On arrival we were told that a film crew were on site and areas may be closed off.
Given, 3 months earlier, I had paid £120.00 for an animal experience, I was abit shocked.

Film crew everywhere.
Loud, and one person, very abusive and foul mouthed to his camera crew.
Lucky my son was older or I would have to bring his foul mouth to tow

Lenny Henry Film to be seen. Three Birds.

Back to the Zoo Staff.

Very Knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.

Loved the tickle the Tapier Experience.
Staff very helpful, especially Esme.

Lemurs absolutely beautiful and feeding the beautiful parakeets and exotic birds were amazing.
The Zoo was very clean and parking very easy.

Me and my husband visited the zoo in November 2022. Good enclosures and animals looked very well looked after.
The downsides are that there were a lot of closed off areas and couldn't see many of the animals due to a lot of cleaning taking place. I feel that the cleaning should of been done outside of visitor hours so animals are seen better.
Personally didn't like that face masks are mandatory in some of the areas either, especially for lemur wood with it being outside.
Will probably visit again but would be when its a bit warmer in the summer.

A fantastic day out with my family on a sunny October half term day.

We visited the BCLM and then the zoo in consecutive days and much preferred the latter (see my other review on Black Country Living Museum).

I’d read mixed reviews about the zoo so wasn’t quite sure what to expect. We loved it and spent over 6 hours there. I’d describe it as charming with the compact site ideal for us with 2 small children. The castle and vintage chair lift elevated it from other zoos we’ve visited. Great to clamber to the top of the keep for views over Dudley and read about the history. A nice little fairground at the bottom was a bonus too.

Lots of variety with the animals present including some we haven’t seen before. Highlights were the chimps, Pygmy marmosets and meerkats.

Took part in an amazing big cat experience with Ed. Zoo is perfect and the whole day brilliant, worth every penny. The hilly layout makes for interesting enclosures, Orang-utan babies visible. Tigers were incredible - awesome but gentle.

We have been annual pass holders for the last couple of years and very much support the zoo and are regular visitors.

Today my children took part in the junior zoo keeper experience. Both of them had a lovely day with some interactive and feeding activities. It was a lovely experience for them and is reasonably priced - especially for 2 children. The tapir part was their favourite. My daughter has previously done the junior keeper experience before and she had a photo taken with a tapir which was sent to us with a magnetic frame. Shame this doesn’t happen any more but they still enjoyed the tapir meet (albeit it a shorter experience).

The worst bit is the restaurant which does not offer value for money. I would recommend taking your own picnic - nice to sit in the castle courtyard to eat.

Dudley Zoo is in nice grounds with the added interest of the castle. There have been lots of improvements over the years and this year has seen some new enclosures for the some animals. Definitely worth a visit.

There are some good days out in Dudley - shame they don’t combine with the other attractions to offer a combined value ticket including the Zoo, BCLM and the canal.

Fantastic day at the zoo, I have not been for many years but I found the variety of animals and the quality of their enclosures was high. The animals looked relaxed and in really good condition. The site can be challenging for people with mobility issues. It is very steep in parts but lots of seats to recover. The restaurants were good and the toilets clean and well maintained. The staff engaged well with the public and were very informative. A really positive experience.

I went here with my fiancée and had the most wonderful day.

It was pretty cool to go on a chair lift to enter the zoo!

We have visited many zoos, sanctuaries and rescues and I have to say that this zoo is a pretty good one.

Majority of the enclosures were absolutely fantastic, lots of enrichment for the animals and clearly a lot of thought, time and effort has been put into building them.

The keepers that we spoke to were all very friendly and knowledgeable which is always a good thing….. clearly they genuinely care for the animals that they have at this zoo.

The castle was incredible. I love historical buildings so to see this at an establishment that has animals was just wonderful for me!! Sadly we didn’t get time to see the entire castle though.

The only negatives that I have for Dudley zoo is the fact that there are barely any signs which resulted in us getting lost at the end of the day. The maps you get are rubbish and very confusing. Not clear at all. This needs to be addressed as we felt most of our visit was wasted on trying to work out where we needed to be so it was a very expensive visit to walk around some of the same areas more than we needed too……

Another negative is that some of the lovely old buildings that are situated there are not being used. Understandably, some are listed but it would be so nice to see sone being used such as maybe the kiosk’s.

I would definitely recommend a visit but maybe allow longer than you may generally allow in case you get lost!!

There’s lots of negativity around Dudley zoo which I think is unfair. Lots moaning about condition of buildings/enclosures etc, fail to realise that a lot of it is Grade II Listed and therefore not much can be done about it. Granted a few bits look tired, but I think the main goal for the zoo is to ensure the well-being and happiness of the animals is taken care of, and all of the keepers seem to work their hardest to ensure this is the case.
The animals are happy and healthy. Yes some seem bored, this would be due to the fact they aren’t in the wild and having to fend for themselves in order to survive. They are living a much safer and; for most of them, a much LONGER life than expected in the wild. The point of a zoo is conservation of endangered species (which are likely to be poached or killed in the wild) if we try and look at it from this point of view, then maybe then we won’t see the animals as being ‘bored’ (some of the animals are older than most of the people attending. To keep tropical species alive for so long is a brilliant thing!)

The orangutans (especially Benjamin) are characters, and seem to love sitting and staring at their paying visitors. I find we shouldn’t judge them as being bored. He seems to love looking at the strange folk staring back at him through the window.

Whilst I do sometimes feel sorry for animals in captivity (and remind myself that most of them know no different) it’s nice to see animals looking healthy (not overweight) and having access to food (some die of starvation in the wild) and enrichment… I think Dudley Zoo are doing the best at their game.

We’ve just had 2 very incredibly hard years for businesses, and unfortunately this continues… I think a lot of improvements are being delayed due to this and assume Zoo’s have been heavily affected. Our admission means everything to conservation and zoological places.

Staff are always lovely and informative, the castle ruins offer a great view of the otherwise drab side of the Midlands, facilities clean, refreshments plenty. Animals amusing!

We got annual passes so we can visit any time. Bargain!

Thanks DZAG

We visited on a weekday, and the Zoo was pretty empty, which was perfect for us. You can tell the animals are impeccably well looked after, and the talks are very informative. It's such a shame there are so few penguins, although it was so lovely seeing them.

On Friday 16 September my wife and I were lucky enough to book a free evening visit to the grounds of Dudley Castle as part of the annual Heritage Open Days. I first visited 62 years ago and it was a joy to return. The guide we met was a fount of knowledge who really brought the history of the place to life for us especially the exhibits in the Undercroft. We were only visiting the castle but on the walk up it was possible to see the owls, kookaburras and meerkats.
