Great stay but needs some slight improvements
ก.ย. ค.ศ. 2021 • คู่รัก
I had booked a 2 night stay at this hotel for me and the hubby following a recommendation from a friend who is a coach driver and had stayed here many times previously, however after reading some of the reviews I nearly cancelled our stay.
I was very apprehensive when we arrived but was really pleasantly surprised, check in was easy and the receptionist was pleasant and helpful, we booked our evening meal for that night and breakfast for the following day at check in but were told that we would need to come back again the following day to book our evening meal for the 2nd night and then breakfast as they only worked one day at a time and we were fine with this. (at the time)
Our room was lovely, situated at the rear of the property it was quiet, immaculately clean, spacious and had everything that we needed for our stay. We had a drink in the bar before our evening meal, the bar man was lovely, very friendly and chatty and we felt very relaxed in our surroundings which were so much nicer than I had seen described on other reviews. Our meal was lovely, service was good but the dining room needs a revamp as it felt more like an unused function room than a hotel dining room.
We slept well, the bed was perfect, very comfy, there was the occasional banging of doors in the corridor until the early hours of the morning but nothing major.
Breakfast was a buffet style, well set up, plenty of choice and everything looked and tasted really nice, no complaints at all.
The only problem we encountered was when I went to reception the following morning to book our evening meal for the 2nd night, I requested 8pm as we had booked to take a steam train journey in the afternoon and wouldn’t be arriving back at the station until 7pm, I was told that there was no availability at 8pm as they were expecting a big group in and all they could offer was 7pm which was too early for us so we ended up going into the town and had a lovely meal there however when we returned to the hotel at 8.15 we walked past the window of the dining room to see only a handful of people in there eating which thoroughly annoyed us as we clearly could have had our meal there, to me it seemed really off that I had been unable to book our evening meal that morning when obviously they had already accepted bookings for a group who hadn’t even arrived at that time, surely our booking should have been taken as we were already there and the “big group” should have fitted in where there was availability ? Aren’t all paying guests as important as each other ? It’s such a shame as this spoilt what had been a great stay up to that point.
Overall it was a good stay, needs some adjustments to how meals are booked and a good sort out in the dining room and it will be spot on.

Ben Nevis - Amazing experience
ต.ค. ค.ศ. 2021 • เพื่อนๆ
Amazing experience. Began at visitors centre and walked up pony track/mountain track. First half up to the loch half decent path of gravel, rocks and stone steps. Second part was more trickier and lots of rocks and even boulders at times to go over. At times the path was not easy to identify and in poor visibility or snow it would have been very difficult. At top part the stone cairn markers are a real help. Done it during October and it was dry when we started however at the top it was very wet and cold. Used walking poles which really helped especially on the way back down. Took 1.5 litres of water and drank about half of this and some high energy snacks. Walking boots a must as the terrain is difficult at times. Good waterproofs essential. I would do it again however wouldn’t fancy it on my own. One of our party got an injury on the way down and it was a tough and long descent.

Fantastic scenery!
ต.ค. ค.ศ. 2021 • เพื่อนๆ
After 5 days West Highland Way we wanted to climb the Ben Nevis on the 6th day. Unfortunately the weather was very bad with heavy rains. So did not manage to the top. Hopefully next year! Had a nice beer in the Ben Nevis Inn! Enjoyed the beautiful Scottisch scenery!

The real review

Now everything you read will be pretty accurate. Apart from the decent.

This is an exceptional hike, this was our first time and second time climbing a mountain. The views are fantastic, the climb is nice and steady until about half way.

You will get to a point where your asking the people on their way down "how much longer" but keep at it. Its either 20 minute or 2 hours. Either way..keep going!!

The summit is stunning and a true example of adrenalin kicking in. I was exhausted and then boom...I could have ran to the summit. But there was so much snow. I was elated at the summit. It is SO worth it.

Now..m the decent! Honestly harder than thr climb, don't try a short cut either - they're dangerous. But your legs will kill if you don't have poles and your feet will burn!!

I advise parking by Glen Nevis car park. It s steep climb first off to meet the normal mountain path. But it will save you 2 miles on your way down. The other parking is the Ben Nevis Visitors Centre.

There are of course other paths. We did the mountain track. Alot easier than scafel pike I reckon.

Lucozade sports are a must, plenty of water. Don't wear trainers...your feet will get wet when cross the river. And it's ankle sprain city and some points. Get some proper boots in a nut shell. Incredible, lots of snow, really incredible, long (8 hours it took us). And beware the decent!

Conquering The Ben!
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2021 • ครอบครัว
Conquered The Ben in late August with my 9 year old daughter - proper wanted to give up after the first hour but glad we carried on, great sense of achievement at the top (though visibility was poor).

The route is tough, make no mistake, it’s steep in places, unrelenting and exposed to the elements - which make the achievement all the greater. Parts of the path are just loose rocks and it was fortunate that the day I was born I was visited by the Mountain Goat God who blessed me with mountain goat skills in traversing tricky paths - my daughter wasn’t so fortunate, as when she was born I chased the Mountain Goat God away, mistaking the Diety for a common goat - hence she tripped and stumbled several times.

I can’t recommend this enough for those adventurous souls who want something more out of life - climb The Ben!!

Hard work - but worth it
ก.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
We climbed Ben Nevis the last weekend in September , the weather started warm , but within an hour or so we were layering up and starting to get wet.

We stomped up the mountain in 3hrs 20mins - it was far too cold to sit and eat at the top , and actually none of us were hungry anyway - running on 1 energy gel and a load of cashews! so we raced down the mountain in 1hr 58mins.

Although it is pretty much up hill the entire way (there was 1 flat section) the downhill is far harder on your body - my calves and thighs are just about recovering now - 5 days later.
I am not a hiker , but had got in a few hikes in the weeks running up to this , and felt that Ben Nevis was easily achievable - but everyone is different - and don't attempt without at least a couple of weeks training up/down hill! your body won't appreciate it if you don't!

Also there weren't really any scary ledges - which was one of my worries!

unreal achievement.

climbed 19th sept, hardest thing i have ever done but there is a real sense of achievement when you reach the top & can say you have climbed the tallest mountain in GB! the conditions at the top were brutal however we came prepared with extra layers, clothes & coats! if you are thinking of doing this, i would say prepare for the longest walk, you’ll likely want to give up many times but just keep going!

Brutal but amazing sense of achievement
ก.ย. ค.ศ. 2021 • คู่รัก
My husband and i, along with our 2 dogs I climbed ‘The Ben’ yesterday. We got to the summit and down in 6hrs 40.
It was amazing amazing experience although I found it brutal! We were lucky with the weather- only having rain for 30 mins on our descent. The path is clear to follow. Everyone on the same org is encouraging which helps. Lots of short stops and plenty of water and snacks helped. Really feeling it in my legs today!

Not the break we expected!
พ.ค. ค.ศ. 2021 • ครอบครัว
On a short visit to Scotland my wife and daughter were descending Ben Nevis after they had walked just over half way to the summit. It had briefly rained and although with all the correct walking gear my wife slipped on a rock and broke her left fibula.
Unable to walk my daughter called 999 and the mountain rescue team were called.
I was at the bottom of the highest peak in Scotland and saw the rescue team arrive and set up. It had taken my wife some hour and half to get where she had fallen but this team of 12 said they would be there in 20 mins!!
After about an hour they all appeared again with my wife on a stretcher and had taken it in turns carrying her over the rocky parts.
A most impressive piece of coordinated and rapid rescue from a dedicated group of volunteers who do this in practice each week and rescue about another two per week.
All our thanks go to the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team.
An hour or so later my wife was in plaster and we continued our tour of Scotland adapting to the disablement.

Fantastic views on the way up, shame it was cloudy on the peak but still worth all the effort…. We’ll have to do it again.
