Smashing afternoon tea with the Tintwistle brass band at Clayton Hall last Sunday. Had a wonderful time, band were perfect, the cream tea was delicious, all the volunteers were lovely. Such a great atmosphere, sat outside in the garden and the weather held, we were so lucky.
Lovely place. Inside the hall is so interesting and fun, really cannot fault the experience.
Highly recommend lovely Clayton Hall.

A small manor house not far from the Etihad Stadium. Although I have lived in Manchester almost my whole life, I had never been here before, but as they had an open day I decided to visit. Admission is completely free, That itself is rare these days. Some of the rooms are kitted out with period furniture so you have a good idea of what they would have looked like in (roughly) Victorian times. One room contains resources relating to local history that you can examine.
One of the volunteers gave us a short but interesting talk about the history of the hall - the site goes back to early medieval times and is surrounded by a (dry) moat. There is a small cafe, with a limited but very reasonably priced choice of refreshments.
The hall will probably not occupy more than an hour or two of your time but it is well worth a look. You could perhaps combine it with one of the other local attractions in your programme for the day.
Parking is particularly difficult if Manchester City are playing at home (please check) but there is a very handy tram stop 'Clayton Hall' on the Ashton tram route, which is perhaps the best way to get there. You can also use buses which stop close by, just outside the Hall in fact.

This should be a much bigger attraction in Manchester due to its historic significance, unfortunately it looks very sad and in need of a massive cash boost. The grounds need to be totally redesigned and excessive foliage removing in order to highlight the building, moat etc. Staff are very mixed, some very helpful and friendly, some very abrasive and rude. Very disappointed with selection on offer in the cafe. I would suggest an urgent bid for Lottery (or similar) funding to save this important Manchester site.

Me and my son visited and had lots of fun immersing ourselves into history. The Museum has something for everyone no matter their age. The staff were brilliant and very approachable and informative answering all our questions and teaching us new things you can tell it is a passion for all who volunteer here. It was great to be able to touch, be involved and look at everything. The history talk is really interesting and inspired us to look into other aspects of history in the surrounding areas. The cafes food was lovely and reasonably priced. The Museum it self is free although you can leave donations in the collection pot. There is parking which is also easy and convenient. I did notice there was a bus stop and tram stop in close proximity.

Exceptionally warm welcome upon entry, as if we were been greeted by friends. A 45 minute history talk was presented by Jim, who spoke with passion for "his" beloved hall. We also learned about some previously unknown local history too! Just a few rooms to view, but stuffed with objects from yester year; all painstakingly sourced and collected by the incredible volunteer team.
The homemade quiche and cake were beyond delicious and all served with a smile. Prices are extremely reasonable.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and our visit has left us with fond memories of the place. My respect and warm wishes remain with this wonderful volunteer team who've put a considerable amount of love, devotion and time into maintaining a part of our heritage.

Many thanks for your very kind words about my talk and also about our truly incredible volunteer team - without them, the whole experience would be much less colourful and interesting. I'm glad you enjoyed the quiche (and, of course, the cake!). Next time you come, I recommend the homemade vegetable soup.

I can't express how much my friend and I enjoyed spending our time exploring this charming piece of English history, nestled in a tranquil part of the vibrant city of Manchester. We felt that we were amongst friends from the moment we arrived.
Jim gave a 45 minute talk which encapsulated both the history of the hall, its key personalities plus pertinent threads of local/national history.
The rooms have been lovingly decorated with relevant period pieces, paintakingly collected over the years by the incredible team of volunteers. The whole project of keeping our heritage alive is quite simply a labour of love by these wonderful people. Each volunteer, some very young, couldn't do enough for their visitors and are so deserving of their award status.
All the cakes, scones, quiche etc are home baked and I was told that some of the produce used comes straight from the garden. You really could taste the difference; utterly delicious. Prices were incredibly reasonable.
So, whether you're a history buff, fancy a break from modern life or just want to treat yourself to delicious quiche or cake, do please visit Clayton Hall.
Thank you again to all the beautiful volunteers for what they have and continue to do. We'll remember you all and Clayton Hall for years to come and smile when we do.

Wow! Thanks for such a really lovely review. We do love the Hall, its people (volunteers and those who lived here in times past), and showing people what it's all been about through our talks and how we dress the rooms. The cafe team always try and make great, reasonably priced food and drink for everyone. It's been our pleasure to show you Clayton Hall please come again we'd be delighted to see you!

Fantastic visit this afternoon to Clayton Hall. The talk by Jacob was great, giving an overview of the history of the Hall, and all the volunteers were so helpful and eager to explain the different rooms and items. Cafe was also very lovely, with homemade cakes and such reasonable prices! Do recommend on your trip to Manchester, or if you are even just exploring the city and you live in Manchester.

Excellent time visiting Clayton Hall. The 30-minute talk by Jacob on the history of the building was excellently delivered, and very engaging. All of the volunteers were lovely and friendly. The cafe was also great and very cheap, they could easily put their prices up slightly and it would still be great value!
Fun experience and a great way to spend an hour or so.

Fabulous time was had today with friends enjoying this historic building with its fascinating past. The volunteers clearly enjoy their work/passion. The “talk” really offers a glimpse into the past.
I would definitely recommend a visit for the yummy homemade food if nothing else! 😂 😋

Had a lovely time showing my friend around Clayton Hall. It's an amazing place, full of history and memorabilia, giving you all kinds of memories hidden in our minds.
The food in the cafe was delicious. Quiches, sandwiches, soup, and cakes are all made by the wonderful Pauline.

Hi, I'm sorry for my slow response. Yes, we are open to the public. Usually 1st and 3rd Saturday's of the month. Our last December opening is a Father Christmas event on the 15th December - although open days are free the events have a small charge for children.
As we're all volunteers we take January off and then get started back in the first Saturday in February.
