C’est un peu ce qu’il y a de plus beau dans la vielle ville avec la cathédrale. Une fois la porte franchie, c’est plus disparate.

Older of the two remaining Freiburg city gates, dating back to 1202, but rebuilt several times over the years. The current Martinstor appearance is tarnished with a McDonald’s sign (although thankfully no golden arches). Surprising that local officials have allowed this.

Si tratta di una delle due antiche porte della città che sono arrivate fino a noi, anzi la più antica risalendo al 1202. Da notare, sul lato interno, la lastra commemorativa della caccia alle streghe del 1599. Sull’edificio a fianco una “discreta” insegna di un fast food: pare che il locale sia stato acquisito con l’elargizione di qualche “incentivo”, non potendo più tornare indietro la popolazione ottenne che almeno l’insegna non fosse troppo appariscente.

One of the gatesBeautifully renovated, but less beautiful than Schwabentor, in my opinion. More centrally located. of the old town.

In the late 18th century certain interests deemed this grand tower an obstacle to evolving transport routes and wanted to demolish it. Fortunately they were persuaded otherwise by a wise Mayor and it continues to be gloriously extant,
A busy tram line now runs through the central opening that was widened by the above mentioned Mayor, as part of his campaign for its preservation.
One of five defensive towers in the city wall, it played a key role in warding off attackers.
Gorgeous dark and light stonework is admirable. On one side a plaque with a double-headed eagle is enshrined. On the reverse an ornate rectangle has elaborate script.
Clocks with golden hands and hours are towards the top on two faces.

Reste des fortifications de l'époque médiévale, Martinstor se melange parfaitement à l'architecture actuelle de la vieille ville.
Comme son homologue Schwabentor, cette porte-tour est incontournable quand on visite la vieille ville.

Diciamo che uno degli edifici più antichi della città e fotografati e non si può perdere. Anche il quartiere circostante regala degli scorci molto caratteristici. L'edificio a fianco ospita un punto vendita McDonald's, E' vero che la famosa catena di fast food ha dovuto piegarsi affinché la sua insegna non stonasse e quindi i colori non sono quelli classici (giallo e rosso acceso), tuttavia....
