Mary Gibbons is brilliant and delightful. My wife and I toured the Newgrange Passage Tomb of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site of Brú na Bóinne and we also visited the Hill of Tara, the ancient capital of Ireland.
This tour was one of the best of our lifetime. The bus was spacious with each person having their own 2 seats. The driving and logistics were easy and smooth. Mary is a gem. Filled with wonderful insights, stories, and humor. She is a modern Indiana Jones.

This is a tour of a lifetime if you can get booked as the tickets for entry to Newgrange are limited. On this tour you get to enter the center of the tunnel portal which is 5,500 year old. Most people don't get to enter and its on a rationed ticket system now. So book early. Our docent was Mia who was excellent, very knowledgeable about these historic sites and has obviously studied and history well. You need your best walking shoes a she goes quickly up the Hill of Tara. You also enjoy the park guides at Knowth and Newgrange but Mia supplements it well between times. All the needed tickets and timing of entry is managed for you. Comfortable coach from Dublin to sites.

Mary Gibbons is a great tour guide! She is extremely knowledgeable and will have great conversations with you. Mary will make you feel welcome and taken care of and she has a great reputation with the New Grange staff.
I just spent 3 weeks in Ireland with my mother, we went on many tours and Mary was my favourite guide. There's no dull moment with Mary, you'll have loads of fun!

Don't miss this tour, there may be alternative tours but Mary Gibbons is the best resource one could ask for. Her knowledge of the history and cultural significance of Newgrange, the Hill of Tara and Knowth opened up world after world and gave us such rich context for many of the later sites we visited in other parts of Ireland. It's a pleasure to be in the company of one so informed and such a wonderful story teller. Top marks for this tour, thanks to Mary and her good driver, we had a perfect day.

Excellent tour with a knowledgable guide. Mary gives a comprehensive overview of Irish history from Stone Age times to recent times. The group is limited to 24. We met other travelers from all over the world. The stop for a bite to eat at Newgrange Farm was okay except there was an issue with women's restrooms -- not Mary's fault but I hope they are able to improve that as Ireland is a place of cleanliness and operational toilets. We limited driving in Dublin, so this tour was great for us. No waiting in line. Book well ahead on this one folks.

We went on the Newgrange, Knowth, and Hill of Tara tour on May 12th through Mary Gibbons, though our tour guide was a different person (May/Mai was her name, we believe). We had a mixed experience, though in general it was positive. We were under the impression that the tour would be led by Mary Gibbons, but another person swapped with Mary at the beginning of the drive to Newgrange, which was confusing for us. The tour guide we ended up with unfortunately didn’t resonate well with what we enjoy, as we felt that we were simply receiving fact after fact rather than being told historical stories. We were unable to follow along what was being described (stories being started but not finished, etc), so the drive to the sites was quite boring. The driver, however, was excellent and got us there and back very safely. The visit to the Hill of Tara wasn’t particularly great as it was led by the bus tour guide, but luckily things changed when we arrived to the Newgrange visitor centre. From there, we essentially were left in the care of the visitor centre staff members. The visitor centre is beautiful and has a lovely museum (though make sure you go to the National Museum of Ireland if you want to see the actual artifacts), and had a spacious café and clean washrooms. When we arrived at the sites of Knowth and Newgrange, official tour guides (not the Mary Gibbons one) brought us around the sites and provided a wonderful experience, where we learned lots about the history of the sites and their excavations. We felt that we had a good amount of time at the sites, and we were pleased to be able to go inside Newgrange with the guide. Overall, we would not recommend the Mary Gibbons tour if you had another way of reaching Newgrange, but as we did not have a car it was still the most convenient way to get to the sites. Otherwise, we believe it is likely best to reserve tickets to Newgrange directly and get yourself there without paying for the Mary Gibbons guide. We cannot say whether our experience would have been enhanced if it were truly Mary Gibbons who had offered the tour, but the person we were with was unfortunately not able to enhance the tour for us.

Me and my mum went on the tour to The Hills of Tara, Knowth and Newgrange with Mary and her lovely driver. We went on the 23rd of May and all i can say is excellent. Mary was very informative, the weather was great which added to the trip. The other members on the tour, from all over the globe, especially USA & Canada were friendly, a lovely little group, can't fault any part of the day.
If you want to see these place, I highly recommend Mary's tour.

We took part of the tour on Thursday 18th May. The sites were amazing. The visit of the visitor center, Newgrange and Knowth is done in an extremely quiet and peaceful way. 25 people max. allows to benefit a lot from the sites. It's so well organised that you may find ways to take pictures without anyone on it (like if the site was all yours). The region of Brú na Bóinne is also beautiful in itself.
Our guide, Martin, was excellent: knowledgeable and a good sense of humour. He was always adding information on other historical events (e.g. battle of Clontarf).
I was there with my son of 14, and he gave this trip a top mark.

How many people are on this tour? Is it a big bus or a small group/

This was a full size bus. There were probably 40-50 People on the tour we were on. This was one of the few tours I have been on that the number large number of people on the did not detract from the tour. It was that good.
What is actually included in the day trip? The website of the company is vague. It sounds like several pickups in Dublin, drive to Boyne Valley. It sounds like the Hill of Tara in the morning. Is there a guided walking tour? Do you get out and walk around the Hill of Slane or just see it from the bus? Same question for Battle of the Boyne site? Do you go in the visitor center before or after going in the Newgrange tomb? Did you have enough time at each stop?

On the drive to the Hill of Tara, Mary gave quite a bit of information about Irish history and archaeology. Upon arrival at Tara, we were given an orientation and then time to explore on our own (about an hour). From there, the bus took us to a farm just next to Newgrange. We had lunch (there is a small cafe). The bus then dropped us at Newgrange, where we had a guided tour including entry into the tomb. We were then shuttled by mini buses back to the Boyne Valley visitor center, where we had time to look at the exhibits before boarding the bus to return to Dublin.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for a wonderful day touring the countryside. As I mentioned, if you are interested in reading more about ancient Aztec, Mayan’s, Toltec’s of Mexico and Central America, read the book “The Aztec” by Gary Jennings. The basic story is after the Spaniards colonized, Mexico and Central America and sacked and destroyed anything that seem like a pagan god or religion, they had very little understanding of the native culture they destroyed. So, one of the high ranking clergy in Mexico, was curious and decided to interview and old Aztec that remembered life prior to colonization. In this particular case, this Aztec was the last scribe of the Aztec nobles, keeping all records in Pictograms the written language of the day. While the Aztec character portrayed in the book I think is purely fictional, the historical prospective of the ancient cultures is very accurate. In particular the Mayan’s that date back to 2,000 BC. Also mound builders.
It’s a long read, but very interesting. I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks Greg Baker

Is it a coach bus or smaller vehicle? How many are allowed in each tour group? Thank you.

It's a coach bus. You're only broken into smaller groups to go inside the Newgrange structure at the site. (The groups take turns since there's only so many that can fit.)

I note on your page you reserve the right to cancel if there are insufficient numbers. How likely would this be,as we are coming from New Zealand with restricted available time.

Where is your nearest stop to the Ballsbridge Hotel, and how difficult is the hill of Tara to climb for a senior person
Mary G
Dublin, Dublin, Ireland
Hello,
The closet pickup for the Ballsbridge Hotel, would be the Mespil Hotel. However if you wish to make a booking you will have to contact us directly.
The Hill of Tara is fine for all ages, however we do recommend that you wear good walking shoes, as the ground can be uneven and slippery if it is raining.

If I stay at the Holiday Inn Express Dublin City Centre, where do I get picked up for the tour ?
Mary G
Dublin, Dublin, Ireland
The pickup would be from outside the AIB Bank37/38 Upper O'Connell Street at 10.25 or 8.15, depending on what day you go. For all information about the tour and pickup points have a look at the webpage as it contains everything you need.
