Milestones Museum is a Living History experience laid out entirely under cover which is rather unusual but , obviously , this makes the attraction a good option to visit on a wet or a just generally unpleasant day. The whole Museum is housed within what feels like a giant Aircraft Hangar.
We actually visited on a fairly decent weather day & I have to admit that we chose a day in the week that schools had just returned after the Christmas break figuring , correctly as it happened , that there would be no school party visit.
If this sounds somewhat grumpy I can only say that in the past many a museum visit in the past has been spoiled by children tearing around & making a lot of noise without any apparent interest in the exhibits. Not their fault - those in charge.
On entering the museum you have the ticket counter , toilets , gift shop & cafe & then you descend via stairs or a lift to the exhibition which features shops , business's , vehicles & other exhibits all relevant to Hampshire & the Basingstoke area laid out in streets paved in cobbles & brick. Some of the shops & business's are open for you to enter & browse the goods inside.
A very nice surprise was the pub which opens for a couple of hours , serving local beer which we enjoyed whilst a lady bashed out old tunes on a piano.
No particular period of history is adhered to so expect mainly late Victorian through to the 1960's.
At the very rear of the exhibition is a good selection of motorised vehicles produced by Thorneycroft who were a big employer in Basingstoke for many decades. Here we were able to watch a very interesting video featuring an actor portraying the founder of Thorneycroft delivering a history of the company.
We also enjoyed the selection of pier arcade machines , some of which you can play by cashing in some modern currency for old pennies.
There is plenty here to amuse & interest children but I suspect many adults derive a lot of pleasure from seeing produce & machinery from their childhood & youth.
The cafe is large & clean & serves snacks , cakes , sandwiches & drinks. Also some hot meals & pies at certain times. The choice of these is limited & if you are vegan be warned ; for you it is either jacket potato with 3 bean chilli or nothing.
Having said that , it was very decent & came with salad.
Counter service was a bit on the slow side despite hardly any visitors & I would be concerned about this if visiting on a busy day.
Toilets very clean.

I usually visit transport museums but as this has a lot of old vehicles, I thought I'd give it a go. Living history museums are usually outdoors but this one is in a large indoor setting. Whilst this does slightly spoil the travelling back in time effect, it does mean you don't have to worry about the weather.

It's surprisingly large and it was a lot of fun to explore. The settings are well done with lots of shop sets and other settings to see including industrial displays. Most things are locally themed and on the edges there are also some more traditional museum type displays about the local history including things like Basingstoke canal.

A couple of the commercial buildings, the sweet shop and the pub actually sell items. The pub is as expected but the sweet shop is used by buying a ration card when you arrive at the museum. This can then be stamped for some sweets. This si aimed at kids but it's still fun if you're a big kid!

There are lots of interesting old vehicles parked around the streets and in one of the factory buildings so I found plenty to keep me happy although I found myself just as interested in the things I wasn't there specifically to see.

It has an excellent if slightly pricey gift shop and a nice restaurant where I had a great fish and chips. (I'm always happy if a museum serves fish and chips.)

My only downside on the day I visited was several classes of school children visiting. It did mean I spent the whole time playing "dodge the children" and I wasn't able to see the "40's rooms" attraction as the schools seemed to be using that as their base. It might be helpful if the museum could put on their website when they might be busy with schools so other visitors can choose a quieter day.

It wasn't enough to spoil my day though and other than that I loved the place, I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in any aspect of social history.

We realised it had been five years since we first visited Milestones Museum in Basingstoke so on a slightly dismal sunday we ventured out again to see what was new, what had changed since our last visit and whether it still captured our imaginations.

As ever, the first thing you'll notice about Milestones is the friendly staff who are only too willing to help with any queries. Though the price of entry had risen quite a bit since our last visit it was still pretty reasonable for a family of three (two adults, one teen).

Working our way around I was delighted to see some new features in the pier area, retro arcade games from my youth - amazingly all still working and just as fun (brutally hard) to play as they were when I was the same age as my daughter. One piece of advice though, make sure you get ready to catch your coins when you play Frogger as my 50 whizzed straight through the machine and went straight down the gap between the pier boards! DOH!

The penny arcade is also good fun with a chance of winning a prize if you're particularly skilled.

Most of the museum is devoted to recapturing the look and feel of old Basingstoke as it would have been around the turn of the 20th century, with lots of old shops and some great exhibits themed for each type of store. The toy store and teddy collection were new since our last visit and we were pleased to see the old sweet shop is still doing a roaring trade in retro style sweets, available via your ration book!

Half way through our visit we started getting hungry so checked out the Rooftoppers cafe. Most reviews here seem to be a bit 'meh' on the cafe but we found it to have an excellent selection of sandwiches, cakes and pasties with some reasonably priced fish and chips as well. The cafe staff were absolutely awesome, friendly and chatty and service was brisk on a fairly busy sunday lunchtime. I had to try the locally made mince pies - yes, they are as good as everyone says they are!

The museum has a real vibe to it, a great little gift shop, recently renovated (and sparkling clean) loos, and lots to see and do. We spent about 2 ½ hours in the museum with an hour or so in the cafe for lunch and thought it was a really good day out.

Brilliantly done museum showing life before and after the 1st Word War. It's all inside so no worries about getting wet. Street scenes, shops, old vehicles, its a mine of old equipment, old radios, old cameras etc. Beautifully laid out and with an excellent audio guide. Very good cafe and really helpful staff. Not sure how beneficial would be to young children but we loved it.

Surprisingly packed full of exhibits, worth a two hour wonder through. Would have been better with the handheld guides but no one on the desk to give them out. Went back a couple of times but still no one there.
Wondered around and read all the information which was very informative.

Visited for the first time during half term, with my Granddaughter. The weather was awful, making this indoor attraction doubly attractive, although you easily forgot you were indoors due to the very high roof, and outstanding life sized houses and exhibits.

The attention to detail for the vast majority of the exhibits was very good.

The "Pier exhibit" was somewhat poorer, and was the first thing we saw.

The restaurant, despite arriving early to eat, was not overly busy, but the staff and service was glacially slow. Next time will avoid that service.

A lovely museum with plenty to see and plenty to reminisce about. A couple of school parties of young children were racing around - no problem with children being there - it's important that they are - but teachers do need to be aware of other visitors too.

It was surprisingly quiet once the school parties had gone and whilst there was lots of information around, perhaps some volunteer guides would have been a great addition to suppliment the information on the walls and information boards.

Loved the idea of the ration card and sweet shop but unfortunately the price of the sweets and gifts in the shop was really prohibitive.

The food was nice but the service was very lackadaisical,

Overall a very enjoyable visit, just attention to a few details would make it better.

We absolutely loved this. The attention to detail all around the attraction was so good. I particularly liked the birds by the train. I also loved the back yard of the house with the little surprise! We were very impressed and will definitely visit again.

We were able to borrow a wheelchair for my brother who has difficulty walking and this was very much appreciated. We all enjoyed our time here as displays were mainly easily accessible with wide walkways, lift and disabled toilet. It is a lovely quiet museum, but with a lot to keep everyone interested, children and adults. We liked the pub, sweet shop and pier amusements particularly. There is also a good shop and restaurant and plenty of parking. I would give 5 stars as generally excellent but would just like to mention a couple of hopefully constructive criticisms .We didnt find out about ration book until too late and also noone around to give us audio tour equipment. We tried a few dud ones first from counter, so it took a while! Also restaurant quite tight for wheelchair access between tables and large blackboard menu not seen until we had already ordered as it wasn't facing queue. Overall though a good day out whatever the weather.
