Military presence on this site goes back to the first building constructed on site in 1701. The current building architecture pretty well sums up the oppressive British presence in Ireland. It is fascinating and terrifying at the same time. The displays inside the building are varied and very interesting. From an extensive display of Irish military history to clothing, silver ware, clocks, statues. The collection in this building is like nothing I have ever seen before. If you are thinking of visiting, I recommend spending the entire day on site. It's well worth a visit.

Well worth a visit. Very interesting and well run, a pleasant experience. Irish history locally and globally everything from war and conflict to fashion throughout the decades. Excellent.

Several different collections on display. Some were really impressive, and others didn't really speak to me. I would still suggest giving this museum a visit. Overall, this location is highly recommended!

The decorative arts were interesting, but what I loved was the geology exhibit on the first floor. I learned about the earliest map makers and the extraordinarily complicated geologic features including the connection to the Appalachian regions of the US east coast.

This museum has an awesome collection of historical artifacts from many eras in Ireland’s history. The museum is well done and easy to follow. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the decorative arts areas and my husband enjoyed the military history section.

From the time I walked through the door of this wonderful museum into the Hall of Heros my mind immediately went back to my youth. The name Jadotsville brought back memories of the First Irish troops to go abroad with the United Nations. They were very brave men, several of whom lost their lives in the Niemba Ambush in the then Belgian Congo. I particularly remembered Trooper Brown whose body was not recovered for some time. The archivist, Sergeant Denis McGarry, was a fantastic tour guide who clearly loves history and taking people around the museum. I spent 2 hours in his company learning everything I could about Collins Barracks itself and the museum. I soaked up every bit of information he gave me. I visited the Michael Collins room as well as the rest of the museum and saw many of the artifacts from Irish history such as Michael Collin's rosary beads along with his gun. For anyone interested in Irish History this museum is a must. The entrance is a little further on from the Main Collins Barracks and for security reasons one has to ring a doorbell before entry is allowed. My visit to this museum was the highlight of my few days in Cork. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

When we visit Dublin we can't keep away from this place. One of the best attractions to those who love Irish history. This time, besides viewing the Sir John Lavery "Treaty" exhibit again, we took the general tour given by one of the very knowledgeable guides on Sunday afternoon. Our guide, Lisa, really brought the museum to life with her stories and interesting facts.
We highly recommend this museum to everyone. It's housed in the Michael Collins barracks, formerly the barracks for the British army before 1922. There is also a person we want to mention who always recognizes my wife and I when we visit (even though we hadn't been there in six months). Her name is Catrina and she always greets us with a smile at the front entrance desk.

We discovered this museum by accident and were so glad we did. An amazing place and like all museums in Ireland, admission is free. It has an eclectic mix of exhibits spread over very large barracks. Irish military history, Irish civil war, Clothes over the times, Living styles over the years and probably many more that we missed. Highly recommended.

The National Museum has a variety of school tours to suit both pupils ages and interests. It also has pre-tour packs for teachers to enable them prepare the pupils before they arrive and get the most benefit from the visit. Tours are free but must be booked at least two weeks in advance. Make sure to visit the Asgard hall - wonderful yacht.
