I found this shop to be an Aladdin's Cave of goods for sewing, knitting and handicrafts. The staff were friendly and helpful. I noticed that they also hold workshops on various topics.

As a group of quilters from Oxfordshire we decided to hire a small coach and go to Threads and Patches as one of their "days out". Sally the owner made us very welcome and coffee and cake were there when we arrived. There were several demonstrations that were really good and then a hearty lunch was provided. We then had plenty of time to shop before the coach came to pick us up. A great time was had by all and I'm sure that more than one of us will be back. I certainly will to pick up my "Stuff your Stocking". Thanks Sally and her team.

after reading a review about this workshop I am wondering whether I attended the same class .The title "funky birds " should give you a clue that this was a class to use your imagination and not to be spoon fed instructions so we all produced the same item. The tutor helped all the class when asked but allowed us to be as creative as we wished,it was my opinion that everyone enjoyed the day and I certainly heard no complaints as to the teaching or the content of the class. Surely if you have a complaint or query as to the teaching or the service being provided the time to raise it is at the time and not afterwards when nobody can do anything to rectify the" so called" problems.I can certainly say I that I WAS TOTALLY HAPPY WITH THECONTENT AND THE TEACHING on this course and can personally say that everyone was made very welcome at this workshop

My friend and I booked a course to make Funky Felt Birds which we were so looking forward too. I am afraid that both of us were disappointed. Although we created something nice and birdlike, it was more or less down to our own try it and see and being able to use the specialist skills we both have. There was very little actual tuition, we were told, 'i do it like this' 'or just cut a triangle'...whereas usually a workshop is hands on with small demos, or at least some guidelines on pattern, so it fits. A very expensive workshop when you are not actually shown demostration techniques.
Also there was no welcome introduction from the tutor, to tell us how she came to create these birds, no direction to tell us to help ourselves to refreshments, and we had to go find the toilet for ourselves. I realise most of the class all knew each other, and knew the tutor and knew the ropes, but there were a few of us who were there for the first time and felt very left out.
It did feel more like a Saturday social meet than a well organised tutored workshop. Very poor value for money.
Course was from 10.30-4.30 but with visitors who came in from the shop who were regulars then came into the work space to see friends that were taking part....was an uncomfortable feeling for us new bees...felt like we should pack up early and go home...

Firstly I want to say I am really sorry you did not enjoy your day with us. We pride ourselves on making our customers welcome and I hate the idea that you did not feel part of the Threads and Patches community while you were here
I feel many of your concerns were my personal failure, it was unfortunate that I was away, as I usually introduce any visiting tutor and do the health and safety and food and drink information giving as part of that. It is my fault you did not get a proper introduction to the shop as I had omitted to arrange this with one of my staff before going on holiday.
The Tutor has taught this class before and it has been very well received, I have already had a further 5 requests for it to be repeated.
I have spoken to the Tutor and almost all the other members of the class - I was unable to contact one lady
It appears your view of the day is almost completely at odds with everyone else s
These are emails and comments I have had from other participants
' we had a wonderful day, I was thrilled with my bird, Zanna is a brilliant teacher'
Hi Sally,I had a lovely day and was very happy with my funky bird. I was a complete novice and received the help and advice I needed to make a nice product. I am looking forward to doing a similar workshop on insects
Hi Sally, It was fine, I really enjoyed it. If anyone had asked for more help, I'm sure Zanna would have given it. I think most people hadn't met Zanna before (not apparent to me that anyone had). Everyone produced at least one cool-looking bird, and those two ladies made super ones that everyone admired! There was at least one other person who didn't know anyone (Rachel, who was sitting beside me), who got on fine. I can't say exactly what was said at the very beginning, because I arrived at 10.31 and everyone was already getting on with stuff as Zanna had started people off who were all there a while ahead of time (so they got extra time free!). Marcia made tea for everyone. Zanna brought spare wire and toy stuffing which she gave away cheerily, and was just there and reachable. Zanna was there through the whole day and told anyone anything they asked, as well as mentioning as we went along what we needed to do. It was fine.
Your workshops are a very good price indeed compared to anywhere else.
Hi Sally When the class started everyone was huddled around looking at the birds, and discussions were in full swing before all we're present. I do not remember intros were done, and general housekeeping ie toilets and fire etc missed, so newcomers were not recognised at the start. There were books to get ideas from and plenty of paper to draw out designs, I think that there was enough instructions to achieve a good bird either hand or machine sewn.
There was a lot of general chatter, especially about teaching in today's schools, which got a bit annoying. But we all sewed away. I left early as I was so tired and finished my bird, so did not wait till the end of the day.Perhaps the price was a bit steep, but I enjoyed the class, being different and not patchwork. Unfortunately you cannot please everyone every time
Hi Sally I have given a great deal of thought to what happened on the course and want to be fair to both sides of the issue. In typical fashion we all arrived at different times and then some drifted off to the shop once they had set themselves up.There were several of us who had attended other courses together and obviously we all greeted each other and started talking. I cannot remember at which point the people in question came in but they went to sit at the table by the sink.To be fair the beginning was very casual and we didn't have a "housekeeping" introduction but Xanna did talk to us about her birds she had a selection with her to show us, she discussed basic shapes, positioning of legs, using the wire and provided us with paper to draw bird shapes and books to look through for ideas At this point we all started drawing making patterns or whatever we wanted to do to begin and Xanna walked around the room checking that we were all happy. The people in question began very quickly and seemed to be happy to get on with it Xanna was working with individuals as they asked for help, she also gathered us together to demonstrate the making and positioning of the legs, sewing them together, making wings, tails and headpieces. Drinks were made at some point and I do remember one of them asking where the toilet was and several of us directed her (just as I was told on my first visit).
I don't think any of us had met Xanna before she did do an introduction of the work, but we did not introduce ourselves formally though we were all willing to talk to and introduce ourselves as we went along
It was a Saturday social/sociable group but they made no attempt to join in, and while I probably didn't learn any new needlework skills I learned how to make funky birds, I had a very pleasant day and went home satisfiedI hope this helps you. I have tried to be fair I enjoyed the course and did something new. I will go to another of Xanna's courses. It met my expectations
The Tutor saw the day from this point of view
I'm really sorry to hear anyone didn't like the day and didn't feel part of it, but this is how i thought the session went...
Most arrived early, I offered them the choice of spaces, and the 2 concerned immediately went to the window seats, people got out their materials, I showed people the wire that I used, everyone seemed to have suitable stuff, I said everyone was welcome to use mine if they wanted to. I did introduce my birds, said how I came to do the drawings and the 3d birds grew out of the embroidered/ applique ones, Showed some of the initial drawings, showed the artists I had referred to and spoke of how I developed them. I then described how I designed the shapes and suggested that the best way was to draw basic bird silhouettes and then expand using gussets. By this time it seemed that everyone had shown a considerable level of understanding of the skills, the 2 concerned included. Once the ideas had started to be drawn, everyone was at very different stages, so I went round seeing how they were doing and offering help if wanted.
Teas and coffees were made by one of the course ladies- I've forgotten her name, sorry- who offered and obviously did it regularly. Directions to the toilets were given, no i didn't actually show them, obviously I should have.
During the morning everyone seemed fine, both ideas and the making.
As regards demos, I showed individuals how I made parts when they wanted to make those parts, discussed different sewing methods and how to solve problems. I didn't do a big "how to" for each stage - machine stitchers were working at such a different rates to the hand stitchers.
Right at the end, I was aware that one lady had stopped sewing, but she said she wanted to continue at home as she had crystals and such to go on working on it. Not a word of wanting anything different during the session, didn't want to try designing a different one.
Various people wandered in, one was someone new to the area, and several had a chat about how it would be great if she signed up for a basic session and just joined in, and 3 came to see a fried and to talk to her about the big shiny machines they had just bought(!). 1 or 2 simply put their heads round the corner.
As they left, I asked if they might be interested in other courses and she said it was just a day out, and they tried lots of different things on these days out..
I'm really sorry they didn't enjoy it- and that they felt strongly enough to post the comment, but not strongly enough to say anything on the day, I would have worked with them differently had I known! I would have been a lot more formal and 'teachery' with power points, handouts and patterns if I thought that was what people wanted. I should have spotted them earlier and targeted them for more stuff.
So looking at all these responses and your complaints are a little difficult to reconcile.
1.it appears you were expecting something more formal and 'teachery' as Zanna describes it, however, this was a design class as well as a making one, so allowing everyone to create in their own way without being too prescriptive would usually be the approach. I believe the tutor did offer advice and help at each stage, and it is clear from the results that everyone made a bird of which they were proud. Ultimately the responsibility for getting the most out of a class must lie with the student, the tutor can provide information and be available to help. Our policy at Threads and Patches is 'bleed the teacher dry' , ask anything you need and they will help you
2. although the basic traditional introductions were not done, for which I have already apologised and explained why. All the information was given to you when you needed it, I presume you were given drinks, found and used the toilet and would have been guided to an emergency exit if such a need had arisen.
3. Chatting in the class is what many people come to a class for, it is not only a learning but a social event also. I believe people asked about your lives and you talked about your art. When the conversation no longer suited you you asked people to stop, I think this is completely sensible, but the subject matter is dictated by the students as much as by the tutor and I am sorry if it was not to your taste, but you could always join in and steer things in another direction
4. Re customers popping in to classes - this is a difficult one, we have always encouraged customers to look at what is happening in the workshop, partly to encourage them to join classes but also as an encouragement to students as invariably the work is greatly admired (as the birds were I believe) I have always loved the way our customers all talk to each other and show interest in each others work. However I don't think customers should interrupt a class just to chat with a friend. getting the balance right here is difficult and takes gentle management, as Zanna is not a regular teacher she would not have been able to police this perhaps as well as our shop tutors, however, I get the impression your work was lovely so why you should feel uncomfortable about people looking at it I have difficulty understanding
5. You made no complaint at all on the day other than asking people to change the talk topic. No one was aware that you had any problems, concerns or difficulties. When you stopped sewing you did not say, 'I'm feeling really frustrated by the class' you said you planned to finish it at home with embellishments you had there. You gave the tutor no opportunity on the day to modify her behaviour towards you, you did not say 'I was expecting a more formal session'. Our teachers are good, but they are not mind readers, and in an adult class if you do not express your concerns at the time so they can be immediately addressed, how can they be resolved? You then choose to publicly condemn rather than seek a collaborative resolution to your concerns, and it is clear that your complaints were not felt or realised by anyone else in the room on the day.
6. The pricing of our classes is competitive and similar to many other comparable establishments. Many of the class had purchased a Workshop Passport which reduced the price by half. You were offered tuition throughout the day, you created a nice project and made no objection at the time. In the light of this I do not feel a refund is appropriate. However as you felt you did not get enough teaching, next time we hold the same class you are welcome to join it free of charge, this is not transferrable to anyone else. I shall inform you by email next time the class is to be held and you will be made very welcome and Zanna will of course offer you all the attention you need
I am very proud of the classes we run here, although I am never complacent and will review our practices re the welcome introduction and the management of visitors in the classroom. Thank you for taking the time to inform me of your concerns. I hope you will take up the offer of the free class and come and join in
Kind regards
SallyWhite

What a lucky find! There we were cruising up the canal when we arrived at Fenny Stratford for a lunch stop & on the way back from the pub, espied Threads & Patches, a veritable Aladdin's Cave. Such friendly helpful staff, a warm welcome and all the goodies you could need. I even signed up for a workshop on Free Motion Quilting being held the next morning. Such fun with easy instruction and delivered with humour by Sally. A must visit, you'll love it I'm sure.

Threads and Patches is a great place for quilting fabric as and accessories. I went in the other day just to stop and de stress. I bought fabric and the motivation was thrown in for free! All the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. And they help if you are stuck on colour choices. Loads of natural daylight too. And tea and coffee is available. I left there feeling happy and relaxed.

This should be your first stop for sewing craftwork. The quilting on show is fabulous and they have classes teaching "newbies" how to. The choice of materials is extensive plus of course the accessories required. You are welcome, from your first visit, by very friendly folk who are only too happy to advise you - the true shop "advisor". Do try the cafe, this is great if going to a class or your visit is at the end of a shopping day. There is a very large car park to the back of the shop, entrance is off Watling Street and not by the commercial units. Happy Sewing!

Hi Sharon,
thank you for such a lovely review, you are right! We are always trying to do something new or interesting for our customers and we love the 'buzz' of a busy shop. It is really important to us that we support the customers in achieving their crafting goals, the more successful outcomes the more you sew, right? We love sewing as much as anyone could and just relish the opportunity to share that with our creative customers. Thank you for a great review and happy sewing!

Had a really fun day in a Free Motion Sewing Class.
As a person who can only just manage to thread a machine and no sewing experience I didn't know what to expect but didn't need to worry as instruction was good by Sally who got us off to a prompt start and assisted us when in trouble. This class was suitable for all levels and it was fun to see what creations others came up with. It was a full day and the class seemed enthralled with their work. Can't wait to get my machine out again.
