Absolutely loved this bar, so different to the crap places that are around nowadays, you feel like you're stepping back in time to a beautiful artistic, majestic era, where people actually sit down, speak to one another, have the craic and a pint of Guinness. Met people from all walks of life there, can't wait to go back, highly, highly recommend

You have to search the “Hole in the Wall” specifically via the address and if there were not a sign at the entrance to the small alley, you probably would not dare to go down the small and dark alley into the backyard. Once you have done that and entered, you have a “small” experience, in the double sense of the word.
The pub is really small on the ground floor. Standing there can fit about 15-20 people. You (therefore) get into conversation with other guests immediately. The decor is like imagining an old Irish pub. The boss and his team behind the bar are great and you can talk to them immediately. The bar has all the drinks you can expect.
However, there was no food or snack in our impression. That would have been difficult just because of the (non-existent) space.
The upper floor, which you can see in many photos, was empty and not in operation during our visit, at least on Saturdays. If we have understood the boss correctly, he is no longer organizing live music for personal reasons. Internet presence and Instagram page are not maintained at the moment.
For this reason we give a point deduction, because we went to the pub on Recommendation and because of the expected live music. Alternatively, we would have liked accompanying music in the background, but at least during our visit it was overall very quiet in the pub.
Conclusion: The atmosphere is unique and worth a visit as well as 1-2 Guinness. 😊👍 You should be a bit sociable and open for conversation and getting to know each other.

If cozy and small is your jam, this is the place for you! It is the best little pocket of goodness in Kilkenny. The ambiance lends to natural conversations among the patrons (the best bit). And if a wandering musician happens to stop in, well then, that is when the real magic happens! I hope that someday you will be as lucky as we were with our experiences here.

We sought this bar out because it's a piece of Kilkenny history. The place is tiny but the name gives it away. The place is quite cluttered so not for everyone. The staff were friendly. Glad we visited.

Visited again after a few years gap, and it did not disappoint. Quirky, fun and the most sociable venue in town. You arrive as strangers but leave as friends, such is the craic. Once visited, never forgotten - the laughter, songs and stories from Michael and customers from around the world, made our visit memorable - it’s so much more than a 500 year old hostelry.

What a wonderful story of saving the past to enjoy in the present and future!
Michael is clearly passionate about holding this special gem's place in history ! He will have even more time now to dedicate to that cause~> and to cultivating some new jokes and stories.

Hard to find , no signs I recall visible from the street ! Friendly people , I think majority of patrons are tourist ! Great lace for a quick beer and share war stories with fellow tourist! Doesn’t open until around 6 pm . Several places to seat!

Friendly locals… Folks from California, Wexford, Cork, Arkansas, and I forget where else!! One of a kind experience! It’s been a bar since the 1500s!! Tiny bar, tiny patio, little music venue on second floor. What a great bunch of characters having conversations!!

Great local pub with a clientele of locals to interact with. Feels exactly like a pub should feel. People interacting over a pint and chatting. It was our 50th anniversary and a local man bought us pints!!!!! what more do you want???

This was the best local experience you can have with a historic pub. Meghan our bartender was amazing and such an incredible host! Live music every Friday and Saturday.
