The gardeners are doing a wonderful job to maintain and improve Cheslyn Gardens. You could visit every week and see something different. Right now - early February are snowdrops, crocus, witchhazel, wintersweet with the hellebores and winter jasmine just coming along.
It takes about an hour to wander around, but you can easily stay longer and relax. There are several birdfeeders an its a good spot to see woodland birds - nuthatches, woodpeckers, treecreepers, goldcrests as well as more common robins, blue tits, great tits etc.
By the entrance are large lawns with mature trees; behind the house is a formal pond and rockery. Continue through the rockery to find the flowering witchhazels. The woodland area at the back of the garden has many early spring flowering shrubs - wintersweet, winterjasmine & camellias, which are only just starting.
On the practical side there are no refreshments and the house/ greenhouse are not open. There is a toilet for visitors to use. The gardens are open till 5pm in February.

Visited with my kids. They had an amazing time here as we went for picnic. It was scenic, quiet and just a lovely time overall.

Although a very hot summer, garden was still interesting with plenty of variety. A quiet, serene place in which to wander. Took us around 30 minutes.

A true hidden gem. A very pleasant surprise in the heart of Watford. Tranquil setting with enough things of interest to keep anyone happy for an hour or two.

Hidden treasure of Nature and wildlife. This park is a must for any locals or visitors who have an interest in flowers and wildlife or are simply looking for a spot to relax. There is a pond with some lovely fish and frogs, rare birds are kept and there are many floral displays. On top of this there are benched and quite spots throughout which makes it perfect for a lunch walk or reading your books.

A quiet unobtrusive house and gardens in a residential area of Watford. Blink and you will miss the small sign to the car park, we did! Free entry and parking with only access to the toilet. The gardens are well laid out and maintained, with beautiful flowering plants and shrubs. There are lots of exotic plants among the well established trees, with dirt paths to meander around. Take a picnic and sit out in the gardens on one if the many benches, enjoy the fresh air and birdsong. There is a small pond teaming with goldfish and larger carp for you to enjoy.

Lovely gardens with plenty of beautiful plants and flowers plus an Avery and fish pond. There are many paths to follow to enjoy the wooded area behind the open garden area. Very relaxing and well worth a visit. With limited parking, going by foot might be preferable.

A little gem in my home town of Watford , beautiful gardens open to the public within walking distance of the town centre or only a 5 minute drive . Easily spend an hour or 2 wondering around with the added delight of an aviary and a pond with fish .

The gardeners at Cheslyn do a wonderful job in keeping the gardens in such good condition with lots to see all year around. At the end of February it is full of colour with the snowdrops still out, heather, cyclamens and hellebores (Christmas rose). The early daffodils and camellias are just starting. The highlight though are the drifts of crocus near the entrance and in the woodland. There are some more formal areas including a pond and flower beds and beyond is more natural woodland area. Do take a moment to see the birds coming and going to the feeder. Usual woodland birds - chaffinches, coal tit, great tit - but we were lucky to also see some Siskin. You can easily spend an afternoon here but to look around thoroughly takes about an hour. There are plenty of benches to sit on and relax (and a toilet for visitors to use).

I am quite worried about parking there. Is there any near alternative in case if main parking is full?

Cassiobury Park and Watford Junction Station car park are both a 5min drive way. Would then be a 25min walk over though. :/ If you get to Cheslyn House before 11am you should get a parking space fine.
Hello, do you hire the house and gardens out for events at all? I live locally and love the gardens so looking forward to hearing back from you.

Hi, the gardens are run by the council, it would be worth asking them, another answer below has their number. However we live opposite and can’t recall them being used for a private function for at least the last 10 years. It’s a lovely venue and it would be nice to see it used more. Good luck. Cheers Kevin

Not sure there is a cafe, we went on a weekend day. The house was not open when we visited, maybe only used for wedding function etc? The garden is nice and compact, with a play area for children. The wood walking area is good and a bit hidden surprise.
Went by car, so don't know public transport directions. Good local park I would say but not very big quite small, only good for picnic for a few hours not whole day. A tiny escape!

Yes - it's a small park/large garden, and we have taken our own picnic. Not all parks need to be huge, and this is part of the charm of visiting somewhere like this, which may provide inspiration for you to create your own dream garden to escape into. That's the point.
