Originally built in the 1480's, as the baronial dwelling of the Maxwell family, Newark belongs to the fourth period of castles built in Scotland - the renaissance style.
Florid ornamentation replaced gothic severity, and, angle turrets became bow windows.
This remains one of the finest specimens of 17C architecture in Scotland.
The hamlet of Newark sprang up around it, and in 1668, the Maxwell's' sold off land to the magistrates of Glasgow to build the "Port of Glasgow" here as this was as far as the Clyde could be accessed by sailing ship.

Absolutely fascinating little Castle with some original medieval wooden rafters. The gentleman at the desk today (3/7/22) was pleasant to talk to and clearly passionate about history. I highly recommend a visit to this Castle to anyone visiting this area.

I have driven past here on a number of occasions and missed the turning! Today I paid more attention to the signposting and pulled in to the castle and parking area. Set on the banks of the Clyde estuary, Newark castle is a fine small scale castle run by historic Scotland. It looked closed, no sign making this obvious. There is an area around it for picnicking with splendid views. Worth a visit, even if just for the nice location.

The castle is a beautiful one but it’s smaller than i expected. You can’t go inside it currently but it’s still nice to walk around.

It used to be hidden between two shipyards , now that the East side yard has been cleared away it is much more visible , it marks the end of the River Clyde and the beginning of the Firth of Clyde , nearby you can see the old Gourock ropeworks building now Loft Apartments , on rhe roundabout there used to be an Episcopalin church , now moved one miles to the South East , Scotrail stations are equidistant Woodhall has a walkway along the riverside to the Castle and Port Glasgow station is in the Town centre .

Visited on a cold November afternoon, it wasnt open but was able to get a good look at it, and look across the water. Carpark right next to it so if driving past call in for a very historic part of Port Glasgow

Some castles had a long walk from the car par. This was pretty close. Buses can't fit under the gate, probably no vans either. The castle was nice,about 10 minutes from Dumbarton Castle easy to get to.

This little beauty is located almost right next to the cruise ship dock and probably gets overlooked by many travelers. Its small, but pretty cool and worth a quick stop to check out.
