We arrived somewhat unannounced in Derby and emailed Pip and Elaine asking if a tour that evening was possible. Elaine responded immediately and said there was no tour scheduled that evening but she would happily take us on one anyway. Pip and Elaine arrived at our meeting spot at the arranged time and we then spent 4 hours visiting 6 fabulous pubs committed to the real ale movement. Pip and Elaine were welcomed in every pub as if they were family and we too were treated as old friends. They are both very knowledgeable about cask ales and brewing techniques. Snacks and conversation were in great supply. They are wonderful people and we could not recommend them highly enough. Try a pint of Ay Up with Elaine's soda bread and you will become a cask ale convert!

I am from Derby and in my youth thought I had found all the good pubs. How wrong was I, Pip and Elaine have designed a tour that visits real gems of licensed premises that even brew their own craft ales. Located all over Derby they delight you with their quirkiness. From a large hotel to basically one small room, the pubs offer a glimpse into the past whilst also embracing the future. The beer was good, you get a half in each pub, along with a range of 'beer-related' snacks. Pip and Elaine are good company and know their beer! Ippy, the mini-bus driver was fasting for Ramadam and came alive after sunset once he had eaten, a good bloke. The whole tour was enjoyable and well worth the cost. If you are visiting Derby just do it!

Was struggling to think of something a bit different for my brother's stag do (on a budget), and pleased I got in touch with Pip and Elaine who host this exceptional real ale tour. We (11 guys) were picked up in a minibus and ferried from one fantastic pub to another for the afternoon, sampling some amazing beers and enjoying various beer-themed snacks provided by our guides along the way. Our micro-brewery tour at The Brunswick kicked things off entertainingly and informatively, and at every stop we were treated to half of the house ale along with anecdotes and history of the pub itself. We all had a great day socialising and seeing new (old) places in our great city, as well as the usual stag banter - which Pip and Elaine were only too happy to get involved with!
Cannot recommend this tour enough to anyone new to the city - or anyone who's lived in Derby there whole life wanting a fresh look at their home town. The beer/pub culture in the city has never been better, and this tour was, for us, the best possible way to enjoy it!

I organised this tour for my friend's stag do. It was so much better than I could have ever imagined.
After meeting at the old silk mill, we went around 6 real ale pubs (in our own mini bus) of which some have their own micro breweries! We were provided with beer themed snacks in each place. We were also in a private area/room of each pub we visited which allowed us all to chat about the history of the pubs and enjoy sharing private stories and jokes.
The hosts were perfect! They joined in with is and helped to make it a memorable (not for the stag after all the ale!) night.
We had 2 girls in our group, so instead of ale, we had a variety of ciders to choose from.
I would highly recommend this tour for everyone, even those who don't drink ale. It is the most fun way to spend an evening

We started this tour as 10 friends and by the end we had added another 2 to our company-Pip and Elle! Pip and Elle were the perfect hosts and guides. The tour was well organised and included 6 great venues,there were many tasty treats of the liquid and foody variety!I couldn't recommend this tour enough,to ale fans and folks just looking for a great experience.

I should have written a review of this fantastic tour before. Why didn't I? Back in June, ten of us went on Pip and Elaine's tour and, without exception we all had a brilliant time. I have never had such positive feedback from any trip I have organised.
We met at the Old Silk Mill and from there were transported by mini bus around six of Derby's best real ale pubs, sampling our own choice of beer in each (a half in each pub is included in the tour price.) The tour also included an informative visit and talk at a micro-brewery and a selection of food - my favourite being the beer brownies. Pip and Elaine were superb hosts and our evening was rounded off splendidly at the Exeter Arms.
Since we went on our tour two of my friends have subsequently organised their own evenings and I can ot recommend Derby Real Ale Tours highly enough to anyone even remotely interested in real ale, food and good pubs. I'd book quickly whilst you can still get in.

A friend of mine organised a brewery tour through Real Ale tours Derby run by husband and wife team, Pip and Elaine Tel. There were 10 of us and I was the only female. The tour began at the Grundy Arms with a plater of freshly cooked chips and tomato relish made by Elaine using a local beer. We visited a total of 6 quirky and welcoming hostelries, many of which I did not know existed. There was also a very informative and interesting tour of one of Derby's micro breweries. At each stop Elaine provided delicious treats to accompany our half of real ale. One memorable moment was eating Elaines's own freshly baked beer bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar in the "secret" garden at the Roditch Arms accompanied of course by an excellent beer (of your choice).
En route Pip provided us with interesting history about Derby and the brewing industry and people he knows from the area.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and well worth the price we paid. The mini bus provided to transport the group between pubs was an excellent touch and added to the party atmosphere. Although I was the only female on this particular tour, I would thoroughly recommend the tour to all beer and food lovers. Thanks for a very special evening.
