We decided to visit Cave Hill County Park as we were going to Belfast Castle situated next to the park. We did a 6.5 circular walk taking us up to McArt’s Fort where we got some fantastic views of Belfast. Then descending back down to the castle.
The first 2 kilometres are up hill but a pleasant walk after this. With a stop at the cafe at Belfast Castle before catching bus back to Belfast at the nearby Antrim Road. Beautiful views and some exercise a win win.

A great place to walk at any time of year but most especially on a sunny day .
Plenty of different walks to suit all levels of fitness and lots to see along the way .
Suitable footwear needed , no sandals or flip flops !!

Super randonnée, convient bien aux débutants. La vue est très belle arrivée en haut. Prévoyez une tenue équipée. Le chemin est bien indiquer avec Google maps, Cavehill est à proximité du château de Belfast.

Make sure to go on a clear day as the views across Belfast and beyond are spectacular. Walk to the summit is relative easy.

Great place to escape the city on a metro day ticket . There is lots of hidden private places . And excellent views of of the Lough and city .

Disabled people at huge disadvantage perfect tarmac roads but zoo on hill its tough going it is worse than our national zoo Edinburgh and its on a hill but unlike Belfast accomodate wheelchair and people with mobility issues. This is my major gripe this day and age the zoo should be told they must be disabled friendly. I wasnt impressesd with the 2m distance in certain areas like the penguin and sea lion area i thin a member of staff need to police this and also in inside viewing areas i felt extremely vulnerable

First trip up to cavehill and it was lovely, sunny spring day paths where dry and views where stunning, just a couple of things to complain about.
1. When you leave the car park there's no more markers to show where your going or if there was they weren't very visible to us.
2. Dog owners!!!!!! We had to keep telling our kids to watch out and avoid standing in the dog poo that was everywhere, like why buy a dog if you can't clean up after it,
Again that aside we enjoyed our day out and will defo visit again

I've been a regular visitor to Cavehill Country Park and Napoleon's Nose for 30 years. It's such a beautiful, historical, iconic part of Belfast. However in recent times it's been in such a sorry, dilapidated, dirty messy state. The footfall has increased tenfold in the past year and it's taken it's toll. Cars are parking on grass verges and ruining them. Litter and dog dirt are everywhere. The paths are being worn away while bikers are destroying the treks on the side of the Cavehill. I never see wardens in the Country Park while the Council have failed the place badly. If local politicians and the Parks Committee don't take urgent action Cavehill Country Park and the Castle grounds will be destroyed beyond repair. Do something now and don't let it happen!

So, honestly top of hill is like every mountain, some rocks, grass and few walkers with sad smiles.
But interesting are ways on top, one way probably the most excisting is from Zoo side, just park car somewhere in the area of Zoo on top of Antrim Rd and go by path behind of Zoo, be careful, not advised to walk with strollers, many steps and sometimes path is very narrow and sleepy, but views awesome, and typical for this kind of landscape nature is really nice.
Next approach is from Upper Cave Hill Rd, it's way by forest, picturesque a bit challenging sometimes because steep, wear some shoes not on heals, not proffesional shoes, just some with bold tread on bottom for good grip, it's advised fro every mountain walk anyway :)
But path is technically easy, You can go with kids, nice views and beatiful nature.
The fastest walk to Cave Hill top is by Carr's Glen Linear Park, just go straight by park, You don't will be disapointed. There is a stream with deep valley, wild nature, nice views, sometimes You can miss some nice jogging girl.
For lazy and motorised is Cave Hill Car Park on Upper Hightown Rd, from there is straight short walk on top, there ususally is a bit muddy so get some wellingtons.
Interesting can be way beside of Cave Hill Castle, castle is a bit disappointing from close, it looks much better from distance, but way to top is as well by forest and reachable from Antrim Rd.
Next station Divis Mountain.

Just wondering how long it would take to walk up to the caves and what level of fitness would be required. I'm not overly fit - but not unfit either. Did the Giant's Causeway earlier in the week and wondering if I'd be able for this and how long it would take. Thanks in advance

If you managed to climb up the cliff, you will be all right here. There is a couple of trails to choose, so you can adjust it according to your wishes. The longest one with the best views if I rember correctly was about 8 kilometres so 3 hours should be absolutely enough.

Which trail should I take to get the best view? Is it necessary to take the longest trail? Or do some of the shorter trails take you up the top to the famous and best views too?

If you haven't got time the short route at castle to caves has a terrific view over Belfast Lough and also a lovely trek through trees

I agree with the previous answer. Very small paths as well at the last trail back to the castle when going the full round.

yes there is, get a bus out to Belfast Zoo up the Antrim Road. There is a path leading to the top of Cave-hill from the side of the entrance to the zoo. It is a decent and at times steep hike, but worth it.

It’s easier on the lower path, it is a proper path and there are places to rest and leads up to the castle itself - I would test it first though as you know your mum better than me!
