqueducts were breath-taking. We were fortunate and good weather during our time on the canal. The people were always friendly in the towns and pubs along the way.

Really nice walk along the canal, it’s about 2 miles from joining the canal in the town where the boat trips are to the horseshoe falls and then obviously 2 miles back again! But it’s straight forward and flat with lots to see along the way.
Recommend walking boots if it’s been raining a bit as lots of puddles can form.
Lots of lovely spots for scenic photos.

Having planned a retirement visit here on our narrowboat for the past 19 years we at last have made it. We were not disappointed. It is a beautiful canal and there are some stunning views and scenery. Strongly recommend a visit

Dubbed Britains most beautiful canal and certainly doesn’t disappoint. Aqueducts, tunnels and areas of outstanding beauty. Spent a marvellous week cruising and sad to return. Big thanks to AngloWelsh cruisers who hired us the boat (not cheap) but wonderful staff, ease of booking and a well presented clean “Osney” weir class. Slight downside, novice boats/holiday makers passing at speed, it’s tickover only when passing guys, day hirers crashing and you’re allowed to travel over a couple of miles before turning round and round. Oh and try to pass on the right as instructed!

We were visiting the canal with Rail Discoveries(19.9-24.9.22).
After lunch we rode on the horse drawn canal boat,very preaceful and relaxing!

A beautiful varied canal, scenic, serene, busy and energetic at the same time. An excellent base for a narrowboat holiday, a day cruise, canoeing, walking, cycling and many other outdoor activities.

Starting from its source at the Horseshoe falls west of Llangollen the canal travels east through Llangollen, Chirk, Ellesmere and Whitchurch. The section from Chirk Bank to Llangollen is particularly spectacular incorporating the two stunning aqueducts and Chirk tunnel and although tree lined and shady most of the time, there are sections that afford great views of the Dee Valley.
If you are staying in Llangollen then it is recommended to walk this section and a good day out is to take the aqueduct canal boat trip run by Llangollen Wharf ( has its own Trip Advisor listing ) , lunch in one of the pubs or cafes in Trevor and then the two hour walk back along the canal to Llangollen. Alternatively you can get local busses to Trevor or Chirk ( an extra 30 minutes back along the canal. ) or if you like a good walk then along the canal to Froncysyllte and then the public footpath via Pen-y Craig quarry and Croes yr Escob back to Llangollen ( 10 miles in total).
I can thoroughly recommend the boat trips run by Llangollen Wharf but if you want to enthuse about them too, best to do it on the proper Trip advisor listing for Llangollen Wharf boat trips.

Fabulous trip with excellent cream tea. Staff very polite and efficient. Covid restrictions very well organised. Only down side was the coach drop off point did not indicate where we were.

Beautiful afternoon tea, freshly made sandwiches, scones and cakes, followed by a relaxing horse drawn canal trip.

Worth it just for a walk across the canal aqueduct. Called off here after a day in Portmeirion just to see the famous aqueduct. There were no boat trips due to covid but you can walk across on foot. Bit hard to keep social distance but everyone very courteous when passing others. Not for those who don't like heights and it's a weird feeling when you cross over the river below. The view of the setting sun was beautiful. A boat trip would be great I'm sure but even on foot it's worth a detour.

It’s part of the canal, so I see no reason for it to close? I would be very surprised if it ever closes. There are no gates at either end so once again I can’t see how they could close it.

The central carpark is only a 5 minute walk to the canal via the bridge, and seems to be less congested than some of the other parking areas.

Hi, we are due to take our first week's holiday on a canal boat on this canal and wondered if you had any tips on good places to stop at for either walks, lunch or dinner.

We are going from Ellesmere soon and hope to get to Llangollen and back in 3 days, is this possible do you think?

Don't know if you have already been, but yes you can get there and back in 3 days, we got to to hindford on the first day, started out at 8 second day, got to the aqueduct and over it early pm, pushed upto Llangollen and moored by 5, started back on the 3rd day and took it easy stopped at most of the pubs, back to ellesmere on the Thursday night moored there and into the wharfe on time. You need to plan and take note of local knowledge. ........hope that's useful
