This nice statue is situeted inWest Princes Street Gardens. Thomas Guthrie was a Scottish divine and philanthropist. He studied in Edinburgh and Paris. He was one of the most popular preachers of his day in Scotland and spoke about temperance and other ideas of social reform, and to support compulsory education, which he believed would reduce teenage criminality.

A Founder of Industrial schools . Attended Edinburgh University studying Surgery ,Anatomy and Theology . Well respected in his field . He stopped drinking alcohol when he was 38 . The Manse fund in Scotland was the recipient of large sums of money from his fund raising. He was born on the .12 July 1803 and died 24 February 1873.

Thomas Guthrie was a noted philanthropist and Preacher of Scotland..He was associated with Ragged schools .. the statue can be easily missed even though it stands right on the princes street..It is made of Portland stone

...... historically relevant statue in a city that is seemingly awash with them - which isn't to criticise indeed I do feel more cities should make the effort to memorialise those associated with them who have meaningfully achieved.
This statue is to a 19th century philanthropist who in particular assisted in the provision of education to the poorer masses - a most worthy cause which for me at least is deserving of a memorial - an indicator of the way to go for others perhaps.

The plinth that the statue of Thomas Guthrie stands on states that he was a preacher and philanthropist. I must admit that I had never heard of Thomas Guthrie or had any idea why he would merit a statue and I suspect that most people that past by would be the same. I have found out that he was a very popular preacher of his day and was a founder of the "ragged schools" in Edinburgh( I have read with interest that the original ragged school was in the building that is now part of the Camera Obscura )
A great and kind man but sadly forgotten so I am glad that I have got to know something of his history.
The statue stands in Princes Street Gardens near the railings so it can be viewed from the street.

This statue stands in tribute to Thomas Guthrie, a Scottish preacher and philanthropist in the 19th century. His main legacy was his contribution to temperance movement and "Ragged Schools", which were schools providing education to destitute children,
The statue is located in Princes Street Gardens amongst fellow famous Scots. It depicts the figure of Thomas Guthrie with a ragged boy, while holding a bible in his right arm, in reference to his legacies.
The statue is in a bit of a sorry state, with a layer of moss on much of it. The sentiments are worthy though.
