Lovely house and interesting, beautiful, gardens - well worth a visit.
Friendly and well-informed volunteers - especially Margaret (who worked there, many years ago) and Robert.

I found the whole experience a poignant and compelling one. The volunteers were all very knowledgeable and I was lucky enough to speak with one of the conservators at some length about the challenges that the team faces. Moving outside, the gardens are truly wonderful. Quirky (do see the pet cemetery) and laid out on several levels. A lot seems to have been packed into a relatively small area. The topiary in particular is very special. One can only marvel at the resources and effort that it has taken to restore and maintain them. Well worth the visit.

Lovely 2-3hrs here. Very interesting property and beautiful gardens.
The house particulalry the stairs could do with a dusting and sweep along the skirting boards. There were a couple of dead flies. National Trust properties really do keep on top of this stuff and this English Heritage property could do with a little more care. Having said that, spectacular marble carvings, informative photos and staff in the rooms are most welcoming and informative willing to chat.
The cafe was well priced and lovely food and drinks. Good service.
Now, in the gardens.....i did see the back-end of a dog walking across the path a few yards in front of me on another path. I quickly went to look and it was gone and no shrubbery to hide in or anything. Was close to the house. I am convinced it must have been a ghost. Dogs are not permitted on site at all. It just disappeared into thin air. Will remember that forever.

Well, first they seized our balls and from then it got worse...
When we first arrived, we were somewhat surprised when they confiscated a tennis ball from one of the children in our party as balls are 'not allowed in the gardens of Brodsworth Hall'. We were rather shocked at this as we have been to a lot of stately homes and our children have never had anything confiscated before. From bad to worse, they then handed out activity sheets to the kids (as a lot of these places tend to) only Brodsworth don't give out pencils to help with the filling out of the sheets so, unless you bought a pen in the shop at £1.50 a go, the kids were unable to take part. The staff told us, 'as you can imagine, we get a lot of kids through here and so we can't really afford to hand out pencils.'
HANG ON.
You charge £19 per adult ticket and you can't afford to provide pencils?
Every other stately home we have ever been to provides a pencil with their activity sheets. Even IKEA give out free pencils as you go around.
Well, as Brodsworth was so stingy and tight, we figured that they must be spending their pencil-saving money elsewhere. Like inside the house for example.
But we were wrong.
VERY wrong.
As we walked into the house we were met by one of the staff and an overwhelming whiff of moth-eaten taxidermy. Very proudly, we were informed that Brodsworth was the only stately home in Britain which had been 'left in its original condition from whence the National Trust took it over'. And boy, they were NOT joking.
It was as if they hadn't dusted for 30 years.
The walls were stained, the paper peeling, the furniture flaking: reminiscent of Miss Havisham's attic, it was, indeed, a sorry and depressing sight. It had the sort of empty feeling of a house where someone had died and the kids hadn't had time to fight over the inheritance yet.
But, as they claimed so fervently, the house was being preserved just as it was so it was meant to look like this. It was just how the family had left it.
Only it wasn't, was it?
Because, guess what, time eats away. And 30+ years is a long time.
The National Trust bought this property in the early 90s.
Brodsworth needs something. A face-lift. Maybe. A lick of paint here and there. DEFINITELY. I do not see why the house has been allowed to get into such a dirty, depressing state. Some of the rooms are just piled with furniture in the ugliest of ways and the 'amazing and extravagant' wallpaper they tell you about is now faded and peeled.
As sure as the grandfather clock heralds the passing of time, Brodsworth Hall slowly rots away. Keeping something 'in its original state' is not possible. This house needs to be renewed and refreshed. Only then will its glorious spirit return.

A great house to walk round and some wonderful gardens to look around. This English Heritage site was well worth 2 hours and add some food at the cafe to make it 3 hours. The gardens in the summer were splendid and the house left almost as it was received by the EH is a wonderful place to see. Highly recommend visiting if in the area.

Amazing house with stunning gardens and lovely and knowledgeable staff.
We arrived on late morning on a beautiful summer day. One of the ladies at the reception noticed that my mother-in-law was struggling to walk and offered for her to be taken to the main house on a golf cart which was a lovely touch.
The house is very grand and we truly enjoyed walking around and looking at the interiors and the pictures. There was a lovely lady volunteer who knew all the stories of the family and I could have listened her all day. She was a real gem.
There are very interesting trails for the little ones inside and outside the house. The gardens are stunning, it's worth it comming just to walk around the gardens and breathe in the flower scents.
There is a playground, a second-hand block shop with an honesty box and a cafe.
We had a lovely day out, definitely, we will be back again!

Oh dear what a sorry mess the cafe is at this place. Beware of spending any money in there. We had an awful exxperience just trying to get a latte and capuccino. The young man, totally disinterested in serving us, said that coffee sprinkles were included in the milk (some cow that!) My husband's capuccino was just milk with no flavour whatsoever. I had a latte which tasted of nothing. If you have a cup of tea you are given a mug and a tea bag and told to put the tea bag on the table!!! Yuk! I am sure the Americans looking for British gracious living would love that! What a mess. We sat at an outside table and the next one was decorated with splats of bird poo! Joy!

This was our second visit and will definitely say it's worth spending an afternoon here.
Getting the negatives out of the way first: The house itself is grand, worth seeing but it is in VERY poor condition. There are clear signs of serious maintenance issues all over, as in huge cracks in many of the ceilings and walls, wallpaper hanging off in great chunks, huge patches of flaking and/or missing paint all over. It's a real shame as its previous grandeur is still just about evident, but it clearly needs a huge amount of money spent to restore it to anything close to its original splendour. There are also some very random, much more modern items on show and while some spark nostalgia, many are incoherently dumped together in random rooms, making them appear like someone's scruffy, neglected attic, rather than a mansion home. It left us feeling really quite sad for the place that it's been left in such a poor state.
On the plus side, the gardens are truly beautiful and surprisingly extensive - a visit here is made worthwhile by the gardens alone.
We also attended specifically for the brass band concert held in the gardens every Sunday in July and August. We took a picnic and loved every bit of our time there.
Absolutely worth a visit, just don't expect too much from the house itself.

Absolutely beautiful. I've been to most the houses and gardens in Yorkshire and thought this would be a smaller place as it doesn't seem so well advertised, but this is the best place I've visited. The gardens are amazing. Much bigger than I ingrained and a great variety, from a woodland walk, to archery border, to a fern garden, summer house garden, croquet lawn, rose gardens and the best of them all, the fountain garden. All were beautifully kept. When I visited the fountain gardens were full of Begonias but in spring it looks like they're tulip gardens. The house is so interesting too, as it tells the story of the family. Its maybe a little ostintatious, rather than homely, but that's just my taste and not a criticism. The most interesting bit of the house was the servants quarters and kitchens. The biggest and best I've seen. The cafe area was good too. The whole place is a must visit if you like stately homes. £16 isn't too dear either and to be honest, I'd pay that for the gardens alone. I wish it was nearer as I'd join English Heritage just to be able to go here a few times through summer.

It’s an English Heritage property so National Trust membership doesn’t count.

Are the hall and garden wheel chair friendly ?
เขียนเมื่อ 7 สิงหาคม 2019
The gardens aren’t fully wheelchair suitable. There are parts where you have to go down stairs to get to the bottom.
It’s uphill to the house and gardens on gravel type paths. It’s downhill to the church and the same steep slope back.
เขียนเมื่อ 19 สิงหาคม 2020
Can you pay just to access the gardens? Or do you have to pay for the hall as well?
เขียนเมื่อ 19 กรกฎาคม 2019
I believe the entry price now includes both hall and gardens. In the past you could buy separate tickets but looking on the English Heritage website it looks as if this is no longer the case.

Is this suitable for a 11 and 7 year old or would they find it boring
เขียนเมื่อ 3 กันยายน 2018
I think they might find indoors boring. But the gardens contain some interesting walks, wooded, some steep stone steps, sunken garden and lots of birds.

Traveling here by public transport from York. Not sure what is best to use, which stop, etc. Suggestions sincerely appreciated!
เขียนเมื่อ 27 ธันวาคม 2017
there is a bus to the village and a short walk to the entrance of the grounds it would be easier to get a taxi as others have said if you are bothered about a walk.
