Avoid the Castle if you are with a dog.
Dogs are not allowed in most areas of the castle or grounds. That is OK. There are great dog walks around Cave Hill Country Park. The castle claims it has a "dog friendly" out door seating area next to the cafe. Remember that you are paying full cafe prices for the privilege of using the "dog friendly" seating area.
The area is filthy. It is the smoking area for the castle. The floor is littered with cigarette ends. The cigarette boxes are overflowing, and obviously not been emptied for some time. The dog water bowls are empty and green with algae. The area is below ground, and has one picnic bench. If that is occupied, you have to juggle a dog lead, a drink and any food.
It is a disgrace that the Castle treats any visitors like this. It would be better to be honest and state that dogs and their owners are not welcome.

This was an interesting castle, more for its history than architecture. Not a regal castle as one would expect in Europe. Worth a visit.

Our visit to Belfast Castle was a delightful experience, combining stunning views, rich history, and engaging activities for the whole family. Located on the slopes of Cave Hill, the castle offers a picturesque setting and a glimpse into Belfast’s past. Here’s a detailed review of our visit:
Arrival and First Impressions:
The drive up to Belfast Castle provides stunning views of the city and surrounding landscape. The castle’s imposing structure and beautifully landscaped gardens immediately impressed us. We found ample parking available near the entrance, and the approach to the castle is both scenic and inviting.
Castle Tour and Exhibits:
1. Historical Insights:
The castle’s history is fascinating, with its origins dating back to the 12th century, though the current structure was built in the 19th century. The information plaques and displays inside the castle provided a detailed history of the building and its significance to Belfast. We particularly enjoyed the stories about the castle’s past residents and the legendary “Cave Hill” views.
2. Interior Exploration:
The interior rooms of the castle are charmingly decorated, showcasing period furniture and artwork. The Great Hall and the Drawing Room were highlights, giving us a sense of the grandeur of the past. Although the interior is not as extensive as some other historical sites, the rooms we visited were well-preserved and interesting.
3. The Castle Grounds:
The castle grounds are a major highlight. The beautifully maintained gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll. The views from the castle, especially of the surrounding hills and Belfast city, are breathtaking. The walking trails around Cave Hill are well-marked and offer excellent opportunities for family-friendly hikes.
4. The Gift Shop and Café:
The castle’s gift shop had a lovely selection of local crafts, souvenirs, and books. We found some unique gifts and mementos of our visit. The Castle’s café offered a pleasant place for a break. We enjoyed a light lunch with a view of the gardens. The café had a good selection of sandwiches, cakes, and beverages, though it could be a bit busy during peak times.
Family-Friendly Features:
1. Activities for Children:
The castle grounds include play areas where children can enjoy some free play. The space is safe and well-maintained, making it a great spot for kids to burn off some energy. Additionally, the castle sometimes hosts family-friendly events and activities, which can be a fun addition to the visit if scheduled during your trip.
2. Accessibility:
The castle is accessible, with ramps and paths accommodating visitors with mobility issues. However, the hilly terrain around the castle might be challenging for those with difficulty walking. The staff were helpful and accommodating, providing assistance where needed.
Accessibility and Amenities:
1. Visitor Information:
The staff at the visitor center were friendly and knowledgeable, providing useful information about the castle and its history. They were happy to answer our questions and offer suggestions for exploring the area.
2. Facilities:
The facilities were clean and well-maintained. There are restrooms available, and the castle grounds have plenty of seating areas where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Final Thoughts:
Belfast Castle is a wonderful destination for a family outing, offering a blend of historical exploration, scenic beauty, and outdoor activities. The combination of the castle’s rich history and the stunning views from the grounds make it a memorable experience. While the interior is relatively modest compared to some other historic castles, the castle’s setting and gardens more than make up for it.
Overall Experience: A visit to Belfast Castle provides a charming and enriching experience for families. It’s a great place to enjoy history, nature, and panoramic views of Belfast. We left with a sense of having explored a significant piece of local heritage and enjoyed a relaxing day in a beautiful setting.

Coming from Scotland we have visited many castles and seen castles in London, Cardiff and Dublin. So decided to see another Irish castle in Belfast.
It was worth the drive to see the view and the small but beautiful gardens. But the castle itself was a disappointment. It is free but it would be better if they invested in the castle and charged an entrance fee.
Still worth it for the view and by contrast the Titanic Exhibition is one of the best tourist destinations. Accordingly, a drive for a good view is still okay.

We went to the Castle for a private concert and dinner afterwards. The scenery was amazing, and the food was wonderful. They were able to accommodate my allergies, and still provide an amazing meal. I highly recommend this castle. It has an amazing view of the city, and the castle itself is very beautiful.

Can’t believe I never heard of Belfast Castle, with more media promotion the 100,000 visitor could easily be increased five fold. It is a real gem and well worth a visit. The castle and grounds are beautiful and the history of the castle and previous castles on the site is very interesting. There was a fair and a rock choir there during my visit last Sunday. The grounds and the views are amazing. There is a great playground for children and the caves to explore.

The views and gardens are lovely but that's about it. I was pretty confused walking around and most other guests seemed in the same boat. No coffee shop just an outside catering van that just did instant coffee. This could be a lovely place but it's boring and depressing.

Our visit to Belfast Castle was a mixed experience. While the stunning gardens and the presence of the resident castle cat added some charm to the visit, we found the overall castle to be somewhat disappointing. Rather than a traditional historic castle, this was more a visitor centre and banquet hall.
The gardens surrounding the castle were indeed beautiful, offering picturesque views of the city and providing a serene atmosphere for a leisurely stroll.
One of the highlights of our visit was learning about the castle cat, who added a playful and endearing touch to the experience. It is said that good fortune will come to those visiting Belfast Castle as long as the tradition of the castle cat is kept. The tradition dates back to the castle's history, where there has always been a resident white cat. The gardens below celebrate this tale with nine references made to the cat in paving sculpture and garden furniture.

The website says it is closed for Covid. It seems that the gardens and grounds are still open though. Is this correct? Just can’t enter the castle?

Looking for recommendations for where to stay in Belfast that is convenient to Belfast Castle.
Thank you!

To be honest I think staying in the city center is really the best thing to do as a visitor to Belfast. The Castle is very easy to reach with the local bus system or take a taxi.

Dear all needed an advise please . We are two families with four adults and three kids aged 2 to 4 have booked a ferry from Liverpool to Belfast over bank holiday weekend unfortunately all the cabins were booked we didn’t want to cancel our trip,so went ahead and booked. Do we have any place/ facilities to make our kids sleep on air matttress in the ferry overnight. Any helpful advise will be much appreciated
เขียนเมื่อ 8 สิงหาคม 2018
There are no places set aside for sleeping on the passenger decks. May I suggest you contact the ferry company before bringing air beds etc and get written permission. If you don't you will likely be prevented from using them.
One good thing is that footfall does decrease as the evening progresses so there should be plenty of areas where you can use your air beds etc.
Mind you it's a long time since I slept on that particular ferry. so long ago it was the Ulster Prince.

Is it open so we can look inside also? Looks amazing on the outside on the pictures :)

The ground floor is open and there is a cafeteria in the cellars. There is also full access to the ornamental gardens. The upper floors weren't accessible whilst we were there but that may change as the rooms up there are normally available for hire so you should check on arrival. The staff are very friendly.

Planning to visit Belfast Castle and walk through Cave Hill Country Park in the evening (after 6pm). Are there taxis available until the grounds close around 10:30pm? Don't have phone access and don't want to get stuck there.

We went by private car so can't help with the public transport side of things. Barry 2137 has given you an excellent response. Alternatively, you can buy a pay as you go cellphone for around £10 ($13). You can use it for your time here and then dispose of it as you wish because there is no contract. Simply put on whatever funds you need while you are here. It makes pretty good sense because you just never know when you'll need to make an emergency call.

You can get a taxi anytime but they are not located near the grounds. You could book the taxi in advance, I am sure someone in the castle could arrange that for you. We are all friendly here and nobody will see you stuck!

The website said it opens until 10pm. on Saturdays. Is it worth going there in the evening time? Will I be able to see anything? Thank you.
