La historia de la seda a traves de la visita al museo de Lyon. Es muy interesante la musealizacion que se ha hecho de este espacio. y La tienda es preciosa. Lo recomiendo para visitar y conocer cerca la historia de la seda y una excusa estupenda para subir a las colinas de Lyon... llenas de encanto

Interesting 3-part historical tour of weaving & silk industry. Very reasonable. Friendly & helpful staff. They had laminated English guide so I could understand self-guided portion.

Nous avons participé à la visite guidée.
Visite très intéressante, nous y avons appris pleins de choses sur les canuts.
Il est très intéressant et impressionnant de voir comment marche une machine à tisser.
Très beau savoir faire !

La visite guidée se fait en deux parties et débute dans un atelier situé en face du musée pour découvrir la vie des canuts. Deux métiers à tisser sont exposés dont le métier Jacquard avec l'utilisation de grandes cartes perforées. La deuxième partie se poursuit dans une salle du musée avec des commentaires sur l'origine et la production du fil de soie. Vous terminez par une visite libre du musée et de la boutique. N'oubliez pas de réserver sur le site de la "Maison des Canuts", les places sont limitées.

We really enjoyed learning more about the silk industry and how things were done historically.
We enjoyed the demonstration and appreciated that he talked in both French and English.
It’s a unique museum and definitely worth a visit

A small museum but interesting to see how silk was made in the 18 & 19 century by the 'canuts' especially with living in a similar place in UK where lace was produced. The process was similar. Lovely to see the old looms and learn about Jacquard. The signage was all in French but a handbook was provided in English. Tie the visit in with a walk round the Croix Rousse area - it has great shops/cafes.

Pour voir un vrai métier à tisser de canut, même sans rentrer...

Même sans rentrer dans la maison des Canuts, de l'extérieur, dans la rue, on peut apercevoir un métier à tisser Jacquard dans une vitrine et en face un appartement miniature d'un canut. Toujours intéressant en passant dans ce quartier si sympathique qu'est la Croix Rousse.
Observez également dans ce quartier les immeubles typiques des canuts avec les grandes hauteurs sous plafond et fenêtres. Par endroits, dans la Croix Rousse, des maisons plus basses sauvegardées entre deux immeubles que les lyonnais appellent les "dents creuses" : un patrimoine à sauvegarder !

Having been to wineries before, we opted for a change and went to Maison des Canuts. Instead of taking a one hour bus ride to a Beaujelais winery, it was a short ride to the top of “Working Hill” in Lyon for an instructive and illuminating hour-plus experience with a delightful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic young woman from Brazil. She was wonderful! I had read some about silk manufacture and weaving, and we had traveled to China and toured a silk “museum” and manufacturing outlet, so knew about the growth and nurturing of silk “worms” (caterpillars) and the harvesting of silk from the cocoons. But as much as I had read or heard about weaving I never truly understood how weaving with punchcards worked…until visiting Lyon. Our docent at Maison des Canuts spoke French, Italian, English, and of course Portuguese and Spanish. Just as impressive, she was fluent in the language, function, use, and history of weaving and thus imparted her knowledge verbally and by example at the loom itself. She answered questions and demonstrated how to correct errors or accidents and how to fix broken threads. Seems detailed, and it was. But by her clear explanation and demonstrations, all was crystal clear, including the function of the punch cards…. a forerunner of the computer. Also of great interest was the history and details of the lives of the workers and their families. All in all, 5 stars, fun and enjoyable and illuminating.
