Definitely to see in the city center interesting works but find only two Italian works a Rubens Santoro and a Modigliani on 4 floors of exhibition seems to me very little without taking anything away from English painters.... I knew of some Canaletto and others but nothing more......... I still recommend to those who have an hour to go there to premise that it is also Free or free offer at the exit....

The Pre-Raphaelite collection í stunning - we spent ages debating our favorites. Modern exhibitions were thought-provoking conversation starters. Lovely càé for a romantic cofee break. Not overwhelmingly large, perfect for a couple hours ò cultured wandering. Manchester's hidden treasure!

Excellent gallery with fine contemporary curation and enthusiastic staff. Easy to approach a gallery attendant as a solo traveler/art lover and ask them an occasional question. Good collection of pre raphaelites

Definitely worth a visit or two when in Manchester. Very good collection and plenty of changing exhibitions. The Valette/Lowry collection is excellent and great to see the evolution of Lowry's art from the perspective of his teacher/inspiration - make sure to check out the Lowry museum in Salford too!
As it was half term when we visited there were a few too many kids for my liking and too much space devoted to keeping them happy but if it gives them a love/appreciation of art then I guess it is worth annoying me. Great to see a fashion gallery too - often left out of art galleries but definitely belongs.

I loved this place. It's not difficult for me as I love art galleries. But it's got good art and a lot of character. I spent a long weekend in Manchester and I spent some time there three days in a row. Sappho is very cool. Just like the city.

Visited for the fourth or fifth time. Beautiful building with a good collection (including local artists Lowry and Valette) but unfortunately the collection is not as well utilised as it could be. Art is not switched out often enough and the exhibitions don’t rotate often enough either. We saw the same exhibitions (about hot drinks and fashion) which were we saw on my last visit, around 10 months ago! In the same vein, the gift shop could have a slightly more interesting selection and the cafe, whilst well situated and seeming well utilised by patrons, is haphazardly run with slow service and poor clearing of tables (noted on previous visits and demonstrated again this time). Also took up the free tour, the guide was very knowledgeable but rambled a fair bit, needed to speak up and was a times a bit ‘woke’ with their denigration of western culture. Good enough as a free art gallery and to spend a few hours, but not the hidden gem some make out!

The diverse collection of art, from classical to contemporary, kept us engaged for hours. The cozy café was perfect for a break. A fantastic cultural experience for anyone who appreciate creativity and beauty.

Free entry and free exhibitions. The gift shop and café are also cute but the galleries themselves are sometimes a bit random and not always on theme with the displays.
Nonetheless, I loved seeing a couple of greek inspired art pieces as well as the small Lowry collection.

I do like visiting when in Manchester, certainly a great free attraction. Some amazing artwork in the various halls. Coming from Wigan I was delighted to see a painting called lunch at a Wigan mill

A nice collection of mainly Victorian paintings and a relaxing refreshment area. Well worth a visit despite the building works taking place.

Walk if the weather's nice - 15 minutes top. But the tram is a wet-weather option.

No there is no fee for visiting but if you buy or donate in the box you help the gallery but it is purely voluntary hope it helps enjoy
