This is a charming 35-metre long bridge that crosses Pöllat gorge near Neuschwanstein Castle. From the bridge, visitors have a clear, remarkable viewing of the castle from an elevated position. The close is located around 15 minute walk from castle along a clearly marked pathway, making it very much worth spending the extra time in experience as part of castle visits.
Historically, King Maximilian II had a wooden footbridge constructed here in 1845. The original bridge was replaced with a filigree iron structure in 1866. It has been restored a handful of times over the year including in 1984, 2015 and 2021. The more regular upkeep in recent years likely has quite a bit to do with the heavy usage by tourists that stop by in great numbers these day as part of their Neuschwanstein Castle experience.
During our visit there was a very long queue of people waiting to enter the bridge, which was completely very crowded, mostly shoulder to shoulder with tourists upon much of the bridge.
Note: Many people stop walking and begin taking pictures shortly after accessing Marienbrucke when Neuschwanstein begins to come into view. Do yourself a favour and keep walking. The further you go onto the bridge, the better the vantage and view and the fewer people you have compete with for space. Near the end of the bridge, there were just a few people when we visited recently. Views were great from this location as well.

Prachtig uitzicht op het kasteel. Wij zijn buiten het hoofdseizoen gegaan en het was er enorm druk. De brug stond vol! Het was dan ook lachen ok al die mensen te zien staan op de brug. Als je de brug door loopt kom je op het einde op een wandelpad terecht in het bos. Als je deze volgt naar boven kom je op een ander en hoger punt uit waar je in alle rust kan genieten van het uitzicht. Het was er heerlijk rustig. Helaas niet toegankelijk voor mensen in een rolstoel of die slecht te been zijn. Er liggen namelijk veel uitstekende wortels, maar dat heb je natuurlijk in een bos. Het was er prachtig!

Everyone says it, and that does not make it any less true - if you go to Neuschwanstein, then don’t miss the view from this bridge. Going here was the highlight of our visit to the castles - it was breathtaking, if not for the faint hearted.
You don’t need a ticket to visit the bridge - or anywhere else on the mountain except for the inside of the castle itself for that matter - and if you have a head for heights, there is no reason not to.
It is located about 15 minutes from the castle itself, mainly uphill and with no way to get there but walking (though if you take the bus from the bottom of the mountain you are dropped off just a couple of minutes from the bridge). There is a queuing system so only a certain number of people are on the bridge at any one time - and it does get packed nonetheless - but the wait should never be too long.
It’s all worth it. The view down the gorge to the castle is one of the most spectacular I have ever come across. Pictures do not do it full justice - you could stand there forever drinking it all in. The nature of the crowds mean that isn’t possible, but make sure you follow them here.

Puente que pasa por encima (a mucha altura) del río Pöllat. Coincidimos todos en que es el mejor punto para fotografiar el Castillo de Neuschwenstein; recomiendo ir a primera hora o ya después de las cinco de la tarde, cuando ya no hay nadie, porque si no se junta muchísima gente.

De Marienbrucke zelf stelt natuurlijk niets voor het gaat om het uitzicht vanaf deze brug.
Dit is dé locatie om Neuschwanstein goed te kunnen zien en prachtige foto's te maken. De brug is gratis te bezoeken en het uitzicht adembenemend.

Las mejores vistas completas del castillo, la obtienes desde este puente. Esta señalizada la entrada para que puedas llegar caminando. no se accede de otra manera. El entorno es hermoso y las vistas tanto del río como del castillo del otro lado son increíbles.

Never ever miss to visit this bridge whenever going for Neuschwanstein castle tour
You get the full view of the castle & its surrounding - hills & waterfalls if you look down
It just a 10-15 minutes hike from the castle entrance & bus from Schwangau village stops almost exactly at its entry

Die Brücke liegt ca 2 Minuten von der Bushaltestelle Neuschwanstein etwas bergauf entfernt. Bei uns gabs keine Beschränkung - auf der Brücke wars deshalb sehr voll.
Einige Bretter geben etwas nach - aber die Aussicht auf das Schloss ist traumhaft. Direkt unterhalb der Wasserfall.

We intend to visit Marienbrucke late afternoon in August when we are on our way driving from Oberammergau to Fussen. Can anyone advise the closest possible parking to the bridge? Also, can anyone advise whether late afternoon will be a good time to take a nice photo (as regards the position of the sun) of Neuschwanstein Castle?

There is a parking spot called Mariënbrucke at about 100m away from the bridge. When visiting the castle you can walk to the bridge in about 10 minutes, but it will be crowded in the afternoon. Light is at iymt's best, but withe the correct filter you can also take a good shot as from early morning. In fact, I was there this morning at 6:30 to escape the crowds (in the afternoon you sometimes need to queu for over 1hr, due to covid-restrictions)
