"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as my go-to first destination upon my arrival in the area .After landing at Geneva Airport, I took the phenomenal Mountain Drop-offs directly to my exact lodging in Les Houches and two hours later, I had arrived at the Montenvers glacier overlook.
I took the Mont Blanc Express train to the central station in Chamonix and walked five minutes to the train station for Montenvers. I didn't have to wait long and boarded the train quickly and chose my seat with the view directly in front and of the driver (see my "helpful" photos). It was a slow 20 minute elevation ride, which i tolerated.
I arrived at the building and moved directly to the overlook balcony of the glacier, where I took many more "helpful" photos. I lingered there for a while- it was already 1600h of my arrival day, so there wasn't too much else to do. The ice cave was closed, and I wasn't particularly interested in that anyway, since i had visited that in 2014.
There was crowding and a line and a wait to get to the train to descend
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It was included in my Mont Blanc MultiPass

yes, but as my destination after hiking the Grand Balcon Nord from Plan de l'Aguille

It is worth it to go and see the glacier and the ice sculptures

What a wonderful ride on a cog railway from downtown Chamonix up the mountain to the Mer de Glace! At the top, we stopped at the Grand Hôtel de Montenvers for hot chocolate.

We enjoyed our day trip to Montenvers Mer De Glacé but the best part was the hiking trail. We were looking for a short trail that we could fit in our short time before catching the last Montenvers train back to Chamonix. We recommend taking the hiking route towards Plan de l’Aguille which in total is 4 hours but even just walking an hour of it is worth the time. The route overlooks the Mer De Glacé and either side of the trail are covered with summer wildflowers. Really worth the hike if you want a taste of what there is to offer but don’t have enough time and would like to accommodate for the whole family without completing the whole trek.

A ride through history. A heritage rail line with with a darling ❤️ chugging her way through tunnels and mountain passes. Very pretty.

Pour la terrasse et le bar snack bon accueil et bon sourire. Pour la boutique souvenir en revanche à déplorer. Nos chiens ont l’habitude d’attirer un peu de monde car ils sont choux comme tout. J’attendais ma femme qui faisait un tour dans la boutique et un petit groupe s’est rapproché pour câliner mes toutous. La vendeuse antipathique est sorti et m’a demandé de partir car le « fan club » comme elle disait gênait l’entrée de sa boutique si cher et sans intérêt.

Cette terrasse est assez grande et se situe à l'arrivée du train de Montenvers. Elle permet d'avoir une vue sur la mer de glace. Bien aimé car il y a des restaurants et une boutique de souvenirs sur cette terrasse

Pessima esperienza da non ripetere. Accoglienza estremamente scortese. Ci sediamo ad aspettare che si liberi un tavolo, quando si libera ci dice di aspettare per pulirlo ma poi lo da ad una coppia di francesi. Pessimo comportamento irrispettoso. Vivamente sconsigliato.

C'est une super activité à faire. Une monté en pente vertigineuse dans la nature. Prise de consciences amplifié sur le réchauffement climatique car plus matérialisé par la fonte de la mer de glace.

Wir haben Gottseidank ein Tagesticket gebucht und nicht nur eine Zugfahrt. Wir sind um Ort Gewandert do der Gletscher mal gewesen ist. Dort hat man nicht wirklich eine schöne Aussicht, eher eine erschreckende. Die Zugfahrt ist absolut unspektakulär.
Unser Fazit: erspart euch diesen traurigen Anblick und fahrt lieber auf den Berg mit der Seilbahn.
