Here are five great features about the Pont-Neuf: 1) the semi-circular stone benches where you can relax, rest and watch the world go by for free; 2) the wonderful central location with views up and down the Seine; 3) the western end of Ile de la Cite which bisects the bridge -- home to the Place de la Dauphine, the majestic statue of Henry IV and the peaceful but mysterious Square de Vert Galant; 4) steps away from the Conciegerie, the Ste Chapelle and the Palais de la Cite; 5) a short walk to the Notre Dame, the Louvre and the Place St Michel.

It is easy to overlook this landmark, but don’t. When it was constructed it was as emblematic of Paris as the Eiffel Tower is today. Henry IV made sure the bridge was free of structures and had sidewalks and viewing spots so people could enjoy the river views. They still do. Take the time to enjoy its simple, elegant design.

Le pont a été construit en 1606. Guillaume Marchand, qui s'est inspiré du projet de Baptiste Androuet du Cerso, a supervisé la construction du pont. Le pont offre des vues intéressantes, qui ont été conçues à l'origine lors de sa construction.

The New Bridge

After having enjoyed beers in Le Mistral my twin brother Stephen and I walked over Pont De Change to explore Île De La Cité ,from this bridge we had a great view of one of the most famous bridges in Paris namely Pont Neuf .
Pont Neuf ( New Bridge ) is one of the oldest standing bridges in Paris crossing the River Seine ,a beautiful stone arch bridge ,232 metres long ,it's actually a two span bridge that connects the Left Bank with Île De La Cité,it's such a beautiful bridge and in France is designated a "Monument Historique " ,it's a wonderful bridge to check out if you're near Île De La Cité.

In France, there is an expression "Se porter comme le Pont Neuf" ("Look like a New bridge"). Knowing the 400-year-old age of the bridge, you will be surprised that this is a compliment. The old name is historically accidental and given at the initiator of the construction of Henry III of Valois, when this bridge was really the newest in Paris. The Valois dynasty, which disappeared in the Huguenot wars, ceded the French throne to Henry IV of Bourbon, who completed the construction in 1607. By Henry's decision, the Pont Neuf became the first bridge in Paris without houses and shops. The other bridges in Paris looked like the Ponte Vecchio in Florence or the Krämerbrücke in Erfurt. Henry's last wife Maria de' Medici ordered an equestrian statue of her husband next to the bridge, wanting to do something similar to the statue of Marcus Aurelius on Michelangelo's masterpiece Piazza Campidoglio in Rome. The statue was installed after Henry's death from the knife of the fanatic Rastignac. The current statue is the second. The original was melted down during the revolution in 1792 for cannons. Pont Neuf is considered a place of love. This reputation was reinforced by cultural figures. He was painted by Monet, Pissarro, Renoir. The famous art-house director Léos Carax dedicated his film Les Amants du Pont-Neuf to the bridge. He shot daytime scenes on the bridge, and night scenes on a replica of a bridge built in the south of France. True, the expensive entourage did not save the film about the love of homeless people and it failed at the box office.

Pont Neuf was the first stone bridge in Paris not to support houses in addition to a thoroughfare. It was also fitted with pavements to protect pedestrians from mud and horses; pedestrians could also step aside into its bastions to let a bulky carriage pass. The decision not to include houses on the bridge was made by Henry IV, who did not want to obstruct the clear view of the Louvre. It has been repaired and renovated many times, and its beauty can really be appreciated during a river cruise.
