The National Trust has cleverly set up the tour at Erddig to have the visitor begin in the Servant's hall, then make one's way through the house. I found the obvious appreciation of the servants who had been employed here, to be quite fascinating. There are large photographs of many of the servants featured from over the years, with clever clips written by a past owner of the house.
The house tour doesn't begin until after noon, so keep that in mind when making plans to visit.

Erddig is a large Stately House owned by the National Trust situated on an extensive estate near Wrexham. Its history dates back to the 17th century and it was saved from dereliction in the 1970s. You can visit the house and/or the gardens. The day we visited the house wasn’t open until 12.30pm – so we started with a visit to the restaurant. There is a reasonably extensive choice of hot/cold meals you can choose from. On this occasion we tried the cheese and ham toastie which was hot and tasty and reasonably good value for money. The staff were friendly and the tables were cleared and wiped down very regularly. By the time we had finished our lunch the house was open to visitors. It has carefully preserved rooms on several floors with the original furniture. The Neo-classical interiors includes an example of Chinese wallpaper and a chapel with late 18th century fittings. Erdigg reflects the lifestyles of all of its occupants, both family and servants. There are many photographs and information concerning the servants who have worked at the house during its life in the lower level of the house. The volunteer guides are friendly, helpful and well informed. The grounds are extensive and there are various walks to do depending on how energetic you feel! There are meadows, lakes, ponds, trees, woodland and ducks and geese. We spent some time just sitting in the tranquil garden. We also took a wander through the Wolf’s Den natural play area which seemed to be enjoyed by the younger visitors. Finally we ended up back in the courtyard and tried the ice cream from the Parlour. I had a lovely tub of rum and raisin ice cream sitting in the sunshine. There is plenty of parking which is not too far from the entrance. A very pleasant way of spending 3 to 4 hours.

Outstanding volunteers in the house whose knowledge and friendliness really made the house and its people come alive. 5+ stars. Lovely gardens and walks round the estate too.
Big disappointment in the restaurant however. We had coffee and sandwiches which were totally inedible. The bread and fillings were dried up and awful. We complained to the manager who turned out to be an absolute star. He said there had been many previous complaints about this and was down to the wrapper they now had to use for the sandwiches which was no more than just a bit of brown paper. He showed us that this was very loose fitting and was not capable of being totally sealed. As a consequence the sandwiches were effectively sitting in the open air and even though they had been made fresh that morning did not retain freshness, particularly in warmer weather. He apologised profusely , refunded their cost and offered us complimentary cakes instead. Absolutely star customer service from a very caring individual.
I guess this is all down to the now well established woke determination from NT management who are more concerned with virtue signalling their ECO credentials by using cheap ( but recylable) brown paper wrapping than using the sealed plastic wrappers used successfully elsewhere which guarantee freshness. Unfortunately its the local staff who have to deal with the problems created by mangement ignorance.

House, gardens and parkland to explore. Some lovely walks and the usual food at the café. Was very busy but enough space for it not to feel too crowded

Great that parking is free! Makes a change and was a nice surprise. Paid £37.50 for a family of 4, which gained access to the house too. The gardens are stunning and the house steeped in history, which was interesting. But it was busy, so not that leisurely. There are 4 walks available too. Red, orange, green and purple. We chose the red route, which was pleasant and the longest route. Good to have a choice of different length, signed routes. Would have been better if there was a woodland park for the kids. The wolf area for kids was a bit disappointing and just had two swings, which you had to queue for to have one go and let someone else on. But we had a good few hours here and was worth the visit.

Like so many National Trust sites it says they are dog friendly and you can indeed explore the far out grounds. However, having children and a dog we have found that National Trust sites are inaccessible. At Erddig you cannot even access anywhere near the play area with a dog to allow children to go in and play. I understand the need to keep the gardens nice and would never expect to let our dog off lead at a NT site but I even offered to carry and hold my small dog in order to take my children to Wolf den. The only place we could access is the peripheral walks. We often stop on journeys for a break with our children and dog and have now decided to cancel membership because the sites are inaccessible for a family with a dog. Very unsure how NT can claim they are dog friendly by putting out a water bowl and having a waste bin. The main site is not dog friendly at all and yet small changes like a designated dog path or alternative access to the play area would allow a family to spend sometime here. Would prefer NT to be honest and say unsuitable for family and dog.

The house was magnificent beautiful well kept gardens the restaurant food was first class all the staff were knowable and extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them.Sharon in the ticket office went that extra mile also another lady came running outside to help when my husbands scooter had a problem. Thank you so much for a perfect day out.

Was in the area for a few hours and decided to pop here, so glad we did,great outdoor place, gardens,walks etc, didn’t go into the house but we only live in Chester so will definitely come back, excellent food and great value in the cafe too!

We really love this place, wandering around the estate. There are so many little things to find and explore, we particularly like hanging out in the walled garden and enjoying the tranquillity.
We’ve been there a few times recently, either with extended family (1, 4 and 5 year olds) or as a couple and have always enjoyed our stay. We really enjoyed the easter activities they put on.
Our favourite of all though is their apple festival in autumn, the smell of the stables with all those apples in it is something to behold.

Coming here has made us decide that we wanted to join the national trust and go to more places.
With it being on the doorstep and us never going before, when we did it was fantastic.
Absolutely stunning place to go, beautiful gardens and every member of staff was lovely.

In the grounds, on leads, only. Assistance dogs are allowed everywhere, of course.
Do you have to walk round the house as part of a timed tour or are you free to walk round the house at your own leisure

Yes - Erddig very organized re parking... There is an area set aside for parking large vehicles.

Are dogs allowed in the gardens please?

Hi Penelope,
We don't allow dogs in our Grade I listed garden sorry, but we do allow dogs on leads on the wider 1,200-acre estate. They are allowed through the ticket office and Timber Yard to the tea garden and Midden Yard too. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the property. Full details are available on our website.
